To think this is NOT how you clean up dog piss?

New dog, still getting the hand of toilet training and she has a small accident once every few days.

DH's turn to clean it up today, and I discovered that his preferred method is to fill a bowl with soapy water, mop up the piss, wring the pissy cloth into the clean water, then swab the murky piss-water around the floor.

DH thinks I'm being overly precious, and failing to appreciate his dog-piss-cleaning prowess. AIBU?

I got a poet from Wilkinson's
Wow! Wilkos HAVE broadened their range! Grin

UpstartCrow · 30/03/2018 15:37

Yanbu, but dont use disinfectant such as zoflora, its harmful to pets. Some scents tell the puppy to come back to that spot and are best avoided.
Use a solution of bicarbonate of soda or a product from the pet shop.

Will head to Pets at Home tomorrow, thanks all.

DH has been dispatched on dog walk with strict instructions regarding 'Be quick' command. M

Have secretly cleaned pissy area a third time while he was out Grin

DontFuckingSayIt · 30/03/2018 17:47

I'd probably mop it and think no more about it... but that's surely pretty much the same thing! Feel scruffy now Grin

Momo18 · 30/03/2018 17:53

Honestly, it's easier to buy a pack of cheap size one 99p Aldi nappies and soak it up with that, then mop with kitchen roll and disinfect to dispose of. Some may say it's wasteful to use a nappy, but it works out cheaper then washing mops in the machine!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 17:54

Dont if you're my DH, then you're meant to be keeping an eye on the dog right now Grin

I would be livid just chuck him a pack of dettol wipes and tell him to grow up

PennyPIckle · 30/03/2018 17:56

I’m impressed your DH had a go at cleaning up dogs pee tbh. That job always falls to me...🙄 So glad my puppy “got it” quickly 🐶

OohMavis · 30/03/2018 17:57

Soak up with paper towel, clean with disinfectant and more paper towel.

Topseyt · 30/03/2018 18:53

I used to soak up with kitchen roll until the area was dry, then wipe with a strong solution of biological washing detergent, then mop with a solution of washing up liquid.

That seemed to work for us when our dogs were puppies.

Your DH is simply spreading the piss, so spreading the scent of it over a wider and wider area for your dog. That will confuse things and make indoor toileting more likely. Your dog will pick up on the scent, even though to us it might be undetectable. Their noses are massively more sensitive than ours.

Knittedfairies · 30/03/2018 19:06

I want a poet from Wilko too..

speakout · 30/03/2018 19:11

As much as I love dogs this thread reminds me why I choose not to have one.

speakout · 30/03/2018 19:13

Also- depends on the floor.

Are we talking shag pile carpet, wooden floor or tiles>

Surely the method will vary.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 19:14

speakout if you could see her now, all snuggled in a blanket and not pissing everywhere, you'd change your mind.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 19:15

PS wooden floor.

i work in a nursery and thats how my boss/manger cleans up wee accidents .i use kitchen roll then mop

scrivette · 30/03/2018 19:27

I don't always shower every single day Blushbut I clean up the dogs accidents your way too Grin

speakout · 30/03/2018 19:36

JesusInTheCabbageVan I totally get it .

Over the years I have owned 4 dogs. Amazing fantastic creatures, loving intuitive, part of the family.

But also messy and smelly and a great deal of work. Lovely when they are snuggling or bounding along the beach with you.

Not so lovely when they have the squits and you don't realise until you stand on it in bare feet on the kitchen floor.

timeforabrewnow · 30/03/2018 19:50

Your DH is doing fine. We have a very elderly and incontinent dog and would get through a ridiculous amount of paper towels with the dumb methods suggested.

J-cloth with hot water and detergent sounds fine (and a designated bowl for messes). All the precious people on here need to get a life.

Plus OP cleaning it 3 times is OTT and just silly.

timeforabrewnow · 30/03/2018 19:51

ps and no, our house or floor don't stink!!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 20:37

OK, now I'm pissed off, please talk me down.

DH nipped out to get fish and chips, and I was reading DS his bedtime story. She was in the room and being an absolute pain - trying to destroy everything pulling stuff out of the bin, wouldn't settle even when I tried to give her fuss. Really out of character for her. I finished as fast as I could so I could take her outside, but she pissed right in front of me in the entrance to our bedroom (where she's not allowed usually). I admit I lost it and shouted, but she looked like she didn't give a fuck. The other times I could chalk down to confusion or genuine need, but this honestly felt like spite. I know it's not, but I don't know what her problem is. She'd had a long walk less than 2 hours before and a lovely calm cuddle on the sofa. I love her, but could also kill her right now. Not literally, obviously. FFS.

EeeSheWasThin · 30/03/2018 21:11

Jesus please don’t shout at her, she’s probably really confused and if she was making a fuss she was probably desperate. I know it’s frustrating - Eeedog was incontinent before he died so I do understand - but she won’t associate the shouting with the weeing.

And yes, you need the pet urine stuff.

Hope she settles soon Flowers for both of you.

shouldnthavesaid · 30/03/2018 21:25

No advice Jesus but having very similar issues with 9 month old JRT rescue. She will wee outdoors but will wee and poo indoors too, more so if nervous (very anxious). Currently on hourly tries .. and a 5am run overnight (otherwise bed stays dry somehow thankfully).

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 30/03/2018 21:26

I know, I feel bad already. Just.... Why? Why can she hold it all night and then not last 90 mins? I honestly think this was something other than being desperate, as her behaviour was so odd beforehand. I want to know why., more than anything. We're going to keep adapting to avoid situations like this, and just hope it gets better.

Vanish pet foam is pretty good too.
