AIBU to think that MN are letting us down?

I have really enjoyed MN in the past, both for advice and sometimes for a laugh or a debate. I don't use other social media and feel I can express myself more freely amongst mostly other women and within the relative anonymity that a username provides. However in recent months i have seen thread after thread appear in the Daily Fail and now The Mirror and a live conversation on ITV's Loose Women!! Some of the subject matter is sensitive and could give OPs away. I know it's a public forum but sharing on here is not the same as publishing in a newspaper or an interview on TV . AIBU to expect a forum like MN, that used to feel pro women, to do more about this?

judging by the posts they make. Is it not right to try to challenge the status quo?

People are not going to stop using material from public forums. What needs to change is people's awareness. If you're posting on the internet you really need to get up to speed on the basics, especially if you have children.

outabout · 29/03/2018 17:27

Anything typed on a computer and sent via internet, be it email or stuff on a forum can be read by anyone, anywhere in the world, FOREVER.
Printed newspapers are tomorrows chip paper.

myrtleWilson · 29/03/2018 17:30

But MsHarry - we have no way of knowing how much of MN is fiction anyway - yes exposed trolls but we're not attached to lie detectors as we type are we?

gamerchick · 29/03/2018 17:35

There is nowt stopping you warning people on their threads OP.

This has been happening for years. Penis beaker broke mumsnet after it was lifted. Still people come and post.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:39

But are MN doing enough. They have effectively said they can't really bothered to challenge the DM!

OP posts:
Graphista · 29/03/2018 17:40

But it's not affected mn's success has it? Quite the opposite in fact.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:41

Hmmm, makes me think MN is not the campaigner that I though they were. Have they sold out?

Since some topics can be a bit personal it might be an idea if MNHQ added a line at the top of the main pages reminding users that it iIS 'broadcast' to the whole planet so if you don't want the mole on your thigh publicised be careful what you actually say.
With evermore improving 'search' algorithms identifying individuals is getting easier.

Graphista · 29/03/2018 17:44

No they haven't said they "can't be bothered" they have said they understand how the law around their product works including copyright laws. Which you clearly don't. Now you're not running a forum so arguably don't need to know - but to claim you know better than those that do (and I'm sure mn has copyright lawyers either on staff or who they consult) is ridiculous.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:45

That's more like it outabout, solutions not complacency. Star

Graphista · 29/03/2018 17:45

Where have they claimed to be a campaigner? Or a charity? Or a support group? That seems an assumption on your part that they have portrayed themselves as one or all of these things.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:45

As many posters have pointed out, unfortunately there’s not a huge amount we can do about it - the DM would likely claim Fair Use and that would be difficult to challenge. They would say they're just 'reporting' what was said on the thread.

Cop out.

MsHarry I’m just going to put it out there. I can’t bloody stand ‘thought provoking’ ‘questions’ on a discussion thread... you aren’t holding court.

Tell us what you think. Do you think they have sold out? Why do you think that? What are you basing your opinion on?

Graphista · 29/03/2018 17:47

Not a cop out - the law - seriously if you're going to try and argue this point go and learn about copyright properly - hell even my library has a poster that contains info about fair use.

Lethaldrizzle · 29/03/2018 17:47

Didn't know mumsnet was a campaign site?! Hmm

troodiedoo · 29/03/2018 17:48

If something is free to use, then assume you are the product.

NotTakenUsername · 29/03/2018 17:48

They run campaigns. That is not the sole purpose of the site though. Confused

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:50

Mumsnet has lobbied actively on the aspects of the bill dealing with online publication, contributing written and oral evidence to Parliament to explain the particular difficulties faced by sites carrying user-generated content, and the importance and value of user anonymity in the face of a determined anti-anonymity drive by some Parliamentarians
This is on their campaign page.

Did... did you just give outabout a gold star!? Shock

outabout · 29/03/2018 17:54

The concept of total privacy went out the window decades ago.
If you want to tell a message to a friend without ANYONE knowing about it you would have to go to extreme measures to prevent it.
Something on the lines of digging a hole in the garden, roofed with thick concrete so that your speech cannot be overheard.
Many of the techniques for 'bugging' shown on James Bond or similar are real (if someone really wants to know what you are saying).
MN is not to ''blame' and there is no way it could prevent your sequence of key presses being available to everyone.
If you don't want it publicised, don't say it!

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:54

Yes.
