AIBU to think that MN are letting us down?

I have really enjoyed MN in the past, both for advice and sometimes for a laugh or a debate. I don't use other social media and feel I can express myself more freely amongst mostly other women and within the relative anonymity that a username provides. However in recent months i have seen thread after thread appear in the Daily Fail and now The Mirror and a live conversation on ITV's Loose Women!! Some of the subject matter is sensitive and could give OPs away. I know it's a public forum but sharing on here is not the same as publishing in a newspaper or an interview on TV . AIBU to expect a forum like MN, that used to feel pro women, to do more about this?

thanksjane but to file suit for use of 'copyrighted' content created by a MN user, wouldn't that have to be done in an open court? Meaning (hypothetical) if Ms XX wrote a post that she is having an affair and wants to leave her spouse and the DF picks it up, MsXX's affair would then become even more 'public' knowledge' because she'd have to state it in court papers that were filed under her own name? Or at least wouldn't it have to have enough identifiable content to prove it was her?

Could we each put a copyright disclaimer on every post? Would that stop the pilfering, at least of our own material? And would the disclaimer have to be under our real names?

It's not difficult to understand why MNHQ are happy for threads to be picked up by the media, it's free advertising for them and they gain new members.

Nothing on the internet is secure and it's best to understand that before posting anything anywhere.

Cupoteap · 29/03/2018 15:49

Not responded to you, how have you contacted them?

SunnyCoco · 29/03/2018 15:52

Wow

Basic understanding of what the internet is and how it works ...

No wonder companies in recent years found it so easy to target ‘certain types of people’ and brain wash them ...

Graphista · 29/03/2018 15:54

Another shock for op - mn is largely unmoderated as in they don't watch all threads all the time (how could they?) and makes that clear - that's why there's report buttons and a "site stuff" section

givemesteel · 29/03/2018 15:54

I agree it is frustrating, and even if I had a 'tabloid worthy' problem I wouldn't post it on here.

I think that Mumsnet could become a victim of its own success. I think we all get that it isn't a private forum but when people post their problems I think there's a reasonable expectation that the won't be jeered at by a bunch of daily mail readers.

It's also a question of readership. I can be very confident my luddite mil doesn't read Mumsnet do I might post a potentially outing post about her here. But she does read the daily mail so she would be likely to then read it there. So might someone's abusive husband or boss.

If there was another, smaller parents forum, with less high exposure, maybe like Mumsnet 6 or 7 years ago I'd probably switch to that. I quite like the motherload but because it uses your Facebook profile I'd never post on it about personal stuff like I do here. So anonymity is important for a lot of subjects.

CheeseRollingChampion · 29/03/2018 16:01

They can't act. It's a public forum. It always has been. Public forum content is allowed to be referenced in the press. MN threads have been lifted for years by the press. See also reddit posts.

When you sign up to the forum you sign the t&cs that state it. If you don't read them or understand what public forum means that's not mumsnets fault.

Change a few details or leave out and thing identifying. Expect anything you write to be
Lifted but mostly it's stuff which they deem controversial or dramatic.

Read any DM article, it is basically pieced together using what people tweeted about it. This is just lazy journalists trying to find a story

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 29/03/2018 16:31

Hi everyone.
Here's what we've posted before whenever this subject comes up (as it does fairly frequently).

"We're happy to explain how things stand with regards to other sources lifting threads from MN.

As many posters have pointed out, unfortunately there’s not a huge amount we can do about it - the DM would likely claim Fair Use and that would be difficult to challenge. They would say they're just 'reporting' what was said on the thread.

Being an open site does bring many advantages, but this kind of thing is a consequence of that, we're afraid. We always like to remind our users that this is a public forum, searchable by Google, legally linkable to - and quotable by - all and sundry."

CotswoldStrife · 29/03/2018 16:46

So MN didn't say it was OK to use the article and wasn't contacted by any of the outlets that have used it on this occasion, @YetAnotherHelenMumsnet ?

What about this bit then MNHQ?

The DM are not just reporting, they are screen grabbing!

OP posts:
MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:03

Bit of a cop out really MNHQ. DM would likely claim Fair Use and that would be difficult to challenge oh so don't bother then. Not what I would expect from MN who like to be seen to challenge and take a stand on many issues. Poor show!

OP posts:
gamerchick · 29/03/2018 17:08

Nobody is forcing you to post on here though!

Honestly, I know it’s irritating but these threads have been posted a thousand times. It all boils down to (again) be careful what you post.

I don’t post threads because I can’t be arsed to name change if stuff was lifted by the press. It’s not a hard thing to grasp.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:12

It's not about me( as i've said many times) I just don't think it's right and the conversation needs to be had.

OP posts:
MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:12

Remember that your responses could be lifted gamer!

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 29/03/2018 17:13

The conversation has been had. Hundreds of times. Just search 'daily mail' on the talk boards and you'll see them all.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:17

So have most of the threads on here to be fair. Doesn't mean the Issue has gone away and I for one don't think MN's argument is robust. Would you like to see this practice stopped?

OP posts:
NotTakenUsername · 29/03/2018 17:19

Would you like to see this practice stopped?

Couldn’t give two hoots to be fair. Don’t share publicly what you don’t want to be made public...

MissMary0fSweden · 29/03/2018 17:20

Why would MN want to prevent this happening though?

gamerchick · 29/03/2018 17:22

I have had comments lifted when being on a thread that has appeared somewhere. I didn’t care OP. I accept the risk or I would find somewhere else to post.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:23

Gosh all these savvy people on this thread. If only I could be as wise. I bet they've never put a foot wrong on t'internet. Just remember oh wise ones that very many people on MN do not possess your technical awareness, judging by the posts they make. Is it not right to try to challenge the status quo?

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 29/03/2018 17:23

Would you like to see this practice stopped?

Doesn't bother me. I don't read the online newspapers and I don't post anything on here that would worry me if duplicated.

MsHarry · 29/03/2018 17:25

Why would MN want to prevent this happening though?

Because eventually it may mean loss if users. It may meant that the thread content becomes pure fiction and so loses hits. Because MN likes to be seen as a campaigner for what is morally right, for what makes it's users' lives easier.

OP posts:
NotTakenUsername · 29/03/2018 17:25

Then they shouldn’t play with things they don’t understand...
