Normal child behaviour or not?

Is it normal for a 6 year old to tell you they hate you? My child's behaviour has become really challenging recently and he pretty much tells me daily (at some point) he hates me. Is this normal?

My older three haven't said it, but my youngest...oh he has some intense feelings sometimes and everyone needs to know when they've crossed him. We're working on it, just like other mean behaviour.

Mine do this too and usually I repeat back what they say to me and it takes the wind out of the sails a bit. When ds rants and I say 'I know you hate me so what can I do to change that' he'll usually start ranting & then will suggest ways to help him. Then half way through he'll realise I've distracted him from his tantrum and will feel conned! GrinSmile

No but you can control your response and I find it shocking so may just shrug their shoulders and say ‘it’s normal ‘ for us it wasn’t at all.

It depends on your boundaries. I know one lovely lovely friend whose son used to say this and kick her at 9. She used to brush it off as normal. He’s now 16 and an absolute nightmare but it’s her soft parenting I think.

The post about only spoilt children not saying I hate you because they always get their own way Is bizarre and sad. What an awful battleground.

We behaved as parents with respect love and tolerance and in turn we expected the same back. You can set the bar higher than ‘I hate you’ being ok. Make it not ok snd they will stop just like any other negative behaviour
