(Lighthearted) to think if we have another unbearable summer like last year

I should be able to demand baby be brought on early. Fwiw I'm due 7th September and live in the south east where it hit full on melting temperatures last year for long periods of time. I hate the heat. I am dreading this summer and being a beached whale.

I've told DH of my cunning strategy to insist on an early baby if I can't cope he's not impressed and says he'll just invest in a whale sized paddling pool for the garden for me.

Who is bu here? (Clearly I am but seriously I'm already stressed about the summer and need coping strategies!)

I live in the southeast and don't remember it being especially hot last Summer? I think we got about one really hot week in August?

Mind you my memory is shot to shit lately, so You're probably not BU.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 23/03/2018 20:41

SouthEast here too, there really wasn't a hot summer last year. Easter was nice and warm, but we didn't get any really hot days? It doesn't mean we won't get any heat this summer, if this bloody winter finally comes to a end.

Paddling pool is a good idea, even a bucket with cold -ish water will cool you down. Don't plan to do anything physical, just relax and enjoy the sunshine if we have any.

I found it so much easier to be pregnant in extreme temperatures than having a new born! You don't have to worry about them freezing or over-heating.

Trytowin · 23/03/2018 20:42

Buy a standing fan. Life saver, cool shower and then bask in the fan :-) (my daughter was born on the 17th September so I had last year's evil heat waves) I slept with it on also.

Tip don't go straight for cold shower as your body will heat quickly trying to compensate but go for tepid then get cooler and cooler. Heaven

I live in the south east and was heavily pregnant a few summers ago. All I could do was sit in my pants with my feet in ice buckets surrounded by full blast fans. I was still too hot. Good luck!

Namechangedtoscream · 23/03/2018 20:43

I must have imagined the 30c+ temperatures last year then...

I completely expected that this would be a post complaining that we might have another wet, cool, miserable summer. I love the sun and heat so am normally praying for a hot summer. I am due to give birth in July, though, so this year I guess I definitely want warm not hot - but I'm still hoping for blue skies not grey!

Namechangedtoscream · 23/03/2018 20:44

Thanks trytowin I'll try and remember those!

Move to Scotland. We did have summer, last year - I missed it, I was in the bathroom.

More risk of hypothermia and trench foot, than heatstroke and sunburn up here.

Namechangedtoscream · 23/03/2018 20:46

stdg I keep trying to sell this idea to DH but he likes warmth. I have threatened divorce.

I remember flying to Morocco at the end of September to catch up on the heat we never got.

I tell you why I remember the lack of really hot days last year, because there's some DIY we do yearly when it's really hot and we have a solid week of forecast sun. We couldn't do it last year because the weather was never that nice.

I don't think my kids used their paddling pools that much last year, and I used the MN tip or covering it with black bags to heat up the water.

TooMuchGreys · 23/03/2018 20:47

Portable aircon unit thing if it gets really bad? I’m in the USA and due September too. Summer starts in May, non stop heat for months and we get quite a few 40C+ days. Just brilliant 🙄

Namechangedtoscream · 23/03/2018 20:48

Do I just live in a bizarre microclimate then?

AdalindSchade · 23/03/2018 20:48

We definitely had some REALLY hot days in the south east but most of the summer was a wet disappointment. I had my DC in September, it's really not that bad.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 23/03/2018 20:49

if you can't have shutters, you need to invest in decent curtains too, they make a massive difference to room temperatures when it's really hot. Open windows all night and early morning, close curtains as soon as sun start shining.

elizzza · 23/03/2018 20:49

I don’t know what the people above are talking about, I remember heatwaves from last summer and I’m sure I remember reading that we’d had some of the hottest days/weeks since the 1970s. I was on maternity leave and I thought longingly of my air conditioned office more than once last summer...

I feel for you OP! Embrace the paddling pool!

renegadebehaviour · 23/03/2018 20:49

I was very pregnant in the boiling hot summer of 2003 - spent much of it in a cold bath reading books and drinking lovely icy drinks. Bloody hated being on the tube though!

Lelly0503 · 23/03/2018 20:49

I was you last year and actually had my baby on the 7th sept. It was unbearable at times. Invest in a fan. I did the whole paddling pool etc. And maxi dresses for when you have a big bump and just cba with putting clothes on. You can get this harem style jumpsuits from Amazon they are so ugly but so cool and comfy.

Obviouspretzel · 23/03/2018 20:49

It was red hot last summer! Wasn't it big news in the media?

Kittysparks1 · 23/03/2018 20:49

Had baby August last year. Spent the last two weeks of my pregnancy in my pants in front of a fan with the blinds shut. I couldn't go outside.
I was drenched in sweat the whole stay in hospital, it was hotter than hell.
As soon as I left hospital the weather had changed and it was pissing down.

MummyItsallaboutyou · 23/03/2018 20:49

We had a really hot June last year iirc. I remember a couple of sweltering days at work. The summer hols were pretty mediocre.

Namechangedtoscream · 23/03/2018 20:49

Google tells me I'm not going mad and in June and July we had lots of mid 30s days but also a lot of the summer was very wet. Seems we are all right.

Ginger1982 · 23/03/2018 20:50

Yeah YABU. I live in Scotland and we had a shit summer as per usual! 😂

MollyCule · 23/03/2018 20:51

The worst of it was in June. I remember because my 1 year old had chicken pox that week. It was absolutely awful. I very nearly booked a room in a local airconditoned hotel. I was on mat leave and very jealous of DH swanning off to an airconditioned office for the day!

I ended up driving dd around so that she could sleep in the airconditioned car (she barely slept at night, it was 30 degrees in our bedrooms). Cool baths and putting a big bowl of ice in front of the fan helped slightly!

LittleRen · 23/03/2018 20:51

I had my first born in the middle of a long heatwave back in 2013, I was also very pregnant during the heat - it was fine, it really wasn’t that bad at all... I didn’t find it any harder to cope with than when I wasn’t pregnant. Last year we spent a week in New York in August where it was 35+ degrees but felt so much hotter as it’s as built up city, again I was quite pregnant and found it fine even walking miles around the city. You will manage.... just take care of yourself.

RoryHatesCoffee · 23/03/2018 20:51

I was in a similar situation to you last year and baby did turn up quite early which was a shocker... turns out the breastfeeding sweats and holding a newborn all the time are just as gross in a heatwave as being heavily pregnant.
