(Lighthearted) to think if we have another unbearable summer like last year

I should be able to demand baby be brought on early. Fwiw I'm due 7th September and live in the south east where it hit full on melting temperatures last year for long periods of time. I hate the heat. I am dreading this summer and being a beached whale.

I've told DH of my cunning strategy to insist on an early baby if I can't cope he's not impressed and says he'll just invest in a whale sized paddling pool for the garden for me.

Who is bu here? (Clearly I am but seriously I'm already stressed about the summer and need coping strategies!)

There were three weeks of heat in June, when the kids were stuck in stuffy classrooms, and the rest was shit.

If we get a summer like that this year after this endless bloody winter then I'm emigrating, or at the very least going somewhere hot next winter.

FrozenMargarita17 · 23/03/2018 22:03

I had my baby in July and the last few weeks of being pregnant were AWFUL. I was sooooooo hot and massive!! Dh got an AC unit and I sat in front of it in my pants Grin

BollySBK · 23/03/2018 22:05

Was pregnant in the summer of 2004, had spd and looked like a beached whale's fatter aunt. I had 'nankles' (pregnant from the neck down) let alone cankles. I ended up dressing like Dennis Rousos (sp?!) and took to a Spanish fan like Carmen Miranda. I survived with the help of plenty of drinking water, sitting with my feet in a bucket of tepid water, and wet wipes. DS appeared late bless him. What we go through for men.... Tsk....! Good luck, don't push yourself, and hope for a lovely English summer (rain). Flowers

kimanda · 23/03/2018 22:08

If it was me, I would leave it.

Surely having the baby around 7th Sept would be better for them, because they will be the oldest in the year, and at a massive advantage.

Also, you could opt to have the baby early, and it could be hot from May! So what are you going to do, have the baby halfway through the pregnancy?!

Leave things as they are. Smile

steff13 · 23/03/2018 22:09

I second (or third or fourth) a portable AC. Or a window unit. They're not very expensive. I had two summer babies, and I would have died without AC.

Aroundtheworldandback · 23/03/2018 22:12

Yes it was unbearable last summer, I’m at the other end ie the menopause and fun it wasn’t..

Bluelady · 23/03/2018 22:14

I love heat and the last decent summer we had was 2014. It was bloody wonderful. Last year we had some lovely hot days in June and that was it.

MissT2095 · 23/03/2018 22:21

I gave birth last August!!!

I have 2 suggestions... either move into the freezer section of a supermarket or buy a paddling pool.

I was so undignified by the end of summer but needs must! Enjoy your ankles before they disappear! (Oh and good luck it's so worth it!) Wink

Changerazelea · 23/03/2018 22:22

Had DS on 15 June last year it was 32 degrees in our bedroom at night! Nightmare remember being in daze looking at the thermometer and thinking I must be imagining things. Hideous.

Mumofboys89 · 23/03/2018 22:23

I had ds on the 6th sept last year and I found the heat unbearable. Particularly a few weeks in June and a week or so in August. It was awful and I had a toddler to chase after who constantly wanted to be at the park.

I was never without an iced drink and a can of that cooling mist from the pound shop. Brilliant stuff!

Delatron · 23/03/2018 22:24

I agree wanderings last year was so shit, I couldn't cope with another summer like that. Especially as it coincided with the school holidays.
It's easy to check the temperatures. As many have said we had some hot weeks in June. Mid July onwards was terrible. I have photos on Instagram date stamped to prove it . I remember the endless rain and unseasonable cold. I remember going k holiday in August and being thankful to get away from the bad weather only to get back in mid August and it was still shit. Bank holiday was hot for a few days but then it was crap again.

I wish it was a hot summer but it really wasn't...

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 23/03/2018 22:24

It was definitely really really hot last June/July time. It was my boyfriend's graduation and I remember being so sweaty on the bus that it was literally dripping off me and I couldn't dry it Envy. August wasn't fantastic weather but we definitely had some really hot times in June and July

Delatron · 23/03/2018 22:26

It was crap from mid July onwards. So the school holidays were a big disappointment.

pandarific · 23/03/2018 22:28

eh? It was HORRIFIC. Fucking awful, awful, awful.

I don’t live in fucking SPAIN, anything above 25 needs to fuck the fuck off. YANBU op.

SavageBeauty73 · 23/03/2018 22:28

I thought we had one day of summer. Seriously.

Delatron · 23/03/2018 22:35

Just checked and last year was the coldest summer for 35 years.
You can't really argue with facts however much you hate summer!
Now 2006 was a great summer, as was 2003...

YellowFlower201 · 23/03/2018 22:37

Can't remember it being very hot last year. Mine was born in September after a heat wave. Cold flannels on the bump, fan, keep shutters/curtains closed and drink lots. You'll be fine.
I'm unsure how youy're going to insist on an early baby?

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 23/03/2018 22:41

Had DS on 15 June last year it was 32 degrees in our bedroom at night!

There must be differences due to the way our houses are built (and exposure yes obviously). I don't think the bedrooms here ever remotely reached 30, and I keep an eye on the temperature because of the kids.

kimanda · 23/03/2018 22:43

@delatron

Where is your source for 2017 being the coldest summer for 2017?

All I can find is info on it being one of the warmest ever!

tho it was the 11th wettest of all time......

kimanda · 23/03/2018 22:44

Sorry, I mean the coldest summer for 35 years!!

Delatron · 23/03/2018 22:49

Google 2017 coldest summer for 35 years and there's pages of it. It was wet and apart from June/early July it wasn't warm.
Its quite easy to check back on what the weather was. (Though I don't need to, the pain of trying to entertain my kids through the wet summer holidays is etched on my memory).

Fluffyears · 23/03/2018 22:56

In Scotland it was shit, we haddry weather for a few weeks but only a few really hot days. One of those I had to spend the night in a&e with dp as he was admitted. He’d come home from work unwell and sat outside on a really hot day and on the phone to nhs 24 the call handler asked me how his colour was ‘erm scarlet!’

MissClareRemembers · 23/03/2018 23:05

I was 2 weeks overdue with DC1 in summer 2006. We are in the South East and at the time we had the hottest recorded temperatures since 1976. It was hideous.

Conversely, I then had DC2 in early 2010 during one of the coldest, snowiest winters on record!

MissClareRemembers · 23/03/2018 23:08

I remember last summer in SE England as being pretty decent! June and early July were really hot and there were definitely loads of warm days in August too.

Delatron · 23/03/2018 23:21

Met office summary 'summer 2017 was rather wet with above average rainfall for each individual month. August was a cool month generally'.
But nice that people are remembering differently and everyone's definition of a 'good' summer is different. Yes if you like cool, wet with the odd warm day it was nice. Endless sunshine and heat it was not.
School holidays were rubbish though.
