(Lighthearted) to think if we have another unbearable summer like last year

I should be able to demand baby be brought on early. Fwiw I'm due 7th September and live in the south east where it hit full on melting temperatures last year for long periods of time. I hate the heat. I am dreading this summer and being a beached whale.

I've told DH of my cunning strategy to insist on an early baby if I can't cope he's not impressed and says he'll just invest in a whale sized paddling pool for the garden for me.

Who is bu here? (Clearly I am but seriously I'm already stressed about the summer and need coping strategies!)

I'd say keep it in!

I had my dd early at end of June 2 years ago. The first 3 weeksof her life were hell. I was so so worried about her overheating, she was miserable and hot, I was miserable, hormonal and hot. We bought a portable aircon unit for the bedroom so we could get it to a sensible, safe temp for sleeping and ended up just staying in one room for days on end with the aircon running.

I was so so so so worried about her.

As much as you will be uncomfortable, at least your baby should be fairly safe!

Also, September babies are generally better equipped for school!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 23/03/2018 21:12

The way things are going, we'll probably have snow until mid-August, by that time British winter arrives anyway.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 23/03/2018 21:13

You'll save money on not having to buy many maternity clothes? I resented buying a winter pregnancy coat! And your September baby will be one of the oldest in the school year...
So a couple of silver linings there Smile

widgetbeana · 23/03/2018 21:13

P.s. it's so easy for me to say that, but I totally get why it would be hideous. I hate being pregnant at the best of times! Just trying to put a different spin on it to make it more bareable?!

PlumsGalore · 23/03/2018 21:13

Well I bought a massive free standing fan last year and I'm in the north, so we mucpst have had some hot days.

TwitterQueen1 · 23/03/2018 21:14

meh... it's all relative. I had an op on what was apparently the hottest day of the year - July 7th, and needed hot air blowers on me as I was freezing and couldn't stop shivering when I woke up from the GA.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/03/2018 21:15

Lelly they don't make maxi dresses short enough for me. Sad

ParadiseCity · 23/03/2018 21:17

Last year we had some scorchio days in term time then it pissed it down for the 6 weeks hols.

I have been pregnant in summer and it was lovely actually, we did get a paddling pool. I love the heat though.

HesterShaw · 23/03/2018 21:19

Last summer wasn't good OP. In fact it was memorably shit, other than about 10 days in June and August bank holiday.

Are you getting confused? Confused

frayedbuspass · 23/03/2018 21:19

portable air-conditioner, best money you will spend

LucyAutumn · 23/03/2018 21:22

I lived and was pregnant in London last summer, it was very hot and the underground was awful.

I carried everywhere...
•water
•battery powered fan (M&S do good ones)
•wet wipes
•sunhat
•and the BEST thing- a frozen water bottle, pop it in the fridge at work it should still be cool enough to last your journey home.

-Plan your journeys carefully.

I also recommend buying a battery powered fan/ water spray for labour. I bought mine from eBay.

Sandsnake · 23/03/2018 21:26

I think it was hot in the South East last summer, though it massively tailed off pretty much the moment the schools broke up! The earlier part had some really hot days though.

Goodenoughparent101 · 23/03/2018 21:29

It was BOILING in the midlands last summer- I had a tan and hardly went outside at all and hardly ever tan.
Our baby's room monitor was reading 39 degrees at night, it was hard.
The best thing is air conditioning units and the paddling pool under an umbrella.
Local swimming pool too.

Goodenoughparent101 · 23/03/2018 21:29

Oh and going to air-conditioned places like the super market and your car!

SpringNowPlease2018 · 23/03/2018 21:31

Op I'm in London and you are not mad
It was boiling on many days. I was actually looking at air con units on the snowy days to see if I can get a bargain, the flat I live in is insulated to the point of madness and I really struggled last year.

Have you thought about stocking up on things while cheap eg cold gel pillows, those towel things that retain cold, etc.

theeyeofthestormchaser · 23/03/2018 21:31

We had a heatwave when the dc were at school - May or June? It was insanely hot. But the school hols weren’t that warm...

Another one here who was heavily PG in the summer of 2003 which was really hot!!

clippityclock · 23/03/2018 21:31

Summer in the South East was shite last year, really crap and I was off sick from June to September. I felt bloody seen off due to it being so rubbish when I had so much time off.

PNGirl · 23/03/2018 21:32

I have photos from my instagram. June was boiling. My car temp gauge hit 42 degrees C and I went to Thorpe Park in a bikini under my t shirt because it was so sweaty. We painted our front door August Bank Holiday Monday in shorts and flip flops. I appreciate the actual school summer holidays weren't great but I had ro buy a lot of summer work stuff!

Fartootiredtobeawake · 23/03/2018 21:35

I was heavily pregnant, expecting a summer baby in 2014. We had temperatures topping 30. I was told not to go into work as it was so hot! She was born the end of July and we then had more reasonable temperatures.
I didn’t find it too bad, windows opened, lots of fans and looking like a beached whale for the last month!

Delatron · 23/03/2018 21:38

It was hot for a week, maybe two weeks in June last year. From precisely July 13th in the SE it was a very bad summer (I have recorded evidence of this.) The school holidays were dire. I put my heating on in August.
We had a very brief spell of warmth on August bank holiday 27/28th. But that was it. I went on holiday first week of September in the South of England and it pissed it down and we were freezing.

You must be thinking of June.

GrasswillbeGreener · 23/03/2018 21:52

The year my now 12 yr old was born was hot early - so in mid June as he was nearly due we were choosing the shadiest routes locally to go walking. Spotted a for sale sign - it was funny being asked "when are you due" when we went back for a 2nd look and he was already a week overdue. But been pleased we walked that way ever since!

I can't express an opinion about last summer as we spent most of it in Sydney with relatives. Mildly amusing how many times after we got back I had to remind people that we'd been there in midwinter.

Hope you have a reasonable summer, one way or another. My eldest was due late September and patches of the summer were an effort but I don't remember a lot about it, just tried to keep going.

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2018 21:52

What's it going to be like this year? Anyone know? I remember now it was hot in June and then that was pretty much it. 🤔

Amanduh · 23/03/2018 21:58

Yes yanbu 😂 last year some weeks were ridiculously hot and we had nights of hell where none of us or the 6mo could aleep, it was so hot and sticky and horrible! We had a lovely summer mainly bar about a week of bad weather and the couple of weeks that were TOO hot! I think 2017 was something like the 4th hottest summer on record? It was (in the se) over 32 degrees for a week in june and there were nights where we were all up all night and dh slept in the garden! We were just up all night oh it was horrific. July was hot too. Don’t know why people are saying it wasn’t hot in the south east OP - it definitely was!

Firstimefreaked · 23/03/2018 21:58

I gave birth last August, get yourself a cute flannel towel wet it and stick it in the freezer until almost frozen then wrap around your neck, that vans a large brim hat (plus water) kept me lovely and cool it wasn't until I was in the hospital that I had any swelling.

Firstimefreaked · 23/03/2018 22:02

A ice pack in a towel on your bed will cool it in the evening and if you feel hot run your wrists under cold water. Also feel free to ask for a drink wherever you are I had water and a sit in banks doctor offices etc and try not to go out at the hottest times 11am-1pm ish. Hope it goes well and congratulations x (freeze a water bottle for cold water and reassuring baby kicks x)
