Nose piercing.....how old is old enough?

My 14 year old wants her nose pierced. She's at a school which allows one facial piercing in secondary school but I am not sure about this.

She's been asking since she was about 12 and I did have my own done when I was about 17....but it seems faddy and too young.

Any advice? Do I just say no?

I asked my daughter to wait until she was 18 until she got her nose pierced and she was happy with that.

Aragog · 20/03/2018 18:58

Dd has her lobes pierced at 11. I allowed, and signed parental permission, for DD's naval piercing at 13, and her upper ear at 14.5y Neither strictly allowed at school but she knew the rules when she had them done and it was up to her to remove them if need be. Only once in that time has any teacher asked her to remove the ear one. She's having the middle ear done after her GCSEs in June. She'll be 16y so won't need parental permission.

They're all easily removable and when it worn either hidden or not visible unless close up.

I have no piercings other than my lobes. But Dd likes them and she is mature enough to care for them and keep them clean and looked after. Never had any problems to date.

However we have said that we don't like facial piercings and I would prefer her not to have her nose done, as it's way more Vida le and obvious. Fortunately she understands that.

In this day and age I don't think one or two piercings make a difference to people being able to get professional jobs. I know teachers, lawyers, doctors, etc all with piercings.

14 seems ok I think, especially as she has been asking for 2 years. I had mine done when I was 16 and I still have a ring now! I've had it pierced on both sides and one sides healed up and you can't see a scar at all. So even if she gets bored, it should heal fine with nothing to show Smile

jitterbug5 · 20/03/2018 19:06

I'm surprised at people saying they've had to remove them for work places! I work as a senior position in a care home, and worked in accounts in a very strict office and I've never had issues. It just never even occurred to me! And my ring is hardly subtle! Shock it makes complete sense why you would have to remove it, maybe I've just been lucky lol!

DairyisClosed · 20/03/2018 19:28

@jitterbug most professional client facing roles treat facial piercings as a no no. When was theazt time you saw a solicitor wearing one? It's pretty common

Twofer · 20/03/2018 19:58

One of my SDs wanted her nose pierced when she was 14, which I didn’t agree with (I would have made her wait till she’d left school) but her mum and dad said she could. My one request was that she had it done at a proper piercing place, but her mum took her to a hairdresser and she did it with a piercing gun. It lasted a couple of days before it came out, as it was just a stud with no butterfly.
Her dad and I took her to a local tattoo parlour and got it done there, I had it done at the same time so I knew it was clean (and SD could watch and make sure she definitely wanted it done). We’ve both had them in ever since.
If your daughter wants it done, and her school is OK with it, then I say let her do it. It heals pretty quickly, and a retainer is hardly noticeable...but I’d recommend getting it done at the start of summer holidays so it has time to heal out of school

jitterbug5 · 20/03/2018 20:06

@DairyisClosed yes I agree! That's why I said it makes complete sense. I'm more shocked at it not crossing my mind to take mine out before interviews etc! Smile

NinjagoNinja · 20/03/2018 20:07

Yuk. Nose piercings are gross. The answer would be never in my house.

NinjagoNinja · 20/03/2018 20:08

I actually feel quite sick looking at someone with a nose piercing. Just imagine the snot gathering round the stud. Boak indeed.

angryburd · 20/03/2018 20:10

🙄

JacquesHammer · 20/03/2018 20:32

@NinjagoNinja gosh life must be tricky if you’re so delicate. If it helps there is no snot around my nose stud because I practice basic hygiene 🙄

Daisy - I was a Legal exec then licensed conveyancer. Both with nose piercing.

BoeandBall · 20/03/2018 20:47

Twofer nose piercings don't have a butterfly.

I don't think 14 is too young, plus it's not your own pretty face to "ruin", which a nose piercing doesn't do anyway. I think you might be overreacting a little here. I had my nose done at that age and my mum took me to have my tongue web pierced at 15 and tongue at 16 and I've had them for years. She's already waited two years, I think it's fair. It's not really a big deal

causeimunderyourspell · 20/03/2018 20:55

I would let her. The only facial piercings that bother me are lip piercings if they are in line with the gums. I speak from experience! Nose, ears, eyebrows, tongue, belly button whatever, wouldn't bother me as they can't be taken out. A piercing scar is just a dot so not a big deal if they want it out sometime in the future.

NotACleverName · 20/03/2018 21:29

Kimmy is right, folks. I got my nose pierced (at the grand old age of 29), haven't had a job since and survive on dust and rain water.

Lucyccfc · 20/03/2018 22:03

I had mine done at 16. Just used to wear a small gold stud (never got snot on the end of it).

Worked in a customer facing role for 8 years and just didn't wear it for work. More or less stopped wearing it by the time I got to 30 and no one would ever know I had it done - no marks or scars.

There are worse things she could do and regret that are permanent.

Twofer · 21/03/2018 03:56

@BoeandBall I know they don’t, as I said I have one myself, but when SD first had it done at the hairdresser, they used a normal piercing gun you’d use for ear piercing, and so it was an ear stud without a butterfly, hence it coming out within a couple of days as it wasn’t a proper nose stud. That’s why I had to take her to get it redone with a needle.

Creambun2 · 21/03/2018 04:14

Nose piercing are vulgar. Why allow your dd to get one?

LolitaLempicka · 21/03/2018 04:42

My daughter’s Nan took her when she was 14, 😂 It looks nice because she has a small cute button nose, her friend has a huge nose and a septum ring. —she looks like a bull—

AjasLipstick · 21/03/2018 05:11

Lolita well DD has a lovely small nose too....which is partly why I don't like the thought of something piercing it! :(

OP posts:
LolitaLempicka · 21/03/2018 05:32

But when she is bored she can take it out. I had mine from 13 to mid twenties, no scarring at all.

AjasLipstick · 21/03/2018 06:31

I keep googling all these scarred noses! Must stop. I was thinking of letting her get a septum piercing as they're easier to hide and any scarring, if it happened, wouldn't show as much.....

I know a mum who said 'No' to hair dye, piercings, ripped jeans etc etc. When that DD turned 18 she went out and did the lot plus a large tattoo. Grin

joangray38 · 21/03/2018 08:33

You can buy realistic fake clip on ones on etsy

JacquesHammer · 21/03/2018 08:52

Nose piercing are vulgar

Ah, a thread isn't a thread for me without @Creambun2 espousing something as vulgar. Regular as clockwork Grin

AjasLipstick · 21/03/2018 10:27

Joan those are for saddos apparently Hmm

Jacques Grin I think calling something vulgar is vulgar myself.
