Nose piercing.....how old is old enough?

AjasLipstick · 20/03/2018 06:54

My 14 year old wants her nose pierced. She's at a school which allows one facial piercing in secondary school but I am not sure about this.

She's been asking since she was about 12 and I did have my own done when I was about 17....but it seems faddy and too young.

Any advice? Do I just say no?

Utter bollocks Kimmy. Don’t talk crap.

ToastyFingers · 20/03/2018 16:35

You can be as PC as you like, but you never see a professional person with a nose stud

Oh shit, I'd better tell that to my medical friends.

I take it you'd refuse treatment from a doctor or nurse with a piercing or tattoo then, as they'd be unprofessional.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 20/03/2018 16:52

That's nice, MsHarry, but I don't think anyone suggested it would mean she'd bomb her GCSE's, just that it looks shit...
What's the connection?

TheMasterNotMargarita · 20/03/2018 17:02

I have a tattoo. Had my nose pierced at 17. Tummy button at 17.
Multiple ear piercings.
But at 14. Hell no.
Big difference between 14 and 16. There are reasons why body piercing/tattooing should come with an age restriction and any reputable studio would refuse under 16s.
And yes she can take it out but it might not heal up entirely without leaving a mark.
Each to their own but for me it's no way. If DD wants it done she'll have to wait!

Elphame · 20/03/2018 17:13

Depends - does she want to be poor for the rest of her life or would she like a shot at a well paid decent job? You can be as PC as you like, but you never see a professional person with a nose stud

Rubbish - I interviewed with a very stuffy firm of accountants for a senior client facing role and got the job. The stud was never mentioned.

I'd let her - piercings are temporary and easily removed.

What utter bullshit. I was a Legal Executive for years.

I now own my own business.

I have had my nose pierced since I was 16. I also have countless ear piercings and a tongue stud

bridgetreilly · 20/03/2018 17:27
  1. When she's an adult she can make her own choice.
JacquesHammer · 20/03/2018 17:38

What schools allow facial piercings??

The private school I attended did.

The state school my daughter will be going to does.

Dragonglass · 20/03/2018 17:42

I don't see a problem with allowing it at 14 if the school allows it. It can easily be removed later if need be.

angryburd · 20/03/2018 17:45

If she wants to be poor all her life then absolutely nothing matters does it? She may as well get everything pierced because there’s no point in bothering with school."

Gosh, you're right. If only piercings were able to be removed.

Qvar · 20/03/2018 17:45

Nope.

Flat no.

omBreROSE · 20/03/2018 17:51

kimmy
Seriously?
I hope the teens you try to influence ignore what you say.
You sound like an ugly snob.

FlouncyDoves · 20/03/2018 17:53

When you’re retired

Dljlr · 20/03/2018 18:07

My mother so convinced me that my desire for a nose piercing was 'faddy' that I waited until I was 33 before getting it done - and I'd wanted one since I was 11! My mum has given me a disapproving eyebrow but made no comment....

I think I'd probably ask her to wait and if she still wants it at 15 get it done for her birthday or something.

MsHarry · 20/03/2018 18:30

The connection is that I picked my battle in the end. Doing well at school and holding down a job helped me not panic and blow the piercing thing out of proportion. Of all teenage rebellions, I was happy to take the nose stud!

MsHarry · 20/03/2018 18:32

As for being poor all her life due to a nose piercing? Grin Really? One of the main reasons my DD chose it is because it's removable!!! in my best teenage voice....Duhh!!!

Morphene · 20/03/2018 18:35

16....

OP you say you don't want her putting holes in her face - which I would totally sympathise with...but how do you feel now about the fact you put holes in your lovely face?

BlurryFace · 20/03/2018 18:36

I had my nostril pierced at 14 - over a decade later and I've still got it! I've been toying with the idea of a septum ring as well.

Piercings are much more convenient than tatts, once they're healed you can take them out for work/formal stuff. I've left my nostril one for months and months before, though the ring did take a bit of force to put back in.

CarolineForbes · 20/03/2018 18:40

I got mine done at 14 and still have it in now 15 years later. And contrary to what Kimmy thinks I haven’t been poor all my life Hmm I work in management for a large company. If I really ever needed to I would take my nose ring out but it’s never once been an issue in my career.

JacquesHammer · 20/03/2018 18:42

Did your daughter particularly do it to rebel?

Besom · 20/03/2018 18:45

You do actually see plenty of professional folk with piercings these days. You get police covered in tattoos and all sorts.

BackBoiler · 20/03/2018 18:46

Why not? I think its less dangerous than ears!

MsHarry · 20/03/2018 18:47

I don't really know Jacques but I reckon it was a bit of carving out a look that went with the music she liked. Less of a rebellion against us and more of a rebellion of sorts against the 'crowd' at school.

Besom · 20/03/2018 18:50

I had mine done years ago and it closed up really quickly when I took it out. You wouldn't know I'd ever had it done.

DairyisClosed · 20/03/2018 18:53

I know people who did it when they were younger and lived to regret it and I know people who loved their nose piercing their entire life. My advice to you would be to say yes to a septum piercing. It is much easier to hide if she falls out of lovd/when it inevitably falls out of fashion
