I am a 41-year old feminist who's done all the reading about socialisation and gender stereotyping and yadda yadda yadda. DH put a magnetic knife strip up in the kitchen yesterday and was looking all solid and competent whilst wielding a drill and wearing a jumper. I was overcome by a desire to shag him.*

I'm hormonal and it had been a while, so I'm hoping that that was what was behind it, rather than me contemplating a future where I am turned on by the sight of fortysomething men engaged in minor acts of DIY. Saying that, I've asked him to think about putting up some shelves

*Unfortunately we have friends, and they were on their way.

I used to get tingles when DH hoovered the rug.

We've had two children since then though.

TheXXFactor · 18/03/2018 15:49

He looked remarkably like Tom Good

Oh god, no - Richard Briers gave me the creeps. Give me Jerry (and his chequebook) any day Wink

Dandellion · 18/03/2018 15:52

"hoovered the rug" is that a euphemism?

teaiseverything · 18/03/2018 15:55

When DH dresses up, I'm all, "You look handsome," but give me him in paint covered, baggy grey sweats and an old t shirt hammering/drilling/screwing (not like that you pesky lot) something over a suit any day.

DanFmDorking · 18/03/2018 15:58

... was looking all solid and competent whilst wielding a drill and wearing a jumper.
...but once he starts using a saw...
...Nothing as sexy as competence...
...but once he starts using a saw...
...my husband was wielding a chainsaw and an axe, cutting large hedges down ...

Noted, ladies - thank you
Dan

teaiseverything · 18/03/2018 16:00

@DanFmDorking if you can also pay an active role in the management of the household budget then you'll be laughing

teaiseverything · 18/03/2018 16:01

*play

Mrsmadevans · 18/03/2018 16:04

DH used to work for BT putting up the poles, no pun intended, he used to reek of creosote , it was lovely so manly!

Stayandfight · 18/03/2018 16:04

Dan I always say there is nothing sexier than a cleaned toilet when you didn't clean it yourself.

Dandellion · 18/03/2018 16:06

Dan no woman ever killed her man while he was doing the washing up.

Tinkobell · 18/03/2018 16:08

Yep. I'm with you, there's something primeval in it.

salsamad · 18/03/2018 16:10

My DH is a heating engineer/plumber so he wears black combat workwear trousers and a black polo shirt weekdays but when you add on top of that the smells of Boss White (a pipe sealing compound) and metal that's what really gets me weak at the knees Grin.

swivelchair · 18/03/2018 16:13

DP is completely, dangerously inept at this stuff (whilst having the self-confidence of an expert) - I roll my eyes (or sprint in and take the drill out of his hands before he loses a finger), but I secretly find it adorable...

But yes, the really dangerous times (risk of a 3rd child) are when he's being competent at something - cooking dinner whilst cleaning the kitchen, or striding in the house with one kid on his shoulders carrying the shopping in one hand etc. (preferably not braining the kid on the door frame as he comes in)

Dangerousmonkey · 18/03/2018 16:13

I am bisexual. If it helps at all men and women look a lot hotter weilding tools in a competent fashion. Similarly people being enthusiastic about something entirely innocent (I am nerdsexual too).

Dangerousmonkey · 18/03/2018 16:16

Ooo yes, competent post work hands being washed with manista is a bit hot!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 18/03/2018 16:16

Mr Squiffany is at his sexiest after cooking dinner

HairyBallTheorem · 18/03/2018 16:19

Nom, Dionysus, Sidge I'm joining the sexy reversing club too Blush

And I too am nerdosexual!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/03/2018 16:23

I get the best of both worlds. In his professional life DH wears perfectly cut suits and the way he looks makes me weak at the knees when he comes home from work, in our hobby and when needed around the house he wears well fitting DIY clothes and wields power tools with skill and aplomb... swoon!

Apparently he finds the way I know my way around a power tool and happily shoot up ladders etc quite sexy too.....

Frouby · 18/03/2018 16:25

Dp is a builder. Pretty crap at general diy tho.

But watching him assemble a chicken run in the summer gave me fanny gallops. He was so, erm, manly and competent. Chucking bits of timber around with his pencil behind his ear and screws in his pocket.

Sadly DIY at home usually ends in a row rather than a shag. He is a bit too manly sometimes and bashes stuff about.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 18/03/2018 16:25

Nope. YANBU. Competent brawn is very sexy. It’s why DIY takes so long to get finished!

outabout · 18/03/2018 16:26

Either you lot are taking the P$ss and having a laugh in a big way or I married the wrong woman! All I got when armed with chainsaw/drill/saucepan was 'when will it be finished'.

LaContessaDiPlump · 18/03/2018 16:30

Remember Ian from WC1? He was wonderfully competent but somehow also cuddly. I had a little crush on him Blush

Charolais · 18/03/2018 16:34

My husband is a rancher/cattleman, pilot, horseman and can make or fix anything. I find this a very sexy. I cannot imagine finding a pajama boy/metrosexual sexy.

Women want to breed with real men.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 18/03/2018 16:41

I’m very lucky, we're renovating and doing all the work ourselves so plenty of opportunity for me to enjoy watching DH in his dirty clothes, wield tools and hefting heavy things around.

DanFmDorking · 18/03/2018 16:42

Brilliant!!

I'm actually laughing at some of these Smile
