Was in Subway earlier (yup IAdefU for that) and went over to get the drinks out of the fridge cabinet. Only choices were Pepsi max, diet Pepsi, club zero, 7up free. I had a bottle of water in the end, as I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Called over to my OH the choices (classy) and the guy behind the till said it wasn't Subway but Pepsi's fault and this was how it was going to be from now on. WTF? I get it's cheaper with the sugar tax etc but it seems to be more and more how this is going. I'd rather drink sugar than the chemicals pumped into the sugar free versions. Just feels like the element of choice is stealthily being removed. Tried a quick Google but couldn't see anything about this. I was still in the process of forgiving Subway for ditching Coke! I'm not about to combust with rage about it but just wondered what you all thought.

@InfiniteCurve from memory it's because artificial sweeteners increase appetite

sportyfool · 22/03/2018 14:47

I bought full fat lemonade the other day and it had sweetners in it !!!! ... I'm trying to eliminate them so presumed they wouldn't be in full sugar versions .. apparently I was wrong ! 🙄🙄

gluteustothemaximus · 22/03/2018 16:11

Thanks Jamie Oliver.

You’ve ruined drinks.

Not content with a sugar version and diet version (which suited everyone) - ALL versions contain sweeteners.

Only 2 drinks left without sweeteners is coke and Pepsi.

Plus Waitrose lemonade.

Otherwise it’s all sweetener shite.

YoloSwaggins · 22/03/2018 16:42

I agree about cakes - I always use way less sugar than the recipe. I find cakes so sickly in the UK, you can't have a good slab because they're too fucking sweet.

In China all their cakes have the sweetness level of brioche so you can have 5

Jamiefraserskilt · 23/03/2018 00:35

Drives me nuts. Pizza hut has started doing this too. You can buy a bottle of coke/pepsi for an over inflated price versus bottomless diet shit that upsets your stomach and has that awful aftertaste, for considerably less.
Fgs, I am a fully functioning adult who can make a decision on my food and drink without being nannyed into it. I will no longer go to places that do not cater for adults.

FranticallyPeaceful · 23/03/2018 00:37

Yanbu. Those sweeteners are way worse for you than sugar

cannotmakemymindup · 23/03/2018 01:40

Ugh I hate the taste of sweeteners and I can always tell.
No not Ribena!!! I agree just wish they would slowly reduce sugar levels in drinks rather than replace with sweeteners. Now drinks which have both are so sweet, too sweet. I do not understand why companies think they taste good. I too spend lots of time searching for sweetener free.
I want my Dds occasional sweet drink to be naturally sweetened not odd after taste. I already water down her fruit juice I can do the same with Ribena, ie have it weaker than usual. We do not need someone else making the choice for me.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 23/03/2018 18:39

But they havent widrawn cigarettes from sale - instead forcing people to have patches have they? Plus no one knows the long term effects of all the chemicals/artificial sweeteners yet do they?

Catatlarge · 24/03/2018 10:54

@jamiefraserskilt - see my previous post on this thread- the sugar tax will increase the box of syrup cost massively, meaning that the restaurants /pubs can’t afford to offer the full fat version as bottomless.
It’s not their fault, and it’s not the suppliers fault, it’s the sugar tax levied by the govt.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/03/2018 21:45

"But they havent widrawn cigarettes from sale "

They haven't withdrawn fizzy drinks from sale either, they're just not the option in some places. You can still buy them at the supermarket, you're just now in the position of those who want the diet drinks in that they're not always available.

Gwenhwyfar · 24/03/2018 21:47

"Anyone with half a brain can see that they are generally a chemical sludge filled with artificial sweeteners to make then slightly palatable. I have no doubt that comsumption of this stuff is going to cause problems down the line"

As opposed to full sugar fizzy drinks which are just great, I suppose???

Mum2jenny · 24/03/2018 21:50

It's getting to the point you need to start making lemonade from lemons and sugar to avoid the insidious creep of the control police.

Artificial sweeteners make me very ill so I must avoid them unless I wish to shit through the eye of a needle.

randomsabreuse · 24/03/2018 22:00

Actually it's quite difficult to buy full sugar drinks at many supermarkets. My local co-op has Coke and that is it. Aldi has nothing at all other than pure fruit juice and smoothies. Big supermarkets might have some choice if you're lucky. My corner shop has a wide selection of cigarette and booze but no drinks without sweeteners!

KatyMac · 24/03/2018 22:07

I was in sainsburys today & I couldn't get a small drinkable bottle of anything with sugar no Pepsi or coke in drink sized containers (not even tins)

I'm going to be stuffed if I ever need a drink while I am out

madeyemoodysmum · 24/03/2018 23:57

"Anyone with half a brain can see that they are generally a chemical sludge filled with artificial sweeteners to make then slightly palatable. I have no doubt that comsumption of this stuff is going to cause problems down the line"

This again x100000000000

gluteustothemaximus · 25/03/2018 00:12

The tobacco industry is worth billions. Despite killing millions.

The artificial sweetener market is also worth billions. There’s nothing to suggest it’s for the good of our health. Profit is the only thing that matters here.

reddingtn · 25/03/2018 00:18

There was a thread a while back where a poster's DH was rushed to hospital. While in the waiting room (he was in icu) she went to get something to eat. All manner of unhealthy sandwiches and snacks were available inc chocolate and crisps. Yet all the drinks were diet/sweeteners.

I felt so sorry for her as she said all she wanted was a 'full fat coke'. It seems so stupid and 'nanny state' of the hospital. Sugary tea is offered during times of crisis ffs and they took away her choice Sad

gluteustothemaximus · 25/03/2018 00:21

I wouldn’t be surprised if artificial sweeteners creep into foods as well. I think they’re already in some yoghurts.

DuckBilledAardvark · 25/03/2018 00:31

I thought I would disagree with you but I agree! I don't drink fizzy drinks but I do think companies should have just hiked the price, rather than pump them full of [more] shite. I'd rather my children at actual sugar than artificial sweetners.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2018 12:56

"Yet all the drinks were diet/sweeteners.

I felt so sorry for her as she said all she wanted was a 'full fat coke'. It seems so stupid and 'nanny state' of the hospital."

But it would be fine if all she wanted was a diet coke and only full fat coke was available, because that is very often the situation for me.

bruffin · 25/03/2018 13:05

glutus

AS have been in other foods for years. They have been putting it in baked beans for quite a while,as well as prawn flavour crisps.
There are even a few brands of cider ie strongbow now have AS in them.

Sallystyle · 25/03/2018 13:26

I live on Pepsi Max and artificial sweeteners do not worry me at all.

However, there should be choice for those who don't want them in their diet and they sure seem to be added to loads of stuff these days.

YANBU

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2018 13:42

"However, there should be choice for those who don't want them in their diet and they sure seem to be added to loads of stuff these days."

But there is a choice. You can buy the sugar stuff in the supermarket, the fact that some cafes may have chosen to only have the diet stuff isn't really a great injustice. It's the same as the previous situation of places only having the full sugar version.

gluteustothemaximus · 25/03/2018 13:58

You can buy the sugar stuff in the supermarket

You really can't. Down the entire aisle of squashes, fruit waters and fizzy drinks, there are hardly any without sweeteners. In fact, I think we're down to just coke and pepsi.

Trying to find a drink with just sugar is in becoming very very difficult.

It used to be very clear before. Normal version = sugar, diet version = sweeteners.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2018 14:04

glute - It's pretty difficult for me to find Fanta 0 is a small shop but the full sugar Fanta is always there.
