Was in Subway earlier (yup IAdefU for that) and went over to get the drinks out of the fridge cabinet. Only choices were Pepsi max, diet Pepsi, club zero, 7up free. I had a bottle of water in the end, as I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Called over to my OH the choices (classy) and the guy behind the till said it wasn't Subway but Pepsi's fault and this was how it was going to be from now on. WTF? I get it's cheaper with the sugar tax etc but it seems to be more and more how this is going. I'd rather drink sugar than the chemicals pumped into the sugar free versions. Just feels like the element of choice is stealthily being removed. Tried a quick Google but couldn't see anything about this. I was still in the process of forgiving Subway for ditching Coke! I'm not about to combust with rage about it but just wondered what you all thought.

Now it's the other way around everyone seems to be up in arms so it's obviously not about choice.

Except it is. You didn't speak out when your choice wasn't available. That doesn't mean that the people who are willing to speak out about their choice not being available should now shut up.

BishopBrennansArse · 27/03/2018 10:33

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou slightest hint of sorbitol and I get diahorrea - sympathies

Gwenhwyfar · 27/03/2018 19:37

"I’ve never known her have trouble buying one"

So she doesn't go to corner shops or pubs or cafes? Diet coke is not so difficult to find, but the other diet options are.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 28/03/2018 07:27

So she doesn't go to corner shops or pubs or cafes?

She goes to all those places! As do I and I am the one who is finding it increasingly difficult to get something I can safely drink.

I understand Fanta Zero is your drink of choice? You obviously are I in the South East of England as it is very much available here. The local cafe stocks it in cans, as do Sainsbury’s and Tesco, Ocado stock it in various formats, the off licence and newsagent near where I work both have it as well. I’ve been on a bit of a mission to find some lovely sugary shite that I can drink and am really noticing the huge amount of no added sugar drinks on the shelves.....

Lethaldrizzle · 28/03/2018 07:35

Storm - the only reason you drank full sugar coke is because you chose to. Other drinks are available

bruffin · 28/03/2018 07:47

Lethaldrizzle
Drinks with AS taste hortible. Its genetic, about 35% of the population can taste AS as unpleasant.
Stevia makes thing too sweet as well. They should be retraining peoples palates instead by gradually reducing sweetness, it would be much better option and doesnt take long at all either.

Lethaldrizzle · 28/03/2018 07:49

So drink so something else. I don't drink fizzy drinks generally and if I do I really cannot tell the difference. But I believe other drinks are available

bruffin · 28/03/2018 07:59

What soft drinks are readily available ? I used to like iced teas which were lower calorie than coke, now ruined with stevia.
Water is boring if its the and in the summer i infuse fruit in water for my desk at work.
I have found some flavoured waters that dont have AS but the majority do.

bruffin · 28/03/2018 08:00

Is not just fizzy drinks that have AS.

HadronCollider · 28/03/2018 08:23

Sorry haven't read the full thread but YADNBU!! They have killed Ribena with the artificial sweetners, it used to be my favourite drink since a child, I used to add hot water to it for a guilty hot sweet treat. No more! Now both the 'no added sugar' and the original flavour version contain artificial sweetners which imo are worse, and the taste of the new ribena is artificial and yuck tasting. They say they did it to conform to the sugar tax. Well I will no longer buy it. People have the right to make choices, and I disagree that my right to make a choice is effectively being legislated out.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2018 08:28

IrnBru has also been altered and they no longer sell any version without sweeteners.

KatyMac · 28/03/2018 08:47

ok I want to buy a small bottle or carton of still (or fizzy) sugary shit to drink while I am out and about

I'm not supposed to drink water or fruit juice (well I've excluded orange, apple, pineapple, mango but peach seems ok - do better with clear juice no pulp)

Any suggestions?

expatinscotland · 28/03/2018 08:54

Well, Katy, because Gwen personally finds it hard to find FantaZero in shops, this means everyone else should only be able to buy sweetener-laden drinks from shops because life's been hard for her in that department.

Bonkerz · 28/03/2018 08:55

Harvester no longer serve full fat fizzy pop.
Diet drinks give me horrendous diarrhoea as I'm allergic to the sweeteners.
I'd rather pay the sugar tax to be honest. I was forced to drink cider !!

Vangoghsear · 28/03/2018 08:57

I was in a queue in a Subway at lunchtime recently and every single person in the queue in front of me was overweight - more overweight than me that is.

madeyemoodysmum · 28/03/2018 09:17

Briffin
exactly what I think.
Cut down the sugar by 5%. Then 10% and so on till an acceptable level is reached. Don't shove sweetener crap in that taste vile and messes people's guts and heads up.

Any thing that causes migraine is a warning to me That can't be healthy long term.

HadronCollider · 28/03/2018 09:24

Bonkerz You know its scary but I have also found myself reaching for a Kopparberg or Old Mout cider for the occasional sweet hit instead of the fizzies or Ribenas. Omg. I wasn't evenfully aware of why I was doing it until you mentioned it, I was doing it sort of subconsciouslyBlush.

I daresay others find themselves doing similar it'll be a great gateway for a susceptible minority to alcoholism. Well done nanny state!

KatyMac · 28/03/2018 10:10

Is Cider sweet? I'm teetotal so I don't know

Maybe I'll try it?

HadronCollider · 28/03/2018 10:20

Yes, and some are sweeter than others depending on the fruit used, the strawberry one is quite sweet imo.

KatyMac · 28/03/2018 10:30

Thanks - I can't have strawberry - & DH has just reminded me I can't have alcohol either, I've never really wanted to before so I hadn't remembered

randomsabreuse · 28/03/2018 10:35

You can get alcohol free coders which are nice. Schloer also ok at the moment.

randomsabreuse · 28/03/2018 10:35

ciders but need to check artificial sweetener status...

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 28/03/2018 10:41

YaDnbu.

I absolutely hate artificial sweeteners. And I hate the unknown health risks that comes with them. I am an adult and if I want to drink full sugar cola then I will do so. Just as if I wanted a diet cola I would choose that one!

In my work the ONLY diet drink we sell is cola, the rest are full sugar Wink

Hahayoulooked · 28/03/2018 12:32

I went to Five Guys last week, where they have a coke freestyle machine where you can pick a variety of flavours in coke or Diet Coke, as well as Fanta and Powerade. Diet Coke had all the flavours, but you could only now get coke on its own (I like Vanilla Coke), Now I know why that option as been taken away.

And thanks for the heads up on Ribena and Fanta, I had no idea.

Lethaldrizzle · 28/03/2018 13:20

Water's nice
