AIBU to want to be free to choose to drink sugary shite if I want to?

Was in Subway earlier (yup IAdefU for that) and went over to get the drinks out of the fridge cabinet. Only choices were Pepsi max, diet Pepsi, club zero, 7up free. I had a bottle of water in the end, as I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Called over to my OH the choices (classy) and the guy behind the till said it wasn't Subway but Pepsi's fault and this was how it was going to be from now on. WTF? I get it's cheaper with the sugar tax etc but it seems to be more and more how this is going. I'd rather drink sugar than the chemicals pumped into the sugar free versions. Just feels like the element of choice is stealthily being removed. Tried a quick Google but couldn't see anything about this. I was still in the process of forgiving Subway for ditching Coke! I'm not about to combust with rage about it but just wondered what you all thought.

Appletizer is also safe for now.

HadronCollider · 28/03/2018 14:13

Looks like I'll be turning into an Appletizer girl then. Does anyone think writing to any of the companies involved to air our dissatisfaction would help? Maybe if lots of people all write to them they'll consider offering the sugar versions at a more expensive price rather than aspartame with flavourings.

bruffin · 28/03/2018 14:27

San pelligrino is ok and belvoir

KatyMac · 28/03/2018 14:35

I messaged Ribena on facebook pointing out that changing the recipe in the same packaging was at best thoughtless and worst dangerous

They said sweetners were perfectly safe

I replied "Safe? Like peanuts?"

DH reminded me I'm not allowed alcohol either.....never mind

Mummaloves · 28/03/2018 14:36

I haven drunk Ribena for years and years - until they changed it a few weeks ago and replaced the sugar with sweetener. It now tastes vile. Amazing how people are free to buy high percent alcohol, and strong cigarettes - but not a drink with sugar in it !

juneybean · 28/03/2018 14:38

I'd quite happily pay more for a sugary drink, I'm finding more and more "full sugar drinks" are being swapped with sweeteners and I don't realise until I'm drinking it.

Lethaldrizzle · 28/03/2018 14:41

I'm not sure you can really compare sugar to alcohol although they are very similar. People don't generally drink alcohol all day long and it's mainly adults. Fizzy drinks are seen as ok to drink whenever and by children.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/03/2018 14:41

Sad Sad Sad Bruffin

THEY'VE FUCKING RUINED SAN PELLEGRINO NOW TOO.

I'm devastated and angry about this. Why the fuck do I have to have shitty artificially sweetened drinks for my very occasional drink of pop (I bought 2 x 6 packs of San Pellegrino months ago and still have some left - I literally drink one or two cans a month) because some people are getting fat by guzzling the stuff daily? Why?

San Pellegrino is bloody expensive enough. People who buy it do so because they like it. Just put the sugar tax on it instead of filling it full of crap. If the people who bought it were price sensitive to a few pence a can, they'd buy any of the myriad of cheaper drinks out there.

I hate the taste, can't stand it and have to choose my drinks carefully. And it makes DP really ill. He once had an awful reaction after drinking a couple of diet cokes during a family pub meal where he was driving, sweaty, being sick, and now won't touch the stuff.

Pinkvoid · 28/03/2018 14:45

YANBU, I also hate sweeteners.

I am pregnant and craving Fanta. My local coop only sells ‘Fanta zero’ which I just refuse to drink. The fizzy rubicon has been drastically changed recently and now just tastes and smells bloody weird. Also my local McDonald’s (of all places! The irony!) have stopped selling full sugar drinks. I find it absolutely ludicrous.

Lethaldrizzle · 28/03/2018 14:49

If it helps with the growing obesity crisis I'm all for it.

Tink2007 · 28/03/2018 14:50

Legoland and Chessington have also stopped selling full fat Coke. They still sell it in bottles but not for the refills etc.

madeyemoodysmum · 28/03/2018 14:51

Seriously!!!!!!!!!

Not sanpellegrino as well.

FUCK SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KatyMac · 28/03/2018 14:52

It's really unlikely to Lethaldrizzle, there is starting to be good evidense that artifical sweetners encourage both obesity and type 2 diabetes - the work is being done in several countries

It isn't the cause, but it really isn't helping

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/03/2018 14:58

I'm ok with drinks, I drink water or tea mainly but stop putting that sweetener shit in yoghurts, I'm currently eating the muller quark ones and they have no sweetener, suprisingly for Muller.

bruffin · 28/03/2018 15:27
Sad
eurochick · 28/03/2018 15:28

Nooooo. Don't tell me they've ruined SAN Pellegrino!

Notwellbitch · 28/03/2018 15:29

Water's nice

People can drink lots of water daily and also enjoy the occasional fizzy drink. I do. I guess though since all humans really need is water then maybe everything else should be banned

i'm not sure you can really compare sugar to alcohol although they are very similar. People don't generally drink alcohol all day long and it's mainly adults. Fizzy drinks are seen as ok to drink whenever and by children.

Thats nonsense. Hardly anyone drinks fizzy drinks all day long. The same as how a small minority of alcohol users drink it all day long despite knowing about the health effects. Most people can make the right choice

This won't do anything about the obesity crisis.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 28/03/2018 15:30

Oh no not San Pellegrino too. 😭

This is ridiculous. I don’t dislike water...I drink a lot of it but sometimes I want something else.........

expatinscotland · 28/03/2018 16:26

FA to do with obesity, it's just another levy fucking tax.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/03/2018 16:33

Well if it's 'just another tax' it's a shit one, because it won't raise any money because it seems that all the manufacturers are reformulating their products to avoid it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/03/2018 16:40

It would bother me less if the choice was there, but it's not.
All artificial sweeteners give me the raging shites, I don't want to eat/drink them.

PartyRingss · 28/03/2018 16:41

My ex dh used to have a rant when he went for a drink in the pub (with a Harvester restaurant in) and would ask for Vodka Tonic but they only did Slimline Tonic which he hates. Apparently it's what customers want Hmm

AngeloMysterioso · 26/04/2018 20:13

UGH Angry

Sprite now contains aspartame.

AIBU to want to be free to choose to drink sugary shite if I want to?
CanIhavedessertfirst · 26/04/2018 20:43

YADNBU I hate that aspartame is making it's way into everything. I didn't even know about the ribena recipe change until I bought a bottle and it tasted like shit. Also, kids corner yogurts also now have sweetener, which again wasn't stated explicitly
