Was in Subway earlier (yup IAdefU for that) and went over to get the drinks out of the fridge cabinet. Only choices were Pepsi max, diet Pepsi, club zero, 7up free. I had a bottle of water in the end, as I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Called over to my OH the choices (classy) and the guy behind the till said it wasn't Subway but Pepsi's fault and this was how it was going to be from now on. WTF? I get it's cheaper with the sugar tax etc but it seems to be more and more how this is going. I'd rather drink sugar than the chemicals pumped into the sugar free versions. Just feels like the element of choice is stealthily being removed. Tried a quick Google but couldn't see anything about this. I was still in the process of forgiving Subway for ditching Coke! I'm not about to combust with rage about it but just wondered what you all thought.

Cigarette smokers probably said the same once. Just go to a different shop! Or drink water

IanRushesInadequateFlushes · 17/03/2018 20:05

Aren't subways franchises? Maybe it's just the Op's franchisee?

Mum2jenny · 17/03/2018 20:05

YANBU I think it's up to an individual whether they want to drink sugar free shite or healthy sugar loaded options. Given I drink around 2 cans of pop a month, I want the option of avoiding the nasty aspartame type crap. I like sugar, but the 'safe' alternatives, no fucking way! Looks like I'll be drinking fizzy water adulterated with alcohol or fruity syrups designed for putting on icecreams ( unless they are now regulated!!)

iheartmichellemallon · 17/03/2018 20:07

YANBU - very annoying nanny state! I think Pizza Hut have done this too. Angry

moita · 17/03/2018 20:07

Our local Sainsburys cafe is the same - all sugar-free fizzy drinks. They still sell fruit juices and smoothies. I realise these have vitamins etc in but they are still full of sugar.

Dungeondragon15 · 17/03/2018 20:11

YANBU. I didn't realise that they were doing this as I rarely have a sugary drink but if I do want one I would be annoyed off if the only choice was something with nasty tasting, diarrhoea inducing artificial sweeteners.

Mum2jenny · 17/03/2018 20:13

At least with sugar you know how it will affect you longterm, the other 'healthier' options are not so sure!
Just cut the crap out of your food choices and that'll be better in the long run.
There is no way I'm going to be consuming sugar substitutes, as it is going to be like the butter caper....bad for you, until the powers that be think it's ok!

Idontdowindows · 17/03/2018 20:13

Artificial sweeteners make me bloat like I'm 12 months pregnant :(

It's not unreasonable to expect choice in these places, it's not as if you go to them for your health anyway!

HodorHodorHodor · 17/03/2018 20:16

Slightly I think what some of using this thread are concerned about is the as yet unknown long term effects of the so called healthy alternatives.i really don't drink fizzy drinks very often so I don't think I'm going to have too much of an impact on the NHS in this regard.

Drizzle I did mention in my OP that I chose a bottle of water today.

I hate this too. I hate sweeteners too.

ReginaldMolehusband · 17/03/2018 20:19

The New Zealand Ministry of Health recently commissioned a study from its own advisors as to the health benefits that might accrue from a sugar tax.
They could find no evidence from any country in the World that had enforced a sugar tax that it had benefited health in any way and "The ministry also warned that the quality of evidence presented in favour of sugar taxes "is a major concern"."
It's a complete crock of shit, at least Coke are keeping the sugar and not like the rest ruining their products.

expatinscotland · 17/03/2018 20:45

Fucking hate sweeteners and curse that twat Jamie Oliver every time I see him.

teaandtoast · 17/03/2018 20:49

I won't buy drinks with sweeteners, only sugar. I don't like the taste and I worry about potential risks.

shesakeeper · 17/03/2018 20:52

YANBU. I have severe pregnancy sickness and a drink of sugary cola can save my day, particularly if it's served with ice and from a pre mix machine. Diet drinks make me even sicker.

Ikea have done it too. And their old sugary own brand cola was a particular favourite of mine.

www.pepsico.co.uk/live/story/the-subway-brand-is-recognised-for-helping-consumers-cut-sugar-consumption-with-the-help-of-pepsi-max-and-britvic/

Sorry, I think I have found the answer but I can't get the link to work. Basically, you are being "nudged" into cutting sugar consumption.

Lethaldrizzle · 17/03/2018 21:38

Sugar is not great stuff

expatinscotland · 17/03/2018 21:41

Sweeteners are really not good stuff. I usually get a coffee or tea in Subway so avoid this type of nanny state bollocks.

Funkyslippers · 17/03/2018 21:47

Idont it's not as if you go to them for your health anyway!
Actually I do go there for a healthier option for lunch. If you choose a lean meat & salad it's definitely healthy

OliviaBenson · 17/03/2018 21:48

I had bowel problems for years until I stiles having sweeteners. It gives me the rage how they are more and more being used in everyday products. Angry

maddiemookins16mum · 17/03/2018 21:48

We all know sugar is not great stuff (within reason) but as adults we're able to decide that ourselves.

I bloody love sugar btw.

g1itterati · 17/03/2018 21:53

Someone told me there are about 7 teaspoons of sugar in a can of Coke, Sprite, Fanta, etc. Never had those drinks since and that was 20 years ago. I don't like the weird taste of sweeteners either - so just avoid all these drinks, sugar-free or not!

ILoveDolly · 17/03/2018 21:53

Yes this whole sugar tax thing drives me mad. There are plenty of nice healthy foods to eat, water is freely available, but if I want sugary things and a fizzy drink that is my business

madeyemoodysmum · 17/03/2018 21:54

It's bloody outrageous and I get the rage too about it.

My prediction is that in 20 years they will say oops. Sweeteners was a mistake just like they did with fats in the late 70s.

Eat what nature gives up in moderation and we will be fine.

hate this nannying !!!!!

It's even creeping into the tonic now for my gin.

drspouse · 17/03/2018 21:56

upsie my diabetic DH carries cereal bars though orange juice is good too.
He would be happy to see a much wider range of sugar free drinks.

SingaSong12 · 17/03/2018 21:56

I actually prefer Diet Coke. I prefer proper Ribena but don't mind low sugar.

I object to the lack of choice. I should have the option of Ribena at extra cost. If shops then find that the full sugar version isn't popular enough I'm sure they will stop selling it.

I guess that the chains are stopping full sugar versions because you get charged for a fizzy drink take the cup/glass and serve yourself. The restaurant will lose money if one choice (the full sugar one) is more expensive. They must have decided it's not financially worth having separate prices and would have to police which drink was taken.
