Was in Subway earlier (yup IAdefU for that) and went over to get the drinks out of the fridge cabinet. Only choices were Pepsi max, diet Pepsi, club zero, 7up free. I had a bottle of water in the end, as I can't stand artificial sweeteners. Called over to my OH the choices (classy) and the guy behind the till said it wasn't Subway but Pepsi's fault and this was how it was going to be from now on. WTF? I get it's cheaper with the sugar tax etc but it seems to be more and more how this is going. I'd rather drink sugar than the chemicals pumped into the sugar free versions. Just feels like the element of choice is stealthily being removed. Tried a quick Google but couldn't see anything about this. I was still in the process of forgiving Subway for ditching Coke! I'm not about to combust with rage about it but just wondered what you all thought.

Stevia leaves a revolting aftertaste as does the other one they've started using

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 18/03/2018 20:34

YANBU.
I would happily pay more for full sugar drinks than the new recipes.
Irn bru is awful now Hmm!! The way I see it is I'm an adult and if I chose to drink sugary drinks I will, if I wanted diet I would drink diet.

duffaho · 18/03/2018 20:37

I realised I was sensitive to sweeteners about 15 years ago and stopped being able to have soft drinks whenever I wanted due to constant changes in ingredients.
I only drink water if im in a pub and driving because I cant depend on bar staff to give me a sweetener free drink otherwise.
I dont believe for one minute that the use of sweeteners has anything to do with health or weight and everything to do with making money for manufacturers. And Im another who fears a health crisis in years to come .

This thread is a bit hysterical.
I eat out at least 5 times a week (including Subway) and have yet to see anywhere where you can’t get a full sugar drink.
I’d be happy to see less sugar anyway. full sugar drink make people fat and we already have a health crisis - obesity!! soft drinks are a major contributing factor. It’s all well saying it’s my choice to eat and drink crap but then people get fat and sick and expect the NHS to pay for their lifestyle choices.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/03/2018 21:19

full sugar drink make people fat

I’ve only drunk full sugar for nearly fifty years, my children have only ever had the full sugar stuff as I don’t buy the artificial stuff. None of us are fat!

YANBU

I went to Pizza Hut and was told the same thing

Well actually I think it's ridiculous that they would willingly sell me as much pizza as I want but not one full fat drink with my meal. I know which is worse!

OnARainbow · 18/03/2018 21:32

I had a conversation with OH the other day about all this sugar policing that is going on!

My mum and I went for a bite to eat in a local pub and I ordered a 'coke', waitress checked whether a Pepsi Max would be ok. I commented on having a normal Pepsi please (not a huge fan of Pepsi but if I drink it it has to be standard Pepsi) she informed me they don't sell the normal one anymore! Diet alternatives only!

So we are basically getting given an option of buying sweetener filled crappy drinks or other heathy drinks.
Ummm what if I want to have a sugar filled drink, if I'm paying for it then tax me some more but don't think you can con me into drinking nasty sweetener based drinks.
Noticed in Maccies they have signs up advising of the sugar tax being imposed on coke from April too 🙄

SweetMoon · 18/03/2018 21:41

YANBU. On the rare occasion I have a fizzy drink I would want the version with sugar in, not a load of chemicals. Same for my children. I never buy anything which says sugar free as it's allways full of chemicals instead. And none of us are fat or have rotten teeth because these things are a treat as opposed to the norm.

expatinscotland · 18/03/2018 22:25

'full sugar drink make people fat '

More calories than one expends make people fat, not 'full sugar' drinks, which actually have no fat in them. Sweeteners make my son tic (he has autism). I used to treat them to the odd 7UP but now, it'll have to be Coke as that's the only thing left that's not full of sweeteners. Happens maybe once a quarter so I'm okay with that. DD2 drinks tea now, anyway. She needs every calorie she can get. Interestingly enough, those awful energy drinks are still loaded with sugar.

Pinkvoid · 18/03/2018 22:38

It’s the same at my local McDonald’s believe it or not Grin. So it’s ok to eat a 1000 calorie meal filled with saturated fats but we don’t want you having a sugary drink. Protect your teeth, not your heart.

YANBU

In my local pub I went for a meal recently and asked for a Pepsi, it was only once I got back to the table that I realised I had a Pepsi max. I wasn't impressed, when I asked they said they didn't have it anymore as the company (it's a franchise) would have to make £2 billion more a year to afford it Hmm
Anyway I won't be ordering any fizzy drinks there anymore as I can't stand the sweeteners, I felt sick drinking that one. I would rather be able to make the decision for myself.

Also during my pregnancy I had Hyperemesis Gravidarum and full fat Coke was one of the only drinks I could stomach almost the whole time - not ideal but seeing as I lost over a stone whole being pregnant I'm not bothered. When you're that sick just keeping anything down is important.

SingaSong12 · 20/03/2018 21:36

Was in Morissons cafe - they have bottles of full coke but the machine now only has diet drinks.

Amanduh · 20/03/2018 21:55

Yanbu. I like the diet versions but it’s ridiculous that you cannot choose a drink but can have brownies, cookies, ice cream, pizzas etc as much as you want at these places banning them! Nonsensical

UrgentScurryfunge · 20/03/2018 22:25

I'm infuriated by the secretive way that it's being done. I haven't drunk lemonade for years because it became too difficult to get a non-artifical-sweetnered lemonade.

Recently I bought my usual high-juice from the supermarket. A different style of labelling didn't ring alarm bells as they have rebranded a lot of their own brands in recent months. The soapy taste then lingering aftertaste gave it away which then resulted in me checking the small print.

If I want a low-sugar option, I'm perfectly capable of drinking water, and frequently do. What I don't need is an aspartame headache for the rest of the day, or the lingering soapy taste of stevia type alternatives. Oddly both give me a dificult to quench thirst.

On my most recent visit to the supermarket, the shelves were full of the new stealth-diet versions, many of which had the labels turned small print round suggesting that people had been checking them. The small shelf of bottles of Belvoir and Bottlegreen cordials were well on the way to selling out.

I have a fairly balanced diet, am a healthy weight and run up to half marathon distance. I don't need to be secretively nannied into drinking unpleasant artificial substitutes that don't agree with me.

madeyemoodysmum · 20/03/2018 22:33

I going to take my own drinks to a restaurant from now on if this is going to be the policy If they cause a fuss I will say they have taken my choices from me so I'm bringing my own.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 20/03/2018 22:59

Was having conversation about this earlier. We both believe that, after one can of full fat sugary drink, that we are sated and struggle to drink 2, wheras, another friend drinks diet coke, says she can easily drink three.......

RainbowGlitterFairy · 20/03/2018 23:19

the manager at my local McDonalds tells me they are putting coke up by 14p to cover the tax, but all other fizzy drinks were already below the sugar level for the tax or are changing their recipes. The corner shop opposite are only stocking diet and sugar free versions. I can't drink diet/sugar free drinks (gives me migraines) so I will now have to go to McDonalds when i fancy a fizzy drink, where I will happily pay the extra 14p, and probably buy a cheeseburger while I'm at it.

Herbalteahippie · 20/03/2018 23:35

Just buy them from somewhere else, sugary pop is readily available than decent drinking water.

opionated · 21/03/2018 01:10

in subway they have a fridge of drinks and a cup drink where you get a plastic cup and poor the drinks from a machine yourself that machine always has normal pepsi and a normal lemonade therefore the fridge is not going to have normal pepsi.
tldr subway sells normal pepsi

Jellyjumpers · 21/03/2018 01:36

As others have said i am intollerant to sweeteners and do not want to be restricted in this way.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 21/03/2018 07:25

Just buy them from somewhere else, sugary pop is readily available than decent drinking water.

The problem is that (in the U.K. now), ‘sugary pop’ or squash etc are NOT readily available anymore.

I used to buy Waitrose high juice black currant as it was free from artificial sweeteners. Since I last bought a bottle in December they have stopped selling it. The only artificial sweetener free black currant (its an organic one) they do stock sells out as soon as they get it on the shelves!

itstimeforanamechange · 21/03/2018 08:09

I agree about choice, if people want to drink it then they can pay the sugar tax. I don't agree with simply reformulating the drinks. Sainsbury's have discontinued two juice drinks my husband likes recently, I don't know if both are to do with the sugar tax or it's just coincidence, but he's not happy! Partly because neither me nor my son like them, so he knows nobody else will have drunk them when he comes to get some.

As for artificial sweeteners, I'm pretty sure they are even less healthy than sugar and hate them.

itstimeforanamechange · 21/03/2018 08:10

And full fat coke (or pepsi) is actually very good for migraines. At least, it stops me feeling sick when I have one.

bruffin · 21/03/2018 08:17

Why dont they just make some drinks less sweet. Badoit have bought some nice flavoured fizzy water that is low calorie and no AS , another alternative is Joule.
The ruined Nestea by adding AS.
