To be uncomfortable about the use of this image in Clark's?

This is a slightly weird one, so I'm prepared to get laughed at / flamed, but here goes...
The child in the attached image (at least I hope it's attached) is "W" sitting. Now where it's very good for showing off the shoes, it's also developmentally a really bad position for kids to sit in, and one that parents / guardians should be actively discouraging kids to use, unless it's just for a really short period of time. It can indicate weakness in the hips and trunk. Am I a little silly for thinking that they shouldn't have the child in this position in their advertising??
Disclaimer; am an AHP so I NOTICE these things!

Is it harmful to sit in that position if there are no joint issues/hypermobility? I would have thought it would only be a problem if there were underlying hip issues.

clyde5591 · 19/03/2018 18:05

Maybe overthinking a little:)

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 19/03/2018 18:05

Hmm just realised after posting that there could be undiagnosed joint issues with a child so I suppose it could cause damage before an issue is recognised. Confused

Fabellini · 19/03/2018 18:08

I’ve sat like that since I was a little girl...I’m now in my early 50’s. I didn’t know it’s not a good position, it’s always felt very natural and comfortable for me. My mum still sits like that too, and she’s 79.
I’ve never been a “bendy” person (was rubbish at the playground gymnastics...handstands, cartwheels, backflips), but maybe I just have flexible knees? Confused

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 19/03/2018 18:10

Your mum sits like that and she's nearly 80? I'm pretty impressed with her agility!

cheval · 19/03/2018 18:13

My son always sat like that when little. Too late to do anything about it now, he’s 21 and with no hip or knee problems.
Don’t think I was ever flexible enough to get into that position and my hips and knees are awful!

NonnoMum · 19/03/2018 18:14

Looks weird to me.

Lethaldrizzle · 19/03/2018 18:17

Given that the 80 year old has been doing it all her life, it may be the reason she is still so flexible. I'm going to carry on doing It!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2018 18:23

I'm another, born without a left hip and hypermobility issues after coming out of plaster (with a hip having grown). I am now 52 and still find that the only comfortable floor sitting position.

The number of times teachers told me to sit properly... I used to enjoy the look on their faces when, having done as I was told, my hip slid out of place with an audible clunk!

Yes I have hip trouble, I am hypermobile and always have had! But hey, when you have to sit on the floor, you do what you have to do!

So maybe it isn't a problem, or a danger, or anything other than a cute enough for marketing picture of a kid wearing shoes!

windchimesabotage · 19/03/2018 18:33

YABU No one thinks model poses are actual poses you might use in real life. I mean who hunches over themselves and glares whilst just sitting on a chair? Who chills out by draping themselves over the mantelpiece and staring at the ceiling? Which people stand around using each other as arm rests and head rests?
I think its easy to get that people are just trying to make the clothing they are trying to sell, look good!

cutie101 · 19/03/2018 18:49

Absolutely agree not the greatest way to show a child to be sitting. If they want to show the shoes off how about child on back with legs in air or a shot of child from the back so you see back, legs and pretty shoes.

exaltedwombat · 19/03/2018 18:56

Indicating weakness in hips etc. is a different thing to causing weakness.

But I guess you're going for your Professional Diploma in Being Offended and this is a test? I'll give you a B+.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 19/03/2018 19:04

Wow I have learned so much from this thread. I sat like this pretty much all of my childhood and teen years. I would often choose to sit this way on the floor over sitting on a chair as it was more comfortable. I was and still am to a lesser extent ‘double jointed’ which I know usually = hypermobile.

My feet have always turned in slightly when I walk (I correct this now as an adult by wearing Chelsea boots as they force my foot straight).
Most of my teen years I would fall over from a standstill, no warning but it was like my ankles would just collapse and one minute I would be standing and the next I would be on the ground. I rarely have this issue now but on the odd occasions I do it usually correlates with low iron levels.

After reading this I’m now worried about my hips as I get older. I am stiff walking when wake up and hobble around for a good 10 minutes before my feet feel normal again.

So yes I think for a shoe company that prides itself on proper child foot development this isn’t the best choice of poster / pose. There are plenty of other poses to show off shoes. If this was a shop like next or Debenhams I could understand but Clark’s really should know better.

Shockers · 19/03/2018 19:07

I sat like that until I was in my 20s.

My hips and knees are fucked now (51). Sad

asneakysnickers · 19/03/2018 19:15

I've always sat in a similar way then suddenly at around 55 my hips and back are in big trouble - apparently because of this, so all you people out there - take heed!

lolalola19 · 19/03/2018 19:25

REALLY??? People way overthink the most ridiculous things on here!!

DollyLlama · 19/03/2018 19:36

I still sit like this now!

DollyLlama · 19/03/2018 19:37

I might add that I am knock kneed and have painful hips Blush

Mari50 · 19/03/2018 19:42

I still sit like this, always have, it’s so much more comfortable than any other way. My dd (9) finds it kind of gross and has asked me not to.

ShovingLeopard · 19/03/2018 20:06

Am amazed at some of the vitriol on here. Even if you fail to appreciate why the OP is concerned (though I would counsel against automatically dismissing somebody's opinions if they happen to be more qualified than you in the area in question - never a good idea), surely the fact that she is concerned about something that you are not does not warrant being so aggressive..Confused

BitOutOfPractice · 19/03/2018 20:12

@Elementtree that made me really laugh.

MrsRobert · 19/03/2018 20:46

It was natural for me to sit like this as a child because I'm hypermobile. I wouldn't allow my child though! I've rheumatoid arthritis since I was 7. It might be a coincidence but it probably didn't help my joints!

Whitecurrants · 19/03/2018 20:56

Just checked and I can do it. I suppose the OP is correct because I wouldn't have tried it otherwise. I'm just easily led.

witherwings · 19/03/2018 21:03

@Elementtree
If I buy that aftershave, will my husband start liking like kit Harrington (🤞)

witherwings · 19/03/2018 21:03

*looking not liking
