To be uncomfortable about the use of this image in Clark's?

This is a slightly weird one, so I'm prepared to get laughed at / flamed, but here goes...
The child in the attached image (at least I hope it's attached) is "W" sitting. Now where it's very good for showing off the shoes, it's also developmentally a really bad position for kids to sit in, and one that parents / guardians should be actively discouraging kids to use, unless it's just for a really short period of time. It can indicate weakness in the hips and trunk. Am I a little silly for thinking that they shouldn't have the child in this position in their advertising??
Disclaimer; am an AHP so I NOTICE these things!

But no one is going to look at that ad and think "Never mind the shoes, I must get Anna to start sitting like that" are they?

So it doesn't matter.

Witchend · 17/03/2018 15:06

If you come across someone who says "well it hadn't occurred to me that you might sit like that but since seeing the Clarks pictures I encourage my child to always sit like that" then you can be concerned.
Until then you're overthinking.

Faintlinesquints · 17/03/2018 15:09

I actually totally agree with you. Through my dd needing orthotics and physio throughout her life we are well aware at how bad this sitting position can be.
For a company who promote healthy feet it's a bit of an oversight but tbf the photographer probably just thought it was a good way to show the shoes.

witherwings · 17/03/2018 15:09

I sit like that all the time and always have. I’m in my 40’s and never had any problems.
And no, wouldn’t even occur to me what position she is seated in, I would be looking at the shoes (or more likely never notice the ad in the first place)

dementedma · 17/03/2018 15:11

ugly shoes and unhappy looking child wouldn't encourage me to buy them

olderthanyouthink · 17/03/2018 15:12

Huh... I used to sit like that when I was little all the time, so did my mum and brother...

Didn't know it was bad for you, I tried it the other day and still can do it.

SheldonandPenny · 17/03/2018 15:13

Ouch! That's all I see is ouch

wanderings · 17/03/2018 15:13

Should we be more worried about the child being apparently sockless? I thought that wasn't ideal. (Like others, missing the point). I too noticed the "sadness" before I saw the W sitting.

BuzzKillington · 17/03/2018 15:22

I sit like that on the floor at the ripe old age of 47. Never had a problem.

I'd be more put off by the fact the child appears to be crying over being forced to wear really nasty shoes.

PerfectlyDone · 17/03/2018 15:24

Overthinking.

I am a HCP and I know that position is not particularly good for hips etc, but in the real world many kids do sit like that and do not come to any harm.

I did when I was a child, I can still get in to that position (I am over 50 Grin) but obviously no longer find it comfortable, so don't as a rule, but it was my most comfortable position to sit on the floor in.

BuzzKillington · 17/03/2018 15:26

Ironically, my inflexible husband couldn't sit like that if you paid him, yet he is slightly pigeon-toed.

OutyMcOutface · 17/03/2018 15:26

Calm down. Have you seen the kinds of poses some adults strike? It’s not harmful to the child and actually quite normalchild behaviour. Even I can sit like that when requested and there is nothing wrong with my hips. It’s just an aesthetic choice made by the photographer. Calm your farm.

SoupDragon · 17/03/2018 15:38

LOL @ “Calm down”. The OP is very calm and rational, not frothing at all.

user1490607838 · 17/03/2018 15:45

@prideofaberdeen

You need to get out more.

Echobelly · 17/03/2018 15:47

Our kids W sit, my brother has always W-sat, I had a serious congenital hip defect (for which both kids were thoroughly tested when newborns) and I think W-sit mania is one of those things we managed without just fine with before people started going on about it!

dinosaursandtea · 17/03/2018 15:47

It’s the most comfortable position to sit in!

Sparklesocks · 17/03/2018 15:48

I think life’s too short for such battles...

choccyp1g · 17/03/2018 15:52

I used to sit like that until I was about 40.
Now at 60 I've got one full hip replacement and am waiting for the second.

Backscratchesforever · 17/03/2018 15:56

I’m more uncomfortable with the one eye pose

outabout · 17/03/2018 16:01

I could never sit like that and am now at a stage where getting up off the floor at all is a significant task.
Apart from that, the advert is pretty rubbish.

MissionItsPossible · 17/03/2018 16:02

She doesn't look happy. Is it because she was forced to wear ugly Clarks shoes?

Cliveybaby · 17/03/2018 16:02

Hmm I did that and now (late 20s) I have hypermobility, joint pain, a "weak core" and dislocating kneecaps...

Branleuse · 17/03/2018 16:02

I dont think it is going to encourage any children to sit in a W and cry tbh

oneplus2is3 · 17/03/2018 16:03

I agree with you OP, but I've got a child with CP and have spent the last 18 months trying to get them to not sit like this so am very aware of positioning.

If not for this I may not have noticed TBH.

Eolian · 17/03/2018 16:03

YABU because who on earth looks at a shoe advert and thinks "Hey - I must sit like that girl!" Presumably some kids sit luke that anyway and some don't. The advert will make zero difference to that.
