To wonder if you judge people who work in "crap" jobs, and if so why?

So, cleaners, dishwashers, fast food workers. Jobs seen as "dead end" and a bit shit. I have a job people think this about, and it often shows unfortunately (outside of work more than in it).
Aibu to ask, do you judge people who do this and what's the reasoning behind it?

laddylonglocks · 16/03/2018 15:39

Not at all, even the "crap" jobs are competitive to get now. Society needs all these services.

Thequeenisdeadboys · 16/03/2018 15:39

I imagine you would have to be awfully thick to land one of these jobs !
(only joking) Grin

Cunstancemarkiewicz · 16/03/2018 15:41

No, I've done all of these jobs in the past. I really really judge people who look down on those who do; what kind of arsehole does that Hmm

LoveInTokyo · 16/03/2018 15:41

I don’t judge people who work as cleaners, or flip burgers in McDonalds, or empty bins, or wash dishes, or wipe people’s bottoms, or give people parking tickets. (Yes, even traffic wardens are necessary and we should give them a break.)

If that’s what you mean by a crap job, then no, not at all.

I don’t judge sex workers either, although it makes me feel kind of sad.

But there are some jobs I do judge a bit. I’m thinking of people who get paid to call you up and ask if you’ve been in an accident that wasn’t your fault. People who get paid to call you up and trick you into giving away personal information, or who get paid to troll on the internet and influence the outcome of elections...those nefarious sorts of “jobs” which I just don’t think people should do.

I don’t like charity muggers either, but they’re not in the same league.

@newmumwithquestions

Because the threat of starvation and homelessness is quite persuasive. Why else do you think people work these "crap" jobs?

scortja · 16/03/2018 15:47

I don't judge - I've done those jobs and haven't really minded them..

One thing that used to annoy me - although I now realise they were being kind - was people that used to ask me what I was studying.. As though there was no way that I (white, young, cute, smart) would be doing that job otherwise..

YoloSwaggins · 16/03/2018 15:49

Nope, and I don't see how you could. Service jobs basically keep our society going!

JoJoSM2 · 16/03/2018 15:50

when do you feel judged OP? Having a unskilled, low paid job could be hindrance in the dating world for example. People might not judge but they don't disregard the fact completely.

lookingforaline18 · 16/03/2018 15:53

No not at all.

I would definitely judge people who are judging them though. I would think they are stuck up and horrible.

RoundOffFlickFlack · 16/03/2018 15:55

No, I have done all of those jobs in the past. When I was interviewing people for graduate positions, I thought it was great getting CVs from people who had worked in those kind of jobs during some stage of their career rather than those who had never done any paid work but had had a 'cv enhancing' jolly gap yah put on a plate for them.

Howdydoodyfolks · 16/03/2018 15:57

Yes I do. I judge them as being damn hard working people

PeterIanStaker · 16/03/2018 15:57

I don't judge, because I have a dead-end 'mum' job. Not everyone is in those jobs because they have no other option. Even if that is the limit of their work options, they're working, making a living - why on earth would anyone have a problem with that?

I'm well-educated and had a professional job before I had children. I now work part-time in a shoe shop and really love it. People judge me every day, treating me like an idiot and making unreasonable demands because they think they're above me. Fuck 'em; I've seen their bunions.

ButtertubsPass · 16/03/2018 15:57

No I don't and I don't think much of those that do.

I have a friend who is re-training in her 40s, she has one of these jobs, to help pay the bills, she is really capable - doesn't want anything other than washing up for three hours a day because she has got so much else going on.

I picked peas in a field in the summer and worked in M&S and a supermarket to help fund uni 30 odd years ago.

We are all people. We could all be there, life can be unpredictable.

RachelTeeth · 16/03/2018 16:01

⬅️This.
And what scortja said, people assuming my job is because I’m studying to work in some office. Nope. If people are really so shite at making unwanted conversation to hospitality staff, they need to just stick to the weather.

To wonder if you judge people who work in "crap" jobs, and if so why?
Certcert · 16/03/2018 16:01

Hilarious.

PoorYorick · 16/03/2018 16:02

Everyone will say no. A more telling question might be whether you'd date someone in such a job.

ReallyThough100 · 16/03/2018 16:03

JoJoSM2

Conversations with a few casual friends, of late. Not a dating setting at all though (I'm married!). I've been judged by others too though, friends of friends or strangers. I don't chat with the latter often but when trying to make friendly chatter and they ask what I do for a living I'll tell them and get a Hmm response. I've had everything from "you're too good to be doing that" to "wow, really. Why? Couldn't you get a job doing x? Or a degree?" All the way to sarcastic comments, raised eyebrows or a patronising attitude and assumptions from a variety of people. In the latter category I include someone saying my opinion on a certain subject (taxation) doesn't matter as "you earn. what? Xx thousand per year doing Y? Can't be paying much tax". I do pay a fair chunk by the way, but that's not the point. I wasn't about to disclose my (quite unimpressive) earnings to a stranger but I resent the implication that I can't have an opinion on something because I'm not paying as much tax as someone else is. It was just a general chat, too. Not specific to low or high earners. I recognise that's more to do with being poor than being in a job people view as shit, though.

Pinkvoid · 16/03/2018 16:03

Not at all. I worked part time in maaannnyyy shit jobs as a student so I completely get it. My Dbro works in mcdonalds while he’s studying at uni. Mum always raised us with the mantra ‘A job is a job’. Better to be earning than not.

RoundOffFlickFlack · 16/03/2018 16:04

I think there is a bit of a difference between judging someone and wanting to date them Confused

LaurieFairyCake · 16/03/2018 16:04

The best part of my day is talking to people who work in coffee shops, Pret where I get my lunch and the occasional chips in the Burger King at Charing Cross station.

All of these ‘fast food workers’ are polite and friendly and even chatty if you’re open to it (if there’s no queue).

People are on the whole LOVELY who are customer facing. I have the best chats with the guy from Puccinos at Blackheath station - he’s so chatty and smiley.

OutyMcOutface · 16/03/2018 16:06

Judge on what basis? What assumptions are people drawing?

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 16/03/2018 16:07

Nope, I have done those jobs when I was a student and would never judge anyone in those types of jobs. Maybe it is the only job they can get or maybe they do it because it fits in with other commitments. I admire them for getting off their backsides and working and frankly if there were not people doing these type of jobs we would all be stuffed. But, I DO judge the people who treat those workers as less than them or talk down to them - I have no respect for those type of people.

ReallyThough100 · 16/03/2018 16:08

OutyMcOutface

That people are thick, not hardworking, a bit shit. Not "actual people" with thoughts and feelings, don't have a "real job". Along those lines IME.

OP posts:
bakingdemon · 16/03/2018 16:08

Wouldn't dream of it - I've been a barmaid, supermarket checkout operator and shelf stacker and waitress. If anything, I think everyone should work in low paid service jobs for a time, even if they intend to follow a different profession. You will never dream of treating people in that position badly if you've been there yourself.
