To wonder if you judge people who work in "crap" jobs, and if so why?

So, cleaners, dishwashers, fast food workers. Jobs seen as "dead end" and a bit shit. I have a job people think this about, and it often shows unfortunately (outside of work more than in it).
Aibu to ask, do you judge people who do this and what's the reasoning behind it?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/03/2018 18:56

I am not sure I could date a man that works as a cleaner. I don't think I could be attracted to him even if he was a sex God.

Notapushymum1 Why? Confused

GummyGoddess You may have found those types of jobs shit, but that’s not universal across the board; not everyone dislikes them.

Birdsgottafly · 16/03/2018 19:01

"I do judge non working people or those that do the magic number of hours (usually sixteen) and let others keep them instead of doing more."

See that doesn't make sense when our Society is set up to have a level of unemployment. We need a number of people to be content to be out of work.

I don't blame anyone who sticks to the 16 hours, or enough to get TC. Working in low paid jobs means that a good enough level of savings is unlikely and if time off sick, or a sudden redundancy etc happens, it means they are using food banks/threatened with eviction. Everyone who is getting made redundant from all of the retailers going bust this year and has three children, won't get benefit for all of them, which is a disgrace.

KochabRising · 16/03/2018 19:01

Hell no. Why on earth would I? A job is a job. If it’s moral and legal I’m not judging.

I’ve done plenty of these jobs as a student and young person. They’re hard work.

A lot of them are absolutely necessary to society and criminally underpaid - care workers for example. The care workers I’ve encountered who allowed my gran to stay in her own home until she died in her mid nineties were saints - it’s a really physically hard job and they were paid peanuts.
Cleaners are vital, the bin men are vital.

I judge companies who pay sub living wages though.

Anyone who judges retail workers/cleaners/carers etc is an arse.

HolyGoats · 16/03/2018 19:05

I work as a care assistant 2 days a week. My DGM is a patient I’m the nursing home I work at and I enjoy seeing her and I do actually enjoy the work too. I have a professional qualification and my dh earns a 6 figure salary but this job suits me and my family.

Th only people that seem to judge me are some of dh’s colleagues who seem to think I do it as some kind of virtue signalling.

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 16/03/2018 19:05

Of course not. I did similar jobs when I was younger and they are bloody hard work.

plominoagain · 16/03/2018 19:06

I used to have a male cleaner , he was bloody marvellous . And very very sought after too , he had a waiting list and picked and chose his clients , and we only got in because we came with a recommendation from his best mate . And he did ironing too . He earned an absolute fortune , owned his house outright , and had at least two nice holidays a year . He was great .

My DH did a very very high level responsible ( life or death decision making ) type job for 30 years . He retired having done his 30 , absolutely wrung out with stress and aggravation . But I couldn’t have him at home all the time as he was bored stiff after 6 months and starting to alphabetise the spice jars , so he went out and got a job . Now he delivers fruit and veg for a wholesale caterers , for not much above nmw and he absolutely loves his job . I know his round as well as he does as he has to tell me all about it and he’s so enthusiastic . A far cry from his ‘proper job’ , when enquiries about his day would elicit a grunt , and ‘no comment ‘ . People who knew him before and after think he looks 20 years younger . So no, I don’t judge at all .

acquiesce · 16/03/2018 19:07

whattodo sorry for thread hijack but monopoly next week??? Aaaargh!!

ALittleAubergine · 16/03/2018 19:10

I don't judge people in any job. Except maybe people who stick to a job they clearly hate and that makes them ill, even if they had a choice to leave or change jobs. I understand not everybody has that choice but some do and stay on regardless.

causeimunderyourspell · 16/03/2018 19:11

I don't judge. I used to work in a shop and it was hard work, v stressful and absolutely crap pay. I got spoken to like I was thick as mince and I would never ever treat someone doing their job, like that.

I would say I feel annoyed on their behalf though, as I know how rubbish the pay for these types of jobs is for the stress, long hours and hard work involved.

LoveInTokyo · 16/03/2018 19:11

What is Monopoly (in the context of working at McDonalds)?

You know I was just thinking about why WhatToDo’s posts were so nice to read and I think it’s because she’s literally doing the original “McJob”. (An awful, sneery expression.) So it’s actually really interesting to hear from someone who actually works for McDonalds and enjoys it and thinks they’re a great company to work for. Just goes to show that these judgemental people who come up with these expressions don’t actually know what they’re talking about.

ohlittlepea · 16/03/2018 19:14

No, I've done some of these types of jobs, it wouldn't make me think any less of someone. It's not like you trade arms or something.

parklives · 16/03/2018 19:16

I wouldn't judge.
I currently have a couple of different jobs....one is, I'm sure, considered menial and the other glamorous and prestigious....the menial job pays sooooo much better than the other, and a lot of the time I enjoy it much more too.
I always love to see people who take pride in what they do, and try to do as well as they can, no matter the size of their pay check.

Viviennemary · 16/03/2018 19:17

No I wouldn't judge these people. I'd admire them. I'd judge workshy people and malingerers.

parklives · 16/03/2018 19:17

I would judge someone if they said they were a daily fail journo!

sinceyouask · 16/03/2018 19:18

Of course not, I'm not a cunt.

KochabRising · 16/03/2018 19:18

"I do judge non working people or those that do the magic number of hours (usually sixteen) and let others keep them instead of doing more."

What we should be judging is the system that thinks it’s OK for big companies to pay such low wages that the taxpayer has to top them up. That’s a direct subsidisation of private companies from public money. That should ONLY ever happen if the company is doing a public service (and even then it shouldn’t happen on frontline wages.) no private profit making comp at should be operating if it can’t pay its workers a living wage.

We should be judging the successive governments who have decided to asset strip the country, pour public tax pounds into private pockets. We should be judging companies who pay these shit wages - often massive companies with massive profits.

GummyGoddess · 16/03/2018 19:20

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue I know that isn't everyone's experience, there are some call centre people at work who love their jobs, I just hated it. I don't like jobs dealing with members of the public so I don't think I'm very well suited and struggle with them. I get very teary when I'm shouted at or told I'm a stupid whatever.

If I had to do them again then I would but only after exhausting every other avenue. I think cleaning was the least shit for me because it had the lowest level of interaction with non colleagues.

Nevercallmehun · 16/03/2018 19:20

Absolutely Kochab, with bells on!

Hahanotfunnymylifeisamess · 16/03/2018 19:20

I used to work as a sales assistant and some people definitely judged. It was when I was younger and still going out to bars and I remember a few men who tried chatting me up would get weird about it. (I worked near the city of London so most of these men were well paid. Maybe they thought I was out to snag a rich man or something).

northbynorthwesty · 16/03/2018 19:20

no. I’m not a snob

ememem84 · 16/03/2018 19:21

No. I judge people who think the people who do these jobs are beneath them.

My boss is one. Speaks to waiting staff like they are morons. Never says thank you. I always make sure if I eat out with him I leave the tip, and I say thank you. I’ve done waiting tables. It’s probably the toughest job I’ve done.

Hahanotfunnymylifeisamess · 16/03/2018 19:21

Sorry...I worked near and so went out to bars in the city.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/03/2018 19:30

acquiesce Yup, starts next Wednesday 21st March Smile

What is Monopoly (in the context of working at McDonalds)?

LoveInTokyo On some of our products you get stickers, and those stickers give you a chance to win anything from free instant food prizes like a cheeseburger or an extra value meal to a car or a holiday.

There are a few different ways to win, from instant wins to playing online, but my favourite is the game board. You have a mini-board, collect property sets just like in the actual game of Monopoly and once you have a set you’re a winner Smile

Employees can’t play in the public Monopoly as it wouldn’t be fair, but McDonalds does run a private Monopoly just for us so we still have a chance to win prizes like holidays and game consoles etc. Smile

It is the biggest event in our calendar and this year we’re giving away even more prizes than ever before so it will be a very manic few weeks!

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 16/03/2018 19:33

GummyGoddess Yes, that’s fair enough; dealing with the public can be very difficult and it’s not for everyone.

GummyGoddess · 16/03/2018 19:35

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue definitely difficult, they are not paid enough.
