To wonder if you judge people who work in "crap" jobs, and if so why?

So, cleaners, dishwashers, fast food workers. Jobs seen as "dead end" and a bit shit. I have a job people think this about, and it often shows unfortunately (outside of work more than in it).
Aibu to ask, do you judge people who do this and what's the reasoning behind it?

I've come to realise anyone who wants to know what your job is early on in a conversation is pretty shallow.*

When I ask people what they do, it is usually out of genuine interest. I spend 40 hours a week at work, I am lucky enough to find it stimulating, and it is part of my identity, and my question would reflect that.

Kinzi73 · 23/03/2018 21:26

I sell sofas for a living and find it hilarious when people look down their nose at me because I just "work in a shop". I find it even funnier when taking their details for finance options and their salary is almost half what I earn. Yes I am very lucky to be paid such a good salary for sitting on sofas chatting to people and I don't care what the snobs think 😂😂😂

hazell42 · 23/03/2018 21:33

I had a job in McDonalds years ago. Frankly I thought it was beneath me because I had a degree.
Until I realised that almost everyone one there either had a degree or was working towards one.
Taught me not to be a godalmighty snob
Anyone who gets their arse out of bed in the morning and goes to work gets my respect. And the shittier the job, the greater the respect. My son works 70 hours a week, outside in all weathers doing manual labour in filthy conditions. I wouldn't do it. Because I'm just not hard working enough.
Kudos to him and everyone else who does it

DaisyFlower161 · 23/03/2018 21:33

I don't judge people who do "crap" jobs but I do judge people for being crap at their job, no matter what the job is simply because they can't be bothered! I think you do your best at your job and take pride in what you do because it is so soul destroying otherwise.

Prussiablue · 23/03/2018 21:36

Very bizarre thread. Why even judg? We're all cogs in a wheel.

hazeydays14 · 23/03/2018 21:37

Plenty of people judge, few would admit it though!

Overheard a vile TOWIE wannabe discussing a lady at Costa who got her order wrong and she actually said to the woman ‘how hard is it to get a drink right, are you stupid? This is why you work at Costa’. So glad her friend pointed out they could well be studying and working there part time so no one else had to. I’m just shocked she so openly discussed how rude she was on a busy train, they had been on the ‘seccy’ as they called it Grin

I am in awe of our cleaner at work sometimes. She cleans for 2 other businesses in the morning and does home cleans in the day too before coming to us in the evening, I wonder how she has any time to eat sometimes. I think her day starts at 5am and finishes past 10pm some days! I struggle when I’ve got to be in for 7 Blush

Justletitlie · 23/03/2018 21:43

stillMedusa are you a traffic warden? Dentist?

StillMedusa · 23/03/2018 22:00

Traffic Warden Grin.... pays quite a lot better than being a specialist carer .. seems daft as in my job I was doing complex care, medications, gastro feeding, suction etc...yet paid sod all.

I'm now in training as a hated TW...and barring the odd abusive person, it's quite civilised...more like being a walking tourist guide... we are pretty lenient, but woe betide if you park in a Blue Badge space illegally Grin The team are nice, and once it's not so cold I think I will enjoy it!

NeverTwerkNaked · 23/03/2018 22:08

still TW is one of those weird jobs, everyone hates it if they get caught but they would hate it a lot more if there was a parking free for all.
You should t feel at all apologetic about doing it!

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 23/03/2018 22:46

I am often judged due to my work. I am a professional with post grad qualifications, earn good money etc. But my profession is routinely ridiculed. Just watching a film where it's targeted yet again.

user1476641978 · 23/03/2018 22:53

NO. Never, ever. I have what some might consider a ‘good’ job but am working class to the core and I never forget where I came from and what I am. I’m proud of all of my working class family who were (mostly deceased now sadly) the biggest bunch of grafters. I often feel out of place in my ‘good’ job because I’m surrounded by a load of middle class snots with the most embarrassing attitude to anyone with less money or power than them. Pathetic. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad for whatever job you do - hard graft and earning an honest days wage to pay your bills is what is important. Not your job title.

Mumto2two · 23/03/2018 23:03

Absolutely not, but unfortunately many people do. My daughter works p/t in a supermarket, in a very well heeled town. And she is often shocked at how rude & disparaging people can be..which usually changes when they realise she is also doing A levels, and only works part time.

evilharpy · 23/03/2018 23:10

God no. In fact I'm a bit jealous of my friend's cleaning job as it sounds lovely.

I am however very judgmental of those who behave shittily towards people in the service industry. If you're rude to waiters or baristas then I probably don't want to know you.

ilovesouthlondon · 23/03/2018 23:10

I always respect cleaners (I've been one myself and was treated like dirt) because my father taught me that the cleaner is just as important as the doctor. He told me that during the winter of discontent, the cleaners refused to work and rubbish piled up with vermin and disease. He said people got sick not just physically but mentally because of all the rubbish. So he always taught me that a good cleaner can prevent your need for a doctor. I have respect for cleaners and see the contribution that they make to our well-being.

evilharpy · 23/03/2018 23:14

Isn’t it the middle class greeting? And what do you DO? so I can make my judgement on you nice and quick and move on to someone better if your occupation doesn’t meet my standards. Twats!

I'm always interested in what people's jobs are, purely because I like people and am interested in people I get chatting to and like finding out about what they do. I'd be mortified if anyone thought I was asking about their job for snobbish reasons :(

msdoolally · 23/03/2018 23:42

PoorYorick - exactly.
Most people if being perfectly honest wouldn't date someone in the jobs op is talking about. I don't judge people in 'crap' jobs but I don't think I'd date someone. I find drive and ambition attractive so it would put me off. Being honest.

Eminado · 23/03/2018 23:42

@ClaireFoy expressed it best for me:

“It would be a mistake to make assumptions about the way they live and their quality of life.”

pollymere · 23/03/2018 23:45

I wouldn't judge someone on their job, just how good they were at it. My dh recent Big Mac had the formation bun, bun, cheese, burger, cheese, burger, bun. No salad or sauce. And do re-read before you start judging me!

AdoraBell · 23/03/2018 23:54

Haven’t RTFT, but having had factory jobs and been “just a checkout girl” no, I don’t judge.

Flowersandbirds · 24/03/2018 00:27

Do you know what really pisses me off? People in “non crap jobs” - accountant, lawyers, bankers, CEOs saying “I’ve work really hard to get where I am and my job is very stressful”. Sure it is but do they work harder than a carer or a cleaner? Nope Is their job more stressful than struggling to pay bills and giving your kids what they need? Nope. It’s this kind of pretending those in crap jobs aren’t working hard that REALLY pisses me off.

Custardo · 24/03/2018 00:31

those people who judge are cunts. how dare you begin to know somesones crcumstance fuck you

mummypeepee · 24/03/2018 00:40

I get judged for being a waitress. People assume I’m stupid and can’t do other work. Well thanks I’m highly educated, I have worked more demanding responsible jobs. I work around my husbands hours when kids are in bed so less Mum guilt, zero childcare costs and I earn a lot of money. More than I did teaching anyways.

hellokittymania · 24/03/2018 00:45

No, not at all. You never know what somebody else's life is like.

GameChanger01 · 24/03/2018 02:54

Yes people do I have worked in caring, cleaning, temp jobs, call centre during my younger days of study. The worst was in an office being looked down on by "office workers"..,, little did they know I would go on to become an Eye Surgeon.

CosyLulu · 24/03/2018 06:35

My cousin was a ‘glamour model’ and on Page 3 at least a couple of times when it still had topless pictures. She got massively judged and literally blanked by some family and friends. She’s a midwife now.
