To wonder if you judge people who work in "crap" jobs, and if so why?

So, cleaners, dishwashers, fast food workers. Jobs seen as "dead end" and a bit shit. I have a job people think this about, and it often shows unfortunately (outside of work more than in it).
Aibu to ask, do you judge people who do this and what's the reasoning behind it?

Nope. I've got twenty years training and experience in my sector but since having children (3 yrs and 1 yr) I've taken a break and taken up cleaning for a bit. I was tired of bringing Work home and being stressed so put my family first for a bit. It's not as much money obviously and people do raise their eyebrows but I'd rather have a calm happy mind and leave work at work

Quite a few unhappy mcdonalds workers in the student room....

I admit I was wrong about the union issue..Yes it does say that in the handbook, just Google but theyre manager is saying even so it could make life awkward for them if they did..bit of a threat there.

A lot of issues in mcdonalds seem to be scheduling issues, people being put on breaks when they start thier shift this is also against handbook rules but it still happens, being treated as a no show when they phone in sick with norovirus and the message wasn't passed on. Not having a break in an 8 hour shift, also happened to ds.

I appreciate not every maccies is the same but then not every worker has the same wonderful experience as you. Never ever would I work for mcdonalds, been totally put off tbh. I am entitled to my opinion just as you are entitled to yours

Actually I find on MN that the judging is the other way around - towards people with professional jobs who invest a lot of time and attention to their job.

It really depends on the context and how the OP is framed. Though that's the case for a lot of other topics too.

For some reason I totally judged myself when I had on of these jobs: as a till operator at a big supermarket. I really don’t know why, since I desperately needed the cash and was earning it, and not on benefits etc, which would be even worse for me.

I am ashamed to say that I felt thoroughly ashamed and almost suicidal. I looked fat and disgusting in the outfit, felt so self conscious and exposed on the till, and some customers were rude, just chucking their money and loyalty cards at you, barking orders. I kept slipping into our chats that I was thinking about doing another degree, even though I wasn’t!

I am a qualified teacher etc, but due to mh issues, can’t do it. After fuck8ng up many job ops- some great jobs with a future and some that are more temp and or lower paid, I am currently working as an oap day Centre Worker- Care, beauty for oaps etc, and I am so happy. I am working, earning an ok salary for the hours, the people are lovely, and I am appreciated.

I wouldn’t (and couldn’t) go back to teaching or finance, my first career.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 18/03/2018 16:55

blackheartsgirl Right, but those aren’t McDonads company issues, they’re specific issues with one particular store due to a poor business and scheduling manager.

You keep mentioning new things, but none of them are standard across McDonalds. I have worked in multiple stores, have colleagues who have also worked in multiple stores, and these issues have never arisen.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, yes, but yours is based solely on second hand stories, whereas mine is personal, I’ve lived it, and in more than one store.

bsbabas · 23/03/2018 17:37

Anyone who is willing to work and do their bit gets a medal from me. Why would you judge someone like that and don't you have anything better to talk about

Nimmykins · 23/03/2018 17:38

Personally I think cleaners and refuse workers etc do the most important jobs.

badlydrawncat · 23/03/2018 17:41

I ran my own successful business for 23 years. I now do a 'crap' job. I do it because I like to work, I like it, it's ethical and it's infinitely flexible so I can take as much time as I want to travel.

supersop60 · 23/03/2018 17:45

No - the world needs cleaners, dishwashers, bin men (bin people?) They are essential to the smooth running of other people's lives. They should be paid shedloads more than they are currently.

Petrify · 23/03/2018 17:45

No I don't. All these jobs are important and need to be done . I HATE snobs anyway x

Cabininthewoods69 · 23/03/2018 17:47

I judge people who don't put any effort into there work.

Shell4429 · 23/03/2018 17:57

I iron clothes at home in front of the telly. Most customers deliver their ironing to me and pick it up, so I hardly have to leave the house. I work from home because I have a son who has ASD. Oh, and I have a law degree. None of my customers know that but they’re all lovely to me.

user1483875094 · 23/03/2018 17:59

No.

I would judge people who judge them though. Harshly!

THIS. Perfectly succint, and exactly what I would do! xx

GerardButlersBird · 23/03/2018 18:02

I work in the care profession alongside carers who are doing one of the most important jobs in the world but perhaps because it (initially) requires no qualifications and is often paid at the minimum, or living wage, is frequently judged as being a “crap” job that people do because they can’t get “anything better”. This is an attitude I come up against a great many times from those who know no better. Sometimes our carers themselves don’t know their own worth but I never miss an opportunity to tell them that done well, with the dignity and respect of the person receiving the care in mind, it literally is one of the most important roles they’ll ever play. We all need care at some point in our lives. One in seven of us is, or will become, disabled. Many of us will become old and vulnerable. A good carer has the ability to changes a person’s day; week, life. And yet I hear them dismissed as “just arse-wipers’.

I don’t judge people by their jobs no. Except perhaps when they are a sleazy politician

Mmmmmmmchips · 23/03/2018 18:09

I don’t but I don’t think you will get many posters here admitting to it though

Angel2702 · 23/03/2018 18:12

No. I do cleaning as I needed something g to fit around two children that have lots of appointments. I work a few ours a week to suit me and with everything gcelse to deal with don’t want a job that is stressful. It suits us perfectly.

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 23/03/2018 18:12

I've done loads of those jobs, including scrubbing toilets. However, there are definitely some people I judge for doing them depending on their situation. Like my mate's husband who does it because he finds it dead easy, then expects her to fund everything from the job she worked years to get. Lazy fucker.

Glittered · 23/03/2018 18:12

I only judge people who can't be bothered to work and just claim benefits
I understand some people have no choice but there are some who think it's their right not to work.
My job could be viewed as crap with everything we have to put up with
I'm an a&e nurse.
I don't personally judge people on their job

Nousernamefound · 23/03/2018 18:20

I don’t believe everyone that says no. 😂

PurpleNailVarnish · 23/03/2018 18:21

Never.

When I was a student I did 'crap' jobs, I loved most of them, even when people were rude to me.

One of my friends has a son with SN who is thrilled to go to work in his 'crap' job every day. His attitude is heartwarming to see and reminds me that so much of our society is based on status.

A former colleague of mine had enough of the stress and pressure of her job. Eventually she went to work in a 'crap' job and is so much happier. I can only admire her decision.

Who am I to say that a job is 'crap'? A job is a job. If it makes someone happy and they can earn a living then why not?

Fuckitletshavevino · 23/03/2018 18:25

I don’t judge, I’ve done those jobs. I think the people that do judge don’t realise that without these jobs existing would mean everywhere being filthy, having to cook every night etc. Without those jobs no one would be “top”. If it wasn’t for those jobs the world wouldn’t survive

MissPiggysKarateChop · 23/03/2018 18:27

I don’t believe everyone that says no.

I think that probably says quite a lot about you.
