AIBU to think some people should just grow up

Details changed and I’ve name changed to stop it being identifiable.

AIBU to think some people just need to grow up and get on with it at work?

I work in a busy fast paced environment. It’s a big office with two distinct areas. On one side are the sales people this is high stress and loud, on the other side is the support staff area which is much gentler. The support staff are mainly older women, the sales staff are a mixed bunch.

The sales side is very robust, lots of swearing and mickey taking. Some days people let off steam by shouting we all just laugh and get on with it, no one takes offence. When someone shouts we laugh at them then they laugh and the tension breaks. We need this release sometimes.

Anyway, one of the support ladies lady S was doing a job at the sales end of the office colleague A put the phone down and started to shout. Lady S asked a question of colleague A and colleague A shouted. She didn’t shout at lady S - she was just shouty iyswim.

Lady S has put in a formal complaint saying she has been bullied and colleague A was unprofessional. Colleague A often behaves like this it’s her passion that makes her good at her job.

If all the sales staff behaved in the quiet demure way the support staff do no sales would get made! But the whole support area is up in arms about poor lady S.

TBH I think lady S is a bit of a wuss but I am wondering if I am too harsh. Colleague A is really valuable to the business, lady S is easily replaceable.

You're behaving like pricks. I don't care how much you sell.

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 20:58

o frigging funny and condescending! How can anyone here not have a clue?

just reading the post being shocked at the idea that a sales team could be: loud/ disrespectful/ politically incorrect and possibly quite sweary. You might not agree with it, but how can you say it's not a professional environment and it's a not true?

I have seen a guy throwing his computer on the floor in a rage once! No, of course no one had a word with him, he just got a new machine and kept making money. If you can't take that kind of environment, work somewhere else, but don't pretend it doesn't happen.

ithinksheisawuss · 15/03/2018 20:58

Cold callers are scumbags

Well it's a good job that's not what we do.

But if anyone out there is a cold caller I know it is a difficult job.

cucaracha

You sound hugely arrogant - "admin people welcome to try" ffs.

Double glazing is it?

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 21:00

I don't care how much you sell why should you care Pengggwn, you are not the one making money out of it Grin

Chienrouge · 15/03/2018 21:00

That’s exactly the point cucaracha. We can know that it exists in some sectors, but still think it’s pathetic.

Pengggwn · 15/03/2018 21:01

cucaracha

You have missed my point, haven't you?

ithinksheisawuss · 15/03/2018 21:03

@EduCated that just made me laugh out loud Grin

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 21:04

Not really Pengggwn, I don't think any sales person really gives a monkey what you think. You are entitled to your opinion, but it doesn't matter, does it. In the same way, you don't care either about what I think, and why should you.

Bonuses are due to be paid this month or the next, I can fairly safely guarantee that it's the only thing most people do care about right now, even more than their commission!

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 15/03/2018 21:05

Oh my fucking god. Between the op and @cucaracha, this thread is making sales look piss-your-pants funny. You saw someone throw their computer on the ground and then “he got a new machine and kept making money”? Bahahahahaha Grin!

I stand by my initial statement that this sounds like shit, nineties sitcom material. Or hang on, is this where they find all the candidates for The Apprentice?

Pengggwn · 15/03/2018 21:06

cucaracha

Again, point missed. I am not saying you care, I am saying you don't appear to understand what am I saying. Subtly different.

Not many people would agree with you that your bonus is the only thing that matters. You still have to behave towards others with professionalism. If you can't do that, they are right to complain.

fuzzyduck33 · 15/03/2018 21:09

Well the sales team do sound awful and immature yes, but you seem to like then Hmm

I hope Lady S finds a job with people who don't think it's funny to treat others like shit.

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 21:11

is this where they find all the candidates for The Apprentice?
I love it when people picture RL based on tv programs they've seen Grin

I did prefer the US version of the Office to the UK one

g1itterati · 15/03/2018 21:12

My DH used to work in gold options trading for a Suisse bank and there were some right w***s there, make no mistake, but none of them would ever have shouted at a female member of staff or thrown a computer on the floor Grin. If you shout and flap or abuse other people you just look like an inept tosser.

You still haven't said exactly what A "shouted" that has warranted a bullying complaint?

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 21:15

You still have to behave towards others with professionalism.

the point you are missing in that many places the only expectations is for people to make money. That is what "professionalism" means for some companies.

PerpendicularVincent · 15/03/2018 21:16

OP's Colleague: I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO MAKE A SALE BUT NOW I HAVE TO WAIT. THIS STATE OF AFFAIRS IS UNSATISFACTORY.

OP: HA HA HA HA

Colleague: HA HA HA HA

I still don't get it

MotherOfWurzel · 15/03/2018 21:17

Yep, because throwing a computer on the floor is totally normal behaviour. And sales is the only job that is adrenaline fuelled and sweary.

No wonder the NHS is skint if all those surgeons are trashing the place everytime they remove a tumour.

But hey, they just get some new surgeon stuff and keep on savin' lives.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 15/03/2018 21:18

Hmm Ive dealt with sales staff like yours. During olympics I couldn't hear over the racket. I hung up. They called back and I said unless I could actually hear them they wouldn't get my business and I'd email the ceo. Amazingly I got a quiet professional call back.
Entitled spoils brats who think because they make money they can act like they are still at school.(but are actually very replaceable)

beelzibub · 15/03/2018 21:18

Nice that you think she's on here, and you started a thread here to, what, get her told off?

I hope she's reading the replies and seeing that she wouldn't be alone in thinking your little smug gang were awful.

And as for bloke throwing his computer on the floor then 'carrying on making money' Grin

RoomOfRequirement · 15/03/2018 21:22

If your attitude on here is indicative of what goes on, I see exactly why she complained Hmm

If I go into work (NHS) and shout at a nurse, is that ok because she can't do my job? Wtf arrogance.
