To think my DH has lost the plot?

MrsRedPants · 14/03/2018 21:19

DH and I were discussing whether to put a load of laundry on tonight. He had wanted to, but I said that if he has enough clean clothes for tomorrow I didn't mind putting a wash on in the morning.

He said that he could wait, but that he didn't really want to wear his red boxers into work. He only likes to wear his red boxers at home.

I asked him why he doesn't want to wear his red boxers to work.

He said: "Because I don't want people to think, 'oooooh get him - who does he think he is to be wearing red pants!'"

After establishing that he wasn't just pulling my leg, I questioned him further. I pointed out that it's quite unlikely anyone will see his pants unless he's bending over a lot - and even if he is all they'll see is a sliver of his red boxers ONLY IF his t-shirt has ridden up. AND why would anyone have any opinions about his red pants at all?

He replied: "I think red pants at work are a really drastic statement. I don't want people to think I think I'm really cool or fancy, or that I have the looks to wear red pants."

My DH works as a software architect and is otherwise quite a sensible man. I asked him if he could find the courage to wear his red pants to work tomorrow. He thought about it for a while, sighed, and said yes.

AIBU to think this is an extremely weird worry to have, and that my DH has lost the plot?

@squiggleirl he usually just wears conference t-shirts - although I'm considering getting him a 'tnetennba' shirt because I know he'd love that! Grin

He's told me that he used to match his socks and pants, but that he's no longer 'a slave to fashion!' and is forging his own way with the pants-socks combo.

I did get his permission to post that photo, but he has just pointed out to me that this all started because he was worried about wearing his red pants - and now they're on the Internet! Grin

Tell him to wear a belt.

MillieMoodle · 14/03/2018 22:05

Aw, he sounds lovely, red pants and all!

Yumyumpigs · 14/03/2018 22:07

Awwww bless he thinks red pants are punching above his weight! He must have been beside himself to get a girlfriend.

kelper · 14/03/2018 22:07

I've got red pants, I do sometimes feel a little risqué wearing them, although no-one knows I'm wearing them (I'm also female so this may be different!)
DH has pink and green striped boxers that I have been eyeing up for a while......

The Red Pants' Significance sounds like one of those things you read in a magazine when you're at an impressionable young age and you just can't shake.

PyongyangKipperbang · 14/03/2018 22:10

The Red Pants' Significance

Sounds like a Big Bang Theory episode!

Cleanermaidcook · 14/03/2018 22:10

I'm with your dh. I will only wear black knickers to work.
Socks though - a different matter, orange today, i know how to live! 😂

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 14/03/2018 22:13

I had red pants, of a most pleasing crimson, but they were destroyed in The Incident Of Which We Do Not Speak. I must get some more.

squiggleirl · 14/03/2018 22:17

@squiggleirl he usually just wears conference t-shirts - although I'm considering getting him a 'tnetennba' shirt because I know he'd love that!

DH has a collection of nerd/Sheldon t-shirts, all of which get worn under shirts in work. He just admitted there is 1 t-shirt which he loves, but he never wears in work, as whilst he knows some of his colleagues would like it, it may be too much nerdiness for some of them. I pointed out he'd be wearing a shirt over it, but apparently no, it's mere presence in the building might be just too nerdy for some, and lose him some credibility. Bless his little cotton -Christmas- socks - he's a software architect in his mid 40s who thinks he has some level of 'cool' Grin

Trialsmum · 14/03/2018 22:17

Oh bless him. Wear those red underpants with pride MrRedPants!

Treaclepie19 · 14/03/2018 22:21

Aww! I had to send this to my - also in IT - husband because it's something he'd do.
I'm also now browsing for a tnettenba t-shirt.

MillieMoodle · 14/03/2018 22:23

Disgrace, you can't mention The Incident Of Which We Do Not Speak and then not tell us what happened, that's just not fair! So go on, spill Grin

ballerini · 14/03/2018 22:23

If I noticed a colleague wearing those I'd wonder who he thought he was and think he must think he is cool enough to wear red pants! Outside of work I'd think nothing of it! Lol
I hope he gets a few extra black pairs this Christmas!

OP I've just read your post to my dh and said this sounds like something he would say (thinking about insisting on always wearing a belt, even though there is no need - he feels naked without). I had no idea though that he shares your dh's precise view on pant colour for work. He has black trunks a few pairs of which have a red or purple waistband, others just black. He said have you never noticed I only wear plain colours on a Weds and Thursday (the days he has to change at work as part of his job). He feels pants with colour are for home - he doesn't want colleagues thinking that he thinks he's cool. Wtf?

Pfftkids · 14/03/2018 22:29

Your husband sounds adorable. Hope he wears his red pants with pride tomorrow

MrsRedPants · 14/03/2018 22:32

From everyone's replies I have gleaned that I AIBU for thinking my DH is a bit mad - but he's a bit mad in a good way so that's alright Grin

I have also learned that there is a whole swathe of people with a pants hierarchy. You really do never stop learning!

DH feels buoyed by your messages, and thanks the mumsnet community for your support. Tomorrow is the beginning of a new red-pants-at-work era for him!

I'm an enterprise architect, who works in IT (similar to software architect). I personally wouldn't wear red pants, and for me I save my striped boxers for the weekend - black or navy pants during the week - colour to match trousers that I'm wearing.

Your husband sounds perfectly reasonable and sensible, and is an honour to the profession

timeisnotaline · 14/03/2018 22:37

This is adorable. You have to buy him new red pants for his birthday.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 14/03/2018 22:42

Millie: We Do Not Speak Of It. However, try living on very rich food for four days, and then pull into Scotch Corner at lunchtime on December 27th. There was a mighty struggle, in which the enemy within was almost, but not quite, completely defeated.

crashbangwhallop · 14/03/2018 22:43

Please buy you DH some fancy pants and build up his confidence so he can go into work with a very stylish butt.

Do discourage him from flashing his pants at work. Whatever he looks like and no matter how fancy his pants, this will be frowned upon.

Aquamarine1029 · 14/03/2018 22:45

I think we need to see a pic of your husband in his red boxers in order to provide an educated opinion. Grin
