After 3 free speech advocates American Brittany Pettibone, her Austrian boyfriend and Canadian journalist Lauren Southern are detained by UK border force, barred from speaking at Speakers Corner, deported or barred entry.

We don't have freedom of speech on MN. Some topics are shut down and deleted instantly.

Why are some topics shut down and deleted and others aren't?

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 21:16

It's a business.

DullAndOld · 14/03/2018 21:16

" Why are some topics shut down and deleted and others aren't? "

fear of litigation I suppose.

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:18

No, it isn’t different. Why should me and my family, who are multiracial, have to live in fear of racists?

My family is also multiracial. I am a black american and DP is a white european.

if you want to limit other people's speech because of fear of violence, then that threat needs to be credible. that's why I asked if any of the people banned endorsed violence.

BlessYourCottonSocks · 14/03/2018 21:18

Free speech isn't dead. It never existed in the UK.

Too much American tv gives people the mistaken idea that they have 'the right to say what they like..'

They don't.

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:20

Free speech isn't dead. It never existed in the UK.

that's a sad thing for a country often credited with the birth of liberalism.

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2018 21:20

Far left hatred I suppose is suppression of people who disagree with certain views in the way Stalin did in his death camps. Hitler's left wing equivalent.

So is it okay to let the far right whip up a frenzy that culminates in a brown person being killed? Or brown kids bullied in the playground? Or brown people being discriminated against at work.

That’s where this leads. No one starts with camps...

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 21:21

It's not US TV in my case.

It was growing up every miserable sod with an unpopular opinion would tag it with

" It's a free country isn't it!"

PonderWhy · 14/03/2018 21:21

I don’t care if they get publicity due to being banned. The ban is still sending an important message. It sends a message that vile repugnant racist individuals are not welcome here. Let’s face it, these creatures would love apartheid still exist. They have just shifted their focus ever so slightly where brown is the new black.

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 21:21

I don't hear that line any more!

VioletteValentia · 14/03/2018 21:22

Ponder 👍🏼

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 21:23

It gives them free publicity too.

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 21:24

Sorry you said that I just picked up the end. It's time for bed..

gussyfinknottle · 14/03/2018 21:28

Freedom of expression is not absolute. Just like your right to privacy is not absolute.
We are free to debate where lines are drawn on these.

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:30

So is it okay to let the far right whip up a frenzy that culminates in a brown person being killed? Or brown kids bullied in the playground? Or brown people being discriminated against at work.

So, you are saying that these people are responsible for brown people being killed? or being discriminated against at work?

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:32

They have just shifted their focus ever so slightly where brown is the new black.

what specifically have they said that says they want Canada/America/US to be an apartheid state?

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2018 21:35

Left wing hate equivalent of Hitler must be Stalin sending those who dared to disagree with him to die in labour camps. Millions also. He didn't believe in free speech either.

minifingerz · 14/03/2018 21:40

Twitter is awash with people who insist that ALL Muslims support terror. All of them. That if you're a Muslim then you hate women, you support the rape of children, that you are no better than a suicide bomber.

And over the past year there's been a 5 fold increase in incidents of violence and abuse aimed at Muslims in the UK.

Can't you see that people who are going around whipping up hatred against Muslims in the UK are making life more dangerous and frightening and restrictive for British Muslims?

Can people really not see the parallels between what is going on now and what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930's?

DullAndOld · 14/03/2018 21:43

" Can people really not see the parallels between what is going on now and what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930's? "

no not really. Have any camps been opened?

kalapattar · 14/03/2018 21:43

So, you are saying that these people are responsible for brown people being killed? or being discriminated against at work

I would say that increased rhetoric and a generalised stirring up of sentiment against certain groups by the media and online (with only negative news, negative stories being heard) as well as echo chambers does play a part in such things.

VioletteValentia · 14/03/2018 21:43

minifingerz

Exactly. Also they target anyone vaguely brown. DP wears a kara ffs and we’ve still been accused of being Muslim and abused by these mouth breathing idiots. Hmm

They’re a danger to anyone who isn’t white.

FailingMotherhood · 14/03/2018 21:43

Does Pettibone endorse that particular view of McCarthy (rather ironically named in this discussion), or just some view?

She cheerfully co-hosts a show with her called 'Virtue of the West', where it says that the views of the guests may diverge from the official views of McCarthy and Pettibone - they're presented as a pair.

Personally, I'd be inclined to avoid associating myself personally and professionally with someone who advocates removing immigrants and naturalised citizens "through any means neccessary, including threatening them at the point of a gun and killing them if they resist", and offering non-white Brits money to leave, with the aim of setting up a white ethnostate.

kalapattar · 14/03/2018 21:44

Do you know your history?

It's like boiling a frog.

HolgerDanske · 14/03/2018 21:45

Twitter is a scourge, it is everything that is wrong with the world right now.

But that is exactly why we must get more people actually talking, in real life, in universities and on streets and in homes and on speaker:s corner. To take discourse out of the mad arena that is the Twitter shitpit and into real, concrete, actual life.

And that includes letting people speak whose views we vehemently disagree with, as long as they are not inciting to actual violence.
