RockyBayEve · 14/03/2018 18:49

After 3 free speech advocates American Brittany Pettibone, her Austrian boyfriend and Canadian journalist Lauren Southern are detained by UK border force, barred from speaking at Speakers Corner, deported or barred entry.

Mainly because we get shoved into the military, jails if we refuse, get our language l/culture banned etc by exactly the same sort of people who brought Auschwitz, Majdanek, Treblinka to Europe. Except for the few who are really Scandinavians and fully go along with it.

DietCokeGirrrrrl · 14/03/2018 20:50

Why is it always the people with the least understanding about what free speech who bang on about it the loudest Hmm get a grip, OP. I guarantee that you don't support the right of Islamic terrorists to stand up in mosques and encourage young men to martyr themselves by blowing up planes so stop pretending you believe in unlimited free speech and acknowledge that you just think the far right should be held to a different standard.

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2018 20:51

But there's a difference between wanting to kill or encouraging someone else to kill and disagreeing with them.

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 20:52

I don’t care if my refusal to tolerate racists offends you. I refuse to tolerate people who want to kill me and my children for existing.

do the people who weren't let into the UK want to kill you?

VioletteValentia · 14/03/2018 20:54

They’re perfectly happy riling up the far right against people like me, yes.

53rdWay · 14/03/2018 20:54

"Sellner, an Austrian and prominent figure in the anti-migration group Generation Identity, was due to make a speech in Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. He was the leader of a "Defend Europe" campaign last summer, responsible for targeting boats run by NGOs trying to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean."

DullAndOld · 14/03/2018 20:54

right user, you sound rational.
When exactly did you personally 'get shoved in the military' or 'put in jail for refusing'?
ah right, that would be never.
If you want to start a thread on British colonisation of Ireland, then I suggest you do so but you would need to be more precise in your writing.

Penfold007 · 14/03/2018 20:56

freedom of speech/expression has never existed in the UK. Under Common Law we have a negative right to free expression.

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2018 20:57

Unfortunately whilst stopping free speech may stop preaching to young Muslim men to commit acts of terrorism, it also meant that the Sheffield police were too scared of being called racist to challenge Muslim men who were grooming and sexually exploiting young girls.

HolgerDanske · 14/03/2018 20:58

Yes. That is true.

And that is why Speaker’s Corner is so important to me.

user1497863568 · 14/03/2018 20:59

Yeah , not yet, centuries of bitter experience though Hmm

DullAndOld · 14/03/2018 21:01

honestly user, start your own thread, it's an entirely different topic.
And don't start on me, I am Irish too, and have studied British/Irish history more extensively than most.

FailingMotherhood · 14/03/2018 21:01

Are our 'pro-free speech' advocates OK with the fact that Pettibone endorses the views of Tara McCarthy, who think that black people are a separate species to white, and interracial relationships are 'borderline bestiality'?

We have laws that allow us to deny entry to extremists - we've got enough of our own without adding to their number.

user1497863568 · 14/03/2018 21:03

It's relevant because these are exactly the sort who have a problem with us too..

DullAndOld · 14/03/2018 21:04

'these are exactly the sort that have a problem with us too'
I am sorry but have you any idea how you sound?

FlyTipper · 14/03/2018 21:04

Utter tosh marchin1984. We have spoken about nothing BUT immigration since forever. If you can't see that, you're blind.

@mygoditsfullofstars
Far left hatred is disrupting speakers who have been invited to Universities to speak to students who want to listen and debate because you have a different opinion. blah blah.

Yes, I see what you mean. This is the exact equivalent to gassing millions. At a protest and marching around with weapons. Wanting to eliminate or segregate whole sections of society because of the colour of their skin, religion or something else.

The regressive left may be intolerant. But the far right should only be tolerated within limits by any decent society.

PonderWhy · 14/03/2018 21:05

It is astounding that even in this day and age, there are those who still dehumanise non-white people.

DullAndOld · 14/03/2018 21:06

I mean, be more precise..
who do you mean by 'these'?
Are they part of the British government that you have an issue with?
No, they are Canadians who have been refused entry to the UK.
You are just going off on a tangent.

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:08

Are our 'pro-free speech' advocates OK with the fact that Pettibone endorses the views of Tara McCarthy, who think that black people are a separate species to white, and interracial relationships are 'borderline bestiality'?

yes.

First, your statement is rather vague. Does Pettibone endorse that particular view of McCarthy (rather ironically named in this discussion), or just some view? Also, if you think that black people are a separate species, you just out yourself as an idiot. Species actually has a precise definition, and it certainly doesn't lie between white people and black people.

They’re perfectly happy riling up the far right against people like me, yes.

that's different though, right?

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 21:10

It used to be quite mainstream to be be pro freedom of expression or " pro free speech", the oft quoted limit being incitement to violence.

I feel this had changed. If you think pro free speech is probably a handy cover for being a Nazi how old are you?

Also being generally for freedom of expression never meant one agreed with every opinion allowed. (As if that were even logically possible.)

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:10

Utter tosh marchin1984. We have spoken about nothing BUT immigration since forever. If you can't see that, you're blind.

no, we haven't. We have people on this very thread claiming that it's difficult to have a reasonable debate on immigration because you quickly get labelled a xenophobe.

kalapattar · 14/03/2018 21:11

Far left hatred is disrupting speakers who have been invited to Universities to speak to students who want to listen and debate because you have a different opinion

What about students who don't want to debate but who just want to listen to views of hate they agree with?

Is it ok in your view to legitimately protest against that?

Does anything go on campus? No matter what.

VioletteValentia · 14/03/2018 21:11

No, it isn’t different. Why should me and my family, who are multiracial, have to live in fear of racists?

whiteroseredrose · 14/03/2018 21:13

A person with a penis wearing a dress may be offended if I said that I believe that their genitals and XY chromosomes make them a man.

On the other hand I'd be damned offended by that person believing that they have a right to come into my women-only refuge.

I think they're a man. They think they're a woman. They have no proof yet I'm the one gagged and unable to publicly express my opinion.

Group-think doesn't make it right and it's very dangerous if people are scared to challenge. That way authoritarianism lies.

marchin1984 · 14/03/2018 21:13

Why specifically travel to areas that they have identified 'Muslim' to bring their anti immigration message? Publicity.

then why give it to them? You know a great way to give anti-establishment people publicity? Ban them from entering your country, for non-violent speech.
