To miss shopping in the 90's and early noughties

I used to love shopping but now there are very few shops I actually like. I miss Jeffrey Rogers, Bay Trading Co, MK One, Pilot etc. Not high end clothing granted but there were always things I liked.

These days a lot of stores are online but I can't be bothered with what would probably be constant sending things back as a lot of things look great on the hanger but crap on me. Primark is ok but hell to shop in when I can go as it is so busy and don't get me started on the mirrors. New Look is ok as is H & M too but really that's about it. I actually prefer charity shops and car boots now but today I just feel really nostalgic for the high street of yesteryear.

Does anyone else feel the same?

I miss the smaller shops. There was an army surplus shop in Bath called QM stores - I had purple combats from there that I wore with strappy vests and boots and probably the obligatory choker. In the summer those ethnic sarong wraps with little vest and choker.

I still have a Jane Norman dress.

It was all a bit simpler. I'd hate to be a teenager now.

Sevendown · 14/03/2018 20:53

I loved my 90s fashions!

I had a Giant skirt, I assume they went bust?

Fattynoms02 · 14/03/2018 20:54

Anyone remember kangaroo trainers?

Used to love bay trading, Mark 1, pilot, snob, kookai!

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 20:54

In the 80s I loved Miss Selfridge. I also remember the joy of seeing once in Wallis the blouse as worn by the blonde lass from The Human League on that week's TOTP.

Now I can't see a thing I like..or that fits right!

I miss stationary shops which sell a random selection of books and forever friends stationary. Bang on the door stationary. "Individual" gift sized birthday cakes in card shops. Pokemon cards filling every newsagents window. Bored teenage shop assistants with spots rather than over made up perfect faces with a sales patter. MFI. Tammy girl. C and A. Weird fruit in syrup in jars displayed as gifts. Shops with whole displays of glass ware. Disney shops with huge piles of toys. AlternAtive shops stinking of incense with selling iron on patches with pictures of cannabis and yellow smiley faces. Shitty cheap trainers in fluorescent colours in sports shops. Queues for ear piercing in the window at Claire's.

Does anyone remember tribe perfume ? I absolutely adored it and still reminisce about the smell

Crunched · 14/03/2018 20:55

Yes PepperMintPasty we are too old for this thread.
Oxford Street Miss Selfridge though! I saw Marc Almond trying on some boots designed for ladies there (and that was shocking in those days!)

Fattynoms02 · 14/03/2018 20:55

Oh yeh I used to love my strappy dress from giant sevendown

buddahbelly · 14/03/2018 20:55

XICI - I used to work in dodo's, the big one in town, the people were so strict and id never be paid on time but it was fab, id go to college in the latest miss Selfridge cast offs.

And I loved Open, I had 2 sports bags from Paul smith from there, wish I still had them now.

I miss these days now, loved la sense, box avenue seems overpriced shit in comparison.

buddahbelly · 14/03/2018 20:57

God this keyboard! la senza and Boux avenue I meant!

RingtheBells · 14/03/2018 20:57

I’m also too old, probably by about 25 years Sad

TheTab · 14/03/2018 20:57

Surely Sun In was 80s I left school in 82 still with streaky patches from Sun In.

Pilot? They're still going aren't they?

Andthatsthat · 14/03/2018 20:58

And Miss Sixty, yes! I had the biggest, widest, flappiest flares from there, I loved them in my early clubbing days, teamed with a backless top!

HobnobBob · 14/03/2018 20:59

I loved Bay Trading, I’d totally forgotten about it.

Butterfly clips in your hair!

SpringMayHaveSprung · 14/03/2018 20:59

Ah the 80s My husband wore eyeliner going out: the kids look unbelieving.

I saw Pete Burns looking gorgeous with his wife. In M and S!

Damnpeskykids · 14/03/2018 20:59

Everything you've said @Zoflorabore exclamation! Though impuls o2 was my spray of choice... I LOVED shopping in the 90s, when £20 could buy you 4 tops from the market, a bath set & a McDonald's meal!
Once puberty kicked in, I shot up and out so was so bloody envious of my average sized friends who could buy all the lovely clothes which on a 6 foot size 14 awkward as fuck teenager just looked hideous! Didn't help I had the thickest naff bob which I could do nothing with, alas my babyliss steam & shine hair straighteners probably ripped more hair out of my head than actually straightened! My lack of cool clothing pushed me into a make up obsession - coffee shimmer lipstick anyone?!

CheekyRedhead · 14/03/2018 21:00

Halfwitpicker I loved red or dead!!! Bought loads of t-shirts from there!

Jenasaurus · 14/03/2018 21:00

I used to love shopping at Lady at Lord John, Mates, Jane Norman for clothes and have fond memories of shopping at Woolworths, Timothy Whites for homewares and sweets, shops now are not the same or maybe it just feels that way.

Faze84 · 14/03/2018 21:04

Probably early 00s but did anyone have those Bench jackets. They were zip up turtle neck style with BENCH at back of Turtleneck. Usually 2 tone colour like red and white. Blush

Namechangetempissue · 14/03/2018 21:04

Athena for all your posters you couldn't get from Smash Hits/Mizz/Sugar/NME.

Iminthecclubnow · 14/03/2018 21:04

Weren't the bench jackets the one with the hole in the sleeve for your thumb?

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2018 21:05

Marc Almond though! All I managed was bumping (literally) into Joan Collins in my one and only trip to Harrods! Hahaha oh god, happy days!

Cosmiccowgirl84 · 14/03/2018 21:06

Our shopping trip consisted of:

  • Topshop
  • Miss Selfridge
  • River Island
  • Bay Trading
  • Jeffrey Rogers
  • La Senza (had posh bags!)
  • Pilot
  • New Look ( it was a new shop then)
  • C&A
  • Sweater Shop
  • Mark One
  • a huge cheap place called Fashion Floor
  • Bows and Bangles (turned into Claire’s Accessories I think)
  • Dolcis for shoes

Oasis, Warehouse, Kookai were the posh / expensive shops!

Everyone had school trousers from Bay Trading with silver buttons instead of fly zip. Shoes from Dolcis, big and chunky Grin

Andthatsthat · 14/03/2018 21:07

Exclamation, Tribe and So.... the smells of my school days. I got a whiff of exclamation recently in a Superdrug, made me emotional with the nostalgia of it! As does listening to Robbie sing ‘Could It Be Magic’ am I going too far now?? 🤣

peachgreen · 14/03/2018 21:08

@nowater34 I LONGED for stick thin legs I could make look even skinnier with super chunky Kickers!

My dream outfit was a Kangol beret, a navy long sleeved t-shirt from Miss Selfridge that had a big pink velvet heart on it (I remember it so well!), a pair of bootleg jeans from TopShop that I could neither afford nor fit into, a denim jacket (DOUBLE DENIM), and pastel coloured platform trainers like Baby Spice wore. All topped off with some hair mascara, stars from Barry M stuck to the corners of my eyelids with Vaseline, really sticky Lip Gloss and Body Shop White Musk body spray. Oh and a ying yang necklace.
