To miss shopping in the 90's and early noughties

I used to love shopping but now there are very few shops I actually like. I miss Jeffrey Rogers, Bay Trading Co, MK One, Pilot etc. Not high end clothing granted but there were always things I liked.

These days a lot of stores are online but I can't be bothered with what would probably be constant sending things back as a lot of things look great on the hanger but crap on me. Primark is ok but hell to shop in when I can go as it is so busy and don't get me started on the mirrors. New Look is ok as is H & M too but really that's about it. I actually prefer charity shops and car boots now but today I just feel really nostalgic for the high street of yesteryear.

Does anyone else feel the same?

Wow, I'd forgotten all about Bay Trading, Pilot and Etam even though I used to buy basically all my clothes in there! Now I struggle too - no idea where I am supposed to shop as a 33 year old Wink

buddahbelly · 14/03/2018 20:35

zoflorabore also from Liverpool

God wade smith brought it all back...going in on my payday pretending I could buy anything in there and coming out with a pair of socks just for the bag.

and Stationery box, oh how I would spend my Saturdays wandering the massive shop for stuff I didn't need. its responsible for my collection of pens still.

Do you remember the shop in st johns on the upstairs floor that used to do little body sets too, youd get a basket and fill it with fancy little soaps int he shapes of animals, bath beads and such and the lady would put the clingfilm over it and heat seal it. I wanna say frocks but cant be sure, get nostalgic every time I walk past anyway as its still there, just clothes now though.

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:36

OM MY GOD MY KANGOL BACKWARDS FLAT CAP.

I must have looked SUCH a bellend.

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:38

Layering two spaghetti strap vests in different colours.

With my Little Miss bras from La Senza.

candyloves · 14/03/2018 20:38

100% agree
Loved Bay Trading, Tammy Girl, C+A, Topshop (before it went stupidly expensive), MK1, and even little independent clothes shops that sold 'going out' clothes for the friday night disco.

StewPots · 14/03/2018 20:39

@AmberNectarine did you wear your hair like mine? Scraped back, Tied up loose at the back, Kangol on (flat cap back) with a thin strand of hair each side? Grin

Laiste · 14/03/2018 20:40

Ooohing and aaahing through this. I remember them all!

Jane Norman stands out because i remember always loving their stuff and finally loosing enough weight to get into it Grin This was around 2006 ish?

Happy days.

Long shot - does anyone here remember Hyper Hyper in London? Deadlier than the Male?

I 100% did. Sometimes those front bits were curled or bleached.

I remember Hyper Hyper.

Andthatsthat · 14/03/2018 20:42

Anyone remember Snob? I had a massive faux fur jacket from there. Wish I’d kept it, it would be back in fashion now!!

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:42

I had the same Jane Norman brown checked top Posh Spice wore in the 2 Become 1 video, which made me a minor celebrity at school.

JaneEyre70 · 14/03/2018 20:42

I used to get loads of stuff in Etam, Richards, Principles, even M & S back then when Per Una was worth splashing out on. And good old C & A. I really struggle buying clothes now - I'm very into SeaSalt at the moment but lord it's expensive for what it is.

C0untDucku1a · 14/03/2018 20:43

Has la senza gone too?!

Was also coming on to say kookai.

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:45

I remember wearing a floral Kookai spaghetti strap dress layered over a black t-shirt to my brothers wedding.

cheeseandcrackers · 14/03/2018 20:46

Hair mascara! I had UV hair mascara that I wore to a school disco but I went to the loos and smoothed down my hair with wet hands about half way through. Back to the disco and I realised I now had UV liquid all over my hands and dripping down my neck, never again!

XiCi · 14/03/2018 20:46

Aaargh clothes shopping in Liverpool in the 90s. Loved it. Do you remember Flip in Bold St for vintage clothing, Quiggins for vintage Levis, Morgan and Kookai. There was a shop called OPEN where Primark is now that had a whole floor devoted to Paul Smith and a great shop Dodo's that did amazingly cheap on trend pieces.
Online shopping seems so boring now in comparison

Crunched · 14/03/2018 20:47

RingtheBells the C&A was massive! And John Lewis was so posh!
Now it just feels a bit grimy in MK ...

NellMangel · 14/03/2018 20:47

Happy days!

I liked to browse The Pier and imagine how I would do out my house.

The Reject Shop was great for random shit like a car ornament that mooned out of the back window.

My Saturday treat was choosing a pair of novelty socks at...the sock shop.

Some fave outfits spanning the decade:

  • cricket jumper and cord skirt with pleather ruched boots with tassels
  • baby doll dress over t-shirt with black tights and boots
  • various fluffy jumpers worn with Aline short skirt and converse. Clubbing in hot jumpers?
  • vintage fred Perry tracksuit top over any outfit
  • vintage ski jacket??

Chelsea Girl and Miss Selfridge for me in the 80s. Miss S back then was the absolute pinnacle of my (and my mates') desires. I did shoplift a few bangles from the Croydon branch in my teens Blush, sorry Croydon branch.

Loved Faith. Got some wicked boots that I'll never wear as I can't actually walk in them, but I'm hanging on to them like grim death.

Yy to Miss Sixty...are they no longer with us? All my jeans are from there, I still wear them all the time. Also I have a beautiful denim jacket from there that I still wear.

The absolute top memory for me though has to be the Oxford Street Miss Selfridge...my dad used to take me up to London for a treat every now and again, just me and him, we'd go to lunch in the Army and Navy store in Victoria, then walk around London chatting and nosing about. He knew London streets like the back of his hand.

Then we'd finish with a mahoosive shopping spree in Miss Selfridge.

Damn I miss my dad!!!

Longdistance · 14/03/2018 20:48

I shopped in all of the stores op mentioned.

I also used to go shopping with my then bf to London and bought loads in H&M Oxford street and French Connection. Around 1994???

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:48

Everyone on this thread must be 30-35, I reckon.

Platform jelly shoes. They were definitely a thing. I don't think I even saw a stiletto heel until 2001.

Turn of the century, fashion got shite. It was all handkerchief hems, cropped combats, string vests and one shoulder tops. I blame the Sugababes tbh.

PeppermintPasty · 14/03/2018 20:48

(I appreciate I'm a decade too early. I am old and was feeling left out Wink)

HobnobBob · 14/03/2018 20:49

AmberNectarine I had those exact trainers too. I loved them!

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:50

They were opposite each other, weren't they longdistance. Or was that Benetton?

I remember there was deffo Shelleys on one corner, Topshop on the next, then H&M.

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:52

Reebok classics were social suicide at our school. I've recently bought a couple of metallic pairs and had to talk myself round to it. I'm 99% sure my friends of 25y won't disown me, but you never know.
