To miss shopping in the 90's and early noughties

I used to love shopping but now there are very few shops I actually like. I miss Jeffrey Rogers, Bay Trading Co, MK One, Pilot etc. Not high end clothing granted but there were always things I liked.

These days a lot of stores are online but I can't be bothered with what would probably be constant sending things back as a lot of things look great on the hanger but crap on me. Primark is ok but hell to shop in when I can go as it is so busy and don't get me started on the mirrors. New Look is ok as is H & M too but really that's about it. I actually prefer charity shops and car boots now but today I just feel really nostalgic for the high street of yesteryear.

Does anyone else feel the same?

not an inflatable one just ones that I couldn’t fit anything in

AmberNectarine · 14/03/2018 20:16

It also wouldn't be a 90s thread if we didn't mention Sun-In or hair mascara. I had a white version of the latter, which was handy for the 'just been crapped on by a bird' look.

I was living in Switzerland until about 18 months ago.

C&A is in almost all of the shopping centres....my mum came for a visit and we both enjoyed buying a few items (I’m short and bought a few pairs of jeans which were the perfect length :) ). They still had the Yessica and Clockhouse ‘brands’ in store which I remembered from my youth. Actually C&A shops are pretty much all over mainland western Europe from what I observed. I don’t know why they pulled out of the UK and this must have been around 30 years ago?

Also in the town centre (Zug) there was a ‘Kookai’ shop (I never went in there as Swiss prices are outrageous, unless there is a sale on...it’s like being in the UK 40 years ago....sales are just after Christmas and in the Summer, not all year round like it seems to be in the UK and US).

My sister was amused when she came to visit.....we went in the big town centre ‘Coop’ supermarket, which is almost like a department store and she spotted a tunic top which she owned.....it was a F&F top which she bought from Tesco and she was amused to see F&F clothes being sold there (at a much larger price than she paid lol!).

The ‘Manor’ department stores sell ‘Phase Eight’ clothes too.

Going back to the original topic....I used to go to ‘Trueform’ for my shoes when I was a young teenager, a few years later it became a Dolcis. Was ‘Trueform’ a national brand?

I also used to like tops with the ‘Dash’ brand (nothing to do with the Kartrashians) which I bought at either at Allders Department store or its predesessor Owen Owen. It’s now a Primark.

I also used to wear clothes from Etam too!

Btw: I’m currently living in the USA and on the TV adverts right now Walmart is heavily publicizing the ‘George’ brand for men (which has only ever been in two or three styles on the shop floor as far as I’m aware). I just hope it’s the same stuff as in the UK....I usually avoid Walmart as their clothes make Primark look like Gucci in comparison lol!

😂😂

slippermaiden · 14/03/2018 20:19

I miss river island when it used to sell pretty clothes. Now it's all a bit townie except for their skinny jeans!

Crunched · 14/03/2018 20:19

Do you remember Chelsea Girl? Think I am older than you. And Freeman, Hardy & Willis(Wills?) for huge arguments with DM over heels being too high for school.
Then I would head down to McDonalds when it was newly opened in Milton Keynes city centre and laugh about anyone being able to eat a whole Big Mac Glitterball

witchofzog · 14/03/2018 20:20

I totally forgot about Envy. I miss Envy. I also had the kicker platform shoes. They lasted literally for years! And I had a "Hussy" tiny backpack that I loved to death. Totally impractical though Grin

nowater I had that exact same pair for school and loved them, the days of walking to school in my multi coloured satin nan nan jacket with my bottle green uniform on and these. ahhhhhhh! happy times!

I used to work in dolls and would spend my days putting away shoes to loan for nights out. I was crap at maths but when it came to my staff discount I became rainman.

buddahbelly · 14/03/2018 20:22

Naf naf jacket! Grin my nan had her own jacket Wink

Annabelle4 · 14/03/2018 20:23

I love this thread.

I adored Morgan... everything was black and and had chain belts. I thought it was so glamorous Blush

I agree about Jane Norman having tiny sizes. I was a size 10 as a teen and in my early 20s but I think my clothes from there were a 12 or even 14. It was very expensive too, so I mostly shopped during the sales. I think they used to have amazing sales though, rails with 75% off?

RingtheBells · 14/03/2018 20:23

Crunched I remember Chelsea Girl and Freeman Hardy Willis, I also remember the excitement of going to Milton Keynes when it opened and the massive C&A there, well it seemed massive then

dinosaursandtea · 14/03/2018 20:24

Ohhhh hair mascara! I do miss that. Hair chalk isn’t the same - doesn’t have the right smell!

Annabelle4 · 14/03/2018 20:24

Does anyone remember UFO platforms, nope trousers?

Namechangetempissue · 14/03/2018 20:24

I had a Chipie bag and trainers which I saved up for -took me 3 months. Thought I was the shit when I got them.

BattleaxeGalactica · 14/03/2018 20:25

There is (or was) a C&A in Prague. Stocked up on cotton jumpers for dh at about six quid a pop and their extremely sturdy socks for me while we were there. I have missed CA socks...

Namechangetempissue · 14/03/2018 20:26

Just remembered the skirt over trousers trend!!! Horrors!

Zoflorabore · 14/03/2018 20:27

I was a teenager in Liverpool in the early-mid nineties, I'm 40.

As a younger teen I was obsessed with the Oilily shop, it's no longer there but I now buy it for my 7yr old dd.

Naf Naf/Chipie/Benetton and Dash were the popular names back then.
Everyone got their shoes from Dolcis or Ravel.
The Body Shop- kiwi lip balm/ dewberry bubble bath and then the little gift baskets that you would buy your mates for Christmas.

Benetton bags in every single colour, how I loved them!

Forever friends stationery, especially the pencil case tins.
Going into Stationary Box to buy all of your back to school supplies.

Tribe and Exclamation! Perfume- they were amazing.

Going into Clintons and buying gorgeous wrapping paper to cover your school books.

Fila trainers ( I had pink ) Travel Fox and later on the original Nike Air Max.

Wade Smith designer department store. I bought a DKNY bag that I loved so much.

Going into GHL and trying on 35 different perfumes all at once.

Wow this thread has got me all nostalgic.

Lentilbaby · 14/03/2018 20:27

Oh my good god.....this is really warming my heart Grin Miss Sixty jeans, Acupuncture trainers, Shelley's was the best shoe shop ever!! Naf Naf pencil case and school bag! Kickers and wallabys!

Odoreida · 14/03/2018 20:28

I spent my teenage years dressed courtesy of Camden market, flared corduroy Levis (in green or red), DMs, army tshirts, khaki jackets.

Namechangetempissue · 14/03/2018 20:30

I have Tribe perfume now! I got it in a fit of nostalgia at Christmas

halfwitpicker · 14/03/2018 20:31

I was crap at maths but when it came to my staff discount I became rainman.

^
Grin

halfwitpicker · 14/03/2018 20:32

I think Chelsea Girl was only down south?

StewPots · 14/03/2018 20:32

Haha I used to wear camo khaki trousers or Spliffy jeans with a Kangol hat (turned so the flap went out behind my head obviously) and also those crop tops with the dye heart in the middle Grin

Mum and Dad divorced when I was 13 and we didn't have much money so I couldn't spend anything on clothes - even my wages went to Mum for food, but my absolute pride and joy was a Adidas Tracky zip hoodie. It was dark pink and very Run DMC. Wore it with my khaki combats and Ellesse trainers Grin

Mum and my older brother had saved up together for ages for it as my Christmas present. I treasured that top, I think I wore it right up till I was pregnant with DD about 4 years later!

Also had Kickers shoes before Mum and Dad split up, and I loved my Naf Naf coat. Had that for eons as well.

I miss those days. Even though Mum and I lived hand to mouth with like £1 for electric for a couple of days most weeks,it was still great in terms of The fashion, the music, my friends....I wouldn't change my teen years for anything, except that Mum didn't have to struggle so much.

PinkAvocado · 14/03/2018 20:33

@slippermaiden I haven’t heard ‘townie’ in years! I wondered if anyone else still remembered the term only recently.

speakout · 14/03/2018 20:33

I;ve never heard of any of those shops OP.
