I think a slogan on a little girl's top about smiling is much better than those tops saying "babe" or "eye candy" or something objectifying like that.

AnxiousPeg · 14/03/2018 19:52

I would never wear a top with that slogan, nor would I put my daughters in it. This is mainly because you just know some jackass is going to comment on it unless (and even if) you plaster a pollyanna smile on your face all day long.

All part of the same tedious problem.

Elendon · 14/03/2018 19:53

I may be wrong, I've been to a couple of raves in my time, but I always believed that 'eye candy' was a gay slogan.

Babe was a multinational word for english baby. The stress being on the e and the y.

It now has a different meaning, which I can't get my head around actually. who the fuck calls their lover babe

Willow2017 · 14/03/2018 20:04

It doesnt matter if the t-shirt is there or not. The debate still stands on its own merits. If everything we thought about had to be fact first we would never get anywhere.

nooka · 14/03/2018 20:13

In Annie the song is an advert for toothpaste, nothing to do with having a nice personality really, I think that's just an interpretation that it's nice for Annie to make as she will never have the nice clothes but she can smile.

Are men exhorted to smile and be nice? I've never heard anyone yell 'give us a smile luv to a man/boy on the street. Or language policed when they aren't thought to be kind and inclusive enough.

I'm all for smiling when you actually want to, and do think that smiles can be infectious and bring good mental health but I have been yelled at for not looking happy enough, and also got in trouble for looking friendly rather than putting my best 'not interested' face on so I get people's concerns. Even if the OP might well have been a GF.

LardLizard · 14/03/2018 21:34

BertrandRussell · 14/03/2018 21:39

Very strange. To paraphrase many previous posters, haven’t you got anything current to be upset by?

No you didn't post a link. Someone else has posted a link to a t shirt with the slogan you mentioned. Only this t-shirt was in the male section. How do you feel about a t-shirt for a male with that same slogan OP?

Oysterbabe · 14/03/2018 21:44

Why is this offensive OP? YABU to post a 3 letter AIBU.

kinorsam · 15/03/2018 00:15

Smiling releases endorphins and serotonin. Both of which are good for you - they help to fight illness, and make you feel more cheerful.

Grin

ThoraCentisis · 15/03/2018 00:42

If some people can’t see why this offends others, I can’t be arsed to explain it to you

or because you can't articulate what is so offensive about the lyrics of a song from the 70,s?

AhCheeses · 15/03/2018 00:46

In the interest of balance, I've just bought my DS this tshirt...
m2.hm.com/m/en_gb/productpage.0600768003.html
It states that you should 'use your smile to change the world' and it has sequins on it... he loves it because the sequins are reversible, he couldn't give a shit what it says on it.
I love it because it's a clean tshirt that he will wear that doesn't make him look like Stig of the dump.

CadyHeron · 15/03/2018 00:49

Don't give us that bollocks. Either explain it to us or we will assume that you don't know why you're so offended either.

It's a quote from a song from Annie. Jesus let go of those pearls and stop trying to find offensive things in life.
