Has anybody noticed Putin’s had a facelift recently too? He’s knocking on a bit, nearly 70. Think that’s why he’s so keen to big up his tough guy act.

I read on one of the conspiracy theory threads that he's immortal Grin

Problem with wind and other renewables is the intermittency, and the amount of space they take up. Offshore wind is a great opportunity, but to make the most of it you need considerable infrastructure investment and international cooperation (North sea offshore grid and increased interconnection for eg).
Increased cooperation with neighbouring countries should theoretically still be possible post Brexit, but may be a harder sell politically.

It's not just direct Nimbyism to the wind farms themselves, there is also an issue with people being very wary of any potential incentives to change behaviour. (I do understand some of the scepticism tbh but some of it is not based on facts at all).
Look at some of the conspiracy theories around smart meters, for eg (the very idea that they may be used in the future to encourage consumers to use less electricity around times of peak demand was a matter of outrage on another thread).

Whatever energy we use in the future is going to have a downside; there are no free lunches. It's about choosing the least bad option and unfortunately policy is not just informed by objective evidence, but by popular opinion (which can be wrong).

I'm not a fracking lover either but a couple of years ago I read Gary kasparov's book 'winter is coming - why Putin is a danger to the free world' and one of the interesting things I remember was his condemnation of Obama who was able to turn his back on interventionist foreign policy basically because as a consequence of fracking, the US was now so much more energy independent, so they no longer have the same economic imperative to be the world's policeman. By the end of that disturbing book, I remember thinking we should bloody get on with our own fracking too, however distasteful.

Putin is a psychopath. In the true sense this is exactly what he is.

gussyfinknottle · 15/03/2018 14:10

Sociopath maybe but not a psychopath. He knows exactly what he's doing and he thinks we are not going to do much more than look a bit cross and expel a few diplomats.
This joint statement thing is just noise.

lljjk I’m not sure she would be dual citizenship I don’t think you get granted it just because you’re a legal immigrant? She’s got a very strong Russian accent and definitely grew up in Russia although she’s been here for about 15 years.

He's a psychopath who has had Botox..

Backscratchesforever · 15/03/2018 14:24

Don’t read the propaganda and you won’t be so worried.

Itsthebullseye · 15/03/2018 14:28

What’s the point of worrying. It’s all a load of bollocks that has been going on for 70 years

Doryismyname · 15/03/2018 14:57

Quite apt that the BBC aired a documentary about Putin the same weekend as this happened.

lljkk · 15/03/2018 14:58

Ur neighbour probably has settled status, then, what was before called indef. leave to remain.

Maybe restrict property buying to (also Russian) people who only had IDLR or right to abode (citizenship).

Was Breznev the one who did actually die but was mummified to come out and watch the military parade one year?
