I love it that Trump has already insulted him with a nickname (Mnuchin says it's just 'fun' that Trump does this and it doesn't mean anything) and now he's on the way to the Senate - I don't think Conor Lamb is a sham then is he... stick that up your expansive arse 45 Grin

Roussette · 14/03/2018 07:00

Eeek claws I'm being a bit premature, ignore me!

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 14/03/2018 07:02

It’s a wonderful result to wake up to. I’m thrilled for our transatlantic friends Star

I have to say though, I’m feeling a bit despondent at how there’s no similar resistance here in the uk. The Lib Dems are trying and I’ll support them in the local elections and try to convince others not to give their vote to Brexit backing parties but where is the pushback to our slide to authoritarianism? Where is our resistance to the hostile breaking down of democratic norms? Just because Theresa May and her motley crew can string a sentence together doesn’t mean they’re less of a threat than trump - it makes them more of one because to bring it full circle back to our wooly friends, they’re wolves in sheep’s clothing and can do so much more damage under the veneer of being respectable.

I would like a wave here too. Doesn’t have to be red, or yellow, or green - ideally it’d be a mixture of them all, including some blue too, but if it is happening, it’s happening very slowly and not approaching any strength to actually stop us falling victim to a naked power grab and turning irrevocably into a far right country.

Before I go, though, here is a photo for you, Pain, along with my own favourite from yesterday!

Awww... Conor taking his Nan to vote!

Those are lovely photos! Just realised he’s only a couple of years older than me and not in his forties as I’d thought (clearly not paying much attention Blush)

It is really quite hilarious that trump attacked lamb on how he looks in comparison to himself. Unlike all his other delusions, this feels like a safe one to laugh at, that doesn’t have immediate nuclear-war-might-be-imminent implications. Though now I’ve typed that, who knows how trump will react this morning

Lweji · 14/03/2018 07:41

"A Republican official told CNN that Trump, who was raising money with GOP donors in Beverly Hills, California, has been asking for updates throughout the evening and is pleasantly surprised by the narrow margin."

Maybe they know there'll be a recount for a GOP win. Hmm

lionheart · 14/03/2018 07:49

Excellent news whether Lamb gets it or not.

Glad I did not stay up and follow it--I have only just started to get to bed at a sort of sensible time after the dread election.

'The family of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich, who was killed in 2016, has filed a lawsuit against Fox News, an investigative reporter and one of the network's frequent guests over a story about Rich and allegations that he was involved in a conspiracy, according to the lawsuit.'

I'm glad you asked about the deleted Pompeo tweet, ouais, as I was a bit befuzzled too, and that Business Insider link about his confirmation hearing has helped.

So if I now understand aright, Pompeo either saw Wikileaks as a trustworthy source, which would put him at odds with the assessment of the CIA he was about to become head of.

Or he didn't see Wikileaks as a trustworthy source, in which case he had deliberately propagated material he didn't believe was true, for political gain.

In his confirmation hearing he admits – indirectly – to the latter.

It's not a good look for the head of the CIA.

Urban dictionary came to my rescue with that one cozie

Democrat Conor Lamb is the apparent winner of Pennsylvania special election in Trump country
At around 5:30 a.m. ET, NBC News reported that it appeared that Lamb had won.
The only outstanding votes are the approximately 200 absentee votes in Greene county, it said, and the provisional ballots that the district will count within the next seven days.
Pro-GOP groups poured money into the race to avoid a loss that may shake up November's battle for control of Congress.

PAIN, I’m in despair at the UK situation too. It’s dire.
I’m in Scotland, and and I have to say that the only coherent and sustained opposition to the Conservative party and their policies ATM is coming from Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP, who of course only field candidates North of the border. Labour certainly isn’t doing it’s job as official party of opposition.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 14/03/2018 11:54

I missed the SNP/Plaid Cymru in my desired rainbow wave but they absolutely would be a crucial part of it. Cross party resistance would be amazing but with the Labour front bench not wanting to be part of it, it's feeling a bit futile at the moment.

And wtf but May is showing some backbone and leadership. The world really has gone mad

Breaking: The PM will announce the expulsion of Russian diplomats from the UK. Not as many as in 1971 but “significant” I’m told.
Not sure if the Russian Ambassador will be expelled but I’m told the UK wants to retain the ability to have dialogue
