AIBU to not go and see 'Black Panther'

I have two boys, DS1 (13) and DS2 (8). Myself and DS1 are very much into Marvel/Comic books. Whereas DS2 is very into Manga.

I work as a nurse and have ridiculous shifts, I have an off day today, so I thought I would treat myself, for Mother's day, to watch, Blank panther, bringing the DC'S along.

However, being a fool, I didn't bother to check the age rating for the film. Which I believe is 12a. Would I BU to not go since it may not be suitable for DS2. Like I mentioned, DS2 isn't into Marvel (though he is into action films) and the film may not be suitable for him. But, I have been dying to see this film.

Any thoughts ? Or should I just stay at home and enjoy drinking my cup of tea ? Grin.

If you don't want to, you don't have to. But its bloody brilliant. Fine for my 8 year old as well.

I'd let an 8 year old watch a 12a.

It's a guideline, and you know your child.

That said I gave up with rating when DS was two and my dad thought Gremlins was a suitable children's film.

You could always watch it with your older child, then decide if it is suitable for your younger child and bring him along later.

I saw it last week and it would be fine for an 8 year old I think - (tiny spoilers ahead) there are some fight scenes and a bit where someone gets stabbed but it isn't gory or graphic. There was a child younger than 8 sitting next to me and they had no issues that I could see.

It's absolutely brilliant, would totally recommend anyway!

I think he would be OK with it. Show him trailers maybe see what he thinks. I know that people who aren't keen on marvel absolutely rave about this film.

(spoilers on the website but if you scroll down to the bottom of the page rates it on violence/bad language etc).

We took our two 9 year olds and a six year old last weekend. They loved it. I did too. It’s worth it for Killmonger’s shirtless scenes.

Heck, I’m just going to go. I don’t know if I don’t try. If it gets too much I’ll just leave the film.

If your DS2 is into action films then I would say it would be fine for him at 8. It contains moderate violence like other Marvel films, and a character flips the bird, but that's about it.

We went last night for my Mother’s Day treat.
I claimed it was apt for MD due to the strong female role models but it was largely due to the fact that I love Marvel films!
My 9 year old was fine, it’s not graphic or inappropriate
(And the baddy is very very hot and gets his shirt off)

I took 3 of my grandchildren, the youngest one was 8.

It was fine.

It is a brilliant film and very powerful too. Do hang around for after the credits for the usual marvel tease.

@stuckintheblastingsnow fantastic film. I would go as far as saying it's the best marvel film out there! Absolutely fine for an 8 year old too. Have fun!

Yeah you can take him, it won't affect him.

But it wasn't very good to be honest. Bit boring, and a lot of it just didn't sit right with me for some reason.

I saw it yesterday. The 12 rating will be for language ('shit' said twice), violence (multiple shootings and stabbings, not massively bloody or graphic, but fairly frequent) and what they describe as 'a rude gesture' (king's sister jokingly gives him the middle finger).

Someone was there with a 3 or 4 year old, which I did judge, as it was obvious child was bored as they were wriggly and talking. It was way too long for them, unsuitable and I can't imagine he'd have had a clue what was going on. Mainly though, it was irritating for us as we'd paid full price for 7 tickets and had to listen to him whinging!

I didn’t think it was great, but wasn’t awful violence, some big fight scenes. But then i’m not a marvel superfan. It was just another churn out the marvel type movies IMHO, yes almost all the cast were black, but I actually thought the portrayal of the Africans was very stereotypical and that sat uncomfortably with me. It also annoys me that an English chap plays the American CIA agent!

Mapluck that's a bit of a jump considering you don't know my reason.

My reasoning is the same as trinity. It was quite a stereotypical portrayal of Africans. They even had one tribe making ape noises. That was quite uncomfortable to watch considering how many white people are racist to blacks in that way by comparing them to monkeys.

I don't give a damn that most of the cast was black, that's the only way it should have been. But to use stereotypes which just reinforces what we've been trying to get past doesn't seem right to me.

But guess I'm racist for wanting to avoid going backwards.

barbaro I did actually wonder if some of the stereotyping was a bit racist, not the “monkey” noises though as that tribe had the mountain gorilla as their totem animal so I didn’t see the issue with that.
I did wonder about some things like the blind following of tradition and the whole “black power” violence but I’m white so i honestly don’t really think I can judge.
