What were Morrison's thinking?

Don't know if this is just our Morrison's, or Nationwide, but it's wrong for so many reasons...

How do they know if one's a mother or not? Is there a medical? Do the sprogs have to be in evidence?
Simply a marketing ploy, I expect a Fathers only lane later on the year, so how popular that would be!

SockMobster · 11/03/2018 11:18

So do 10 items or less checkouts discriminate against families?

No because families can still use them if they so wish, they just need to have under 10 items, as with everyone else who uses those tills.

Women who CANNOT have children cannot use the mother's days tills today. Women with medical problems who cannot have children cannot use those tills today. Can you not see how that's an issue?

tillytrotter1 · 11/03/2018 11:22

I like to see the kids with bunches of daffs and home made cards

My favourite used to be strapping teenage lads trying very hard to carry a box of chocolates through town without it being seen and losing street cred with their mates.

bookmum08 · 11/03/2018 11:26

Infact Willow2017 my brother in law works for Morrisons warehouse and his wage is not a great one and not really enough for a family to live on so my sister in law spent years working nights so my niece could be taken care. My sister in law was permantly exhausted for years. Less exhausted now because niece is older but it has affected her health.

Willow2017 · 11/03/2018 11:28

Its one till ffs.

Its one day in a year.
Its not actually going to offend anyone who isnt actively looking to be offended.
Making something especially for one group of people once a year is not discriminating against the rest of humanity.

Do you think all the fathers and grandfathers will be offendef? Should they boycott M en masse?
Stop looking for problems where none exist.

Real bona fide discrimination could do with being given half the outrage about this small gesture.

PeerieBreeks · 11/03/2018 11:28

Women who cannot have children can't get free child places. Can't get free kids meals with every adult meal purchased. Can't take advantage of free school and nursery places and free school meals. They don't get child benefit either. Are these things all discriminatory too?

I don't know what is like to not be able to have children. I know some women find it incredibly difficult, and I do sympathise.

But everyone is here as a result of a mother. And there's nothing wrong with celebrating that on one day a year.

If not being able to use a particular checkout on one day as part of that celebration is a big issue, you can change supermarkets or not shop on that day.

Presidentpoopants · 11/03/2018 11:30

I wonder how women would feel if they did “dads only” checkouts on Father’s Day? I suspect people wouldn’t think it was so nice then...

PeerieBreeks · 11/03/2018 11:32

Wouldn't bother me, I think it would be great to encourage more men to go and do the weekly shop!

ephemeralfairy · 11/03/2018 11:33

I don't get it at all. How do you 'prove' you're a mum if you don't have your kids with you?? Are you still allowed a flower if you were a mum but your child had died?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 11/03/2018 11:33

I would think that was great President and have a little smile as I queued at the next checkout. Can’t believe the spoilsport posts I’m reading here, sucking the joy out of it all.

storynanny · 11/03/2018 11:34

Re the chatty checkout assistants, I know they are probably following a script but in the co op yesterday I found it really annoying.
“Are you looking forward to Mother’s Day, are you expecting a nice present, are you being spoilt?”
No, not really, I’m a grown woman not doing anything special, just enjoying a usual Sunday. How did she know I had children, my mum died last year, my adult children live abroad and my adult step family are sad because they lost their mum when they were little.
Bit silly for shops to do this in my opinion

storynanny · 11/03/2018 11:36

Ps I’m not sucking the joy out of it at all by the way, all of the young mums in my extended family will enjoy cards from their little ones, but I’m 61 and don’t need to quizzed about my expectations from people who don’t know me!

Dermymc · 11/03/2018 11:37

Soon we'll stop celebrating anything for fear of upsetting someone.

Coulddowithanap · 11/03/2018 11:37

Blimey, it's one day! Can't believe it bothers some people so much.

FlouncyDoves · 11/03/2018 11:38

It won’t be any quicker if they’re going to allow the kids to see how the till works etc.

Willow2017 · 11/03/2018 11:38

I was pointing out the fact that not everyone working weekends are only working weekends because the cant do anything else. I am working 8 hrs today its part of my weekly hours. I get minimum wage, no breaks, no overtime. Its just life people have to work weekends.

I used to work evenings and weekends to avoid childcare. That worked for us, i didnt like it but it was necessary. Sometimes you just have to do whatever it takes.

And i do know people who are quite happy in thier supermarket job, it suits thier life, they have had promotions and are very good at thier job. I dont think "oh you work in a supermarket you must not have aspirations to improve yourself." Every job is important but i still dont think you should get time off just cos its mothers day to see your kids at work.

SisyphusDad · 11/03/2018 11:41

I'm a widowed father and have to all intents and purposes been father and mother to my kids for six years. Do I get to use it?

RedDogsBeg · 11/03/2018 11:42

No, I compare discrimination to discrimination.

Women who CANNOT have children cannot use the mother's days tills today. Women with medical problems who cannot have children cannot use those tills today. Can you not see how that's an issue?

Even by the declining standards of MN those two statements have plumbed new depths.

No, I cannot see an issue with non mothers being unable to use one till on one day of the year because they are not mothers for whatever reason.

LassWiADelicateAir · 11/03/2018 11:42

No problem with that

Oh fgs there is no need to prove anything. It is a light hearted marketing ploy which will police itself.

If my family celebrated mothers' or fathers' day (which we don't )and if we shopped in Morrison's, (which we don't )it would mean my son , buying a theoretical bunch of flowers , would not use the "mums' queue but if it were me buying a theoretical bunch of flowers I would use it.

LassWiADelicateAir · 11/03/2018 11:45

Oh get over yourself. Personally I think mothers' and fathers' days are comercialised nonsense which are actively discouraged in our home but this is not an issue.

overnightangel · 11/03/2018 11:46

Some people like OP just can’t wait to be aloffended by the tiniest thing.
If I “identify” as having a child can I jump the queue?

HolyMountain · 11/03/2018 11:47

Can you not see how that's an issue?

It’s an issue in your head, not the majority here it seems, judging by this thread.

Jenasaurus · 11/03/2018 11:48

sisyphusdad - there are lots like you and yes I think you should be allowed to. BTW - Off topic but when I saw your user id I had to double take thought it said Syphilis dad!

overnightangel · 11/03/2018 11:49

“It is a light hearted marketing ploy which will police itself.”

Exactly @LassWiADelicateAir 👍🏻

Find something important to get wound up about the folk who are twining

PeerieBreeks · 11/03/2018 11:50

To be honest, I suspect that they won't be stopping anyone from using the checkouts.

But if you don't have children why would you want to? You would most likely get asked about your children by the checkout operator, and if you are unable to have children, surely that would be worse?
