What were Morrison's thinking?

Don't know if this is just our Morrison's, or Nationwide, but it's wrong for so many reasons...

What on earth is wrong with that? Some people really do have a problem with absolutely anything, don't they?!
Morrisons, you absolute ba*ds for doing something nice! Not.
Good grief.
As someone upthread said, are we supposed to do nothing, or say anything, for fear that someone, somewhere might get upset or offended?
We'd never celebrate or do anything if that was the case.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 11/03/2018 10:32

It’s a lovely idea.

I’d love to hear some of these reasons why it’s “wrong on so many levels” though Hmm

LoveEricLove · 11/03/2018 10:32

Sock - I've had losses and will likely have a child. Other people having them has no bearing on my situation at all and won't alter it.

Same as Valentines day 2 for 1 meal deals doesn't have any bearing on the situation of a single person.

CadyHeron · 11/03/2018 10:33

A supermarket does something nice - yes, I know it's a marketing ploy, still nice though - and gets slammed for it. Some people can suck the joy out of anything.

Exactly! Not so much fun suckers, more like the human equivalent of Dementors that go around sucking joy and life out of everything!

lazyarse123 · 11/03/2018 10:34

I'm not being horrible to women who can not conceive or have had losses. I had a miscarriage many years ago and one of the hardest things was to go supermarket shopping seeing babies and toddlers and all the clothes and toys but it was my issue to deal with no one else's.

k2p2k2tog · 11/03/2018 10:35

You know this hand wringing about Morrison;s mums check out, or Frankie and Benny's mums eat free deal or O2 sending out banal reminders about the date and people getting their knickers in a knot about a hypothetical person they know, possibly, somewhere being offended is going to have on effect only.

All the companies are going to take the following stance. Fuck this. We try to tie our marketing into a festival/celebration and get some revenue is, and all you get is the professionally offended brigade cluttering up our social media. Fuck them. All bets off. Pay full price and you can fuck right off if you think we're going to allow you to request delivery on a sunday or put on a special menu for next year. And while you're at it, pull the Easter eggs off the shelves or it'll be the vegans moaning next. And ban Halloween promotions as some of the fundamental Christians have a problem with that too. And Valentine's day as it could be "triggering" for someone who's been dumped.

Seriously, lots of grips needed.

4GreenApples · 11/03/2018 10:38

I wonder if you need your children’s with you to be allowed to use the special tills.

If I was going to the supermarket today, I’d be leaving the kids home with DH if possible.

BykerBabe · 11/03/2018 10:40

Not really that harmless to the woman who's jut found out she's had another failed round of IVF, or another miscarriage though is it?

What do you want them to do the other 364 days of the year? Put the children's section behind closed shutters like they do with tobacco?

Willow2017 · 11/03/2018 10:40

Not really that harmless to the woman who's jut found out she's had another failed round of IVF, or another miscarriage though is it?

So the rest of society should pretend mothers dont exist?
I had a miscarriage but it didnt make me berate friends who had kids celebrating mothers day. Its nobody elses fault.

Its hard for someone who is struggling with infertility (been there too) and i have every sympathy for them but the world goes on we cannot change things for that person and shouldnt have to pretend that mothers aren't everywhere either.

If we thought about everything in the context of "will this upset someone somewhere who cant do this" we would never leave the house!

SockMobster · 11/03/2018 10:42

Children's section being open doesn't actually stop a woman from doing something.

Being told they cannot do/use something does because they are not a mother does.

Can you imagine if this was "only people with white skin can use this check out"?

Bet the responses would be very different.

HolyMountain · 11/03/2018 10:44

Can you imagine if this was "only people with white skin can use this check out"?

Jesus, you can't compare racism with a pr stunt at Morrison's.

LoveEricLove · 11/03/2018 10:45

Yes they would sock. Because it's completely different to what has happened here. Which is obvious.

Hookedoncatnip · 11/03/2018 10:45

"Frankie and bennies are doing mums eat free too.

The bastards that they are."

@RJnomore1 that really made me chuckle.

CadyHeron · 11/03/2018 10:47

Can you imagine if this was "only people with white skin can use this check out"?

That isn't even comparable, what on earth are you talking about?!

cucaracha · 11/03/2018 10:47

Bloody hell, I hate this patronising crap. I lost babies, many of us have. I don't expect the world to cancel MothersDay, family events, "baby event" in supermarket, Christmas and Easter whilst we are there. Life goes on, and people who can should make the most of it.

Shall we close all our restaurants/ and any entertainment place because another country is at war, kids are being starved, poisoned and blown up and it's insanely crass to to be laughing and cheerful whilst they are suffering?

fullofhope04 · 11/03/2018 10:50

First of all Flowers to all the women who don't have children and Mum's
It's a poignant day for us all; but lets celebrate our dear Mum's who are no longer with us (I'm going to light a candle for her) and treat ourselves to something.
PS - If there was a nearby Morrisons I'd be there in the 'Mother's Only' queue just for the hell of it xx

PeerieBreeks · 11/03/2018 10:50

I note the op hasn't been back with 'so many reasons'.

Having a mother's only checkout for one day doesn't stop anyone from checking out. Just like having a ten items or less checkout doesn't stop anyone from checking out.

SockMobster · 11/03/2018 10:53

Having a mother's only checkout for one day doesn't stop anyone from checking out.

Neither would having "white" check outs for one day...

Jesus, you can't compare racism

No, I compare discrimination to discrimination.

insideoutsider · 11/03/2018 10:55

Wait...
doesn't this mean there'll be massive queues on these 'mom' isles since most of the shopping will be done by moms? Confused

I think I'll pretend to be something else then if I want to get home quickly!

Rachie1973 · 11/03/2018 10:58

I think it's sweet :) It is clearly a PR thingy, but who cares.

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 11/03/2018 10:58

So what if one Mum wants a chatty relaxed scan of their shopping and the next Mum is in a rush? She's still got to wait for the chatty woman to finish!!!

PeerieBreeks · 11/03/2018 11:09

So do 10 items or less checkouts discriminate against families?

Jesus wept. Right everyone, it's time to stop doing anything nice at all for any section of society because it discriminates against everyone else.

No children's meal prices or free child places. No valentines day offers. No Christmas events lest Hindus and Jews feel left out. Oh, and let's get rid of Pride, Black History month, Eid, Hannukah and the Chinese New Year. Actually all the New Years will need to go.

Got it?

Splendid.

LoveEricLove · 11/03/2018 11:12

I have to pay all my bills on my own because I'm single. Couples only have to pay half each and (usually) have two incomes coming in so have more money.

Am I being discriminated against? No.

BykerBabe · 11/03/2018 11:16

Can you imagine if this was "only people with white skin can use this check out"?

I've hit peak virtue signalling.

bookmum08 · 11/03/2018 11:16

Willow2017 I was certainly not being patronising about Morrisons workers being mums - I was going by my almost 2 decades of retail worker. I seriously doubt you will find anyone working on a supermarket checkout as a 'career' - they do it because the need money. I worked with many people in my retail years and many of them were women juggling the 'unsociable' working hours (ie evenings /Sundays) because as a family they couldn't afford living on one wage but also couldn't afford childcare so one parent works in the daytime, one in the evening and/or weekend. Usually (not always but most often) it was the mum of the family.
