not AIBU but posting for traffic

I've fallen over about half an hour ago and heard my ankle crunch, can't put weight on it and in a lot of pain, taken paracetamol and got it raised but really am in unbelievable pain and think I need to go to A&E, my DP says i've just fallen over and i'm being silly but i'm not so He's gone to work.

I can't get a taxi and have no family here to call to drive me so how do I get to A&E? If I ring 111 can they arrange transport? The hospital is only a 2 minute drive from me but I can't walk Confused what is the best thing to do?
Sorry for asking here but my DP is useless and my family are all away

Put an appeal On Facebook local pages. I’ve often helped out people in need locally even if I don’t know them

This

We have similar pages here and I doubt taxi drivers will help you into or out of the car

rainydogday · 09/03/2018 16:31

Ambulances are for medical emergencies, usually they will put you to the bottom of the list as not life threatening. I would make your DP take you. Really can't believe you are actually considering calling 999

DalekDalekDalek · 09/03/2018 16:32

@PaperdollCartoon How am i being mean for pointing out that the OP needs to plan how to get home. I had the same issue after being taken to A&E in an ambulance and then being stuck there. It is a reasonable thing to consider. And I'm not the only person who doesn't think calling an ambulance is necessary so have a go at each of them as well.

Plus, in my first comment I said if they need an ambulance medically it is fine to call one. But it isn't if the only reason is because they can't afford a taxi.

You have twisted it. If it was broken you wouldn't be typing as you'd be in severe pain. Keep it elevated and ice it

GreenTulips · 09/03/2018 16:34

Lady at school broke her ankle and an anulance was called

They give youbpain relief and can support the ankle prior to moving you so will be less damaged and there fore save the NHS money

Zazzleza · 09/03/2018 16:34

I can’t believe how horrible people are being on here! Have all the Nasties actually ever broken your ankles/legs/arms?
I imagine OP is in excruciating pain and having difficulty walking, if being able to move around at all. Why would/should a taxi driver carry OP to the car/ to the hospital door? This is what ambulances are for.
Having helped my sister to a&e with a broken ankle I wished we had called an ambulance. It was an absolute nightmare trying to get her in the car. She’s only small but taking her weight was a real struggle. I wouldn’t expect anyone I didn’t know well to go help like that.
Call an ambulance OP. You are not wasting their time.

hurtmyankle · 09/03/2018 16:34

I called someone I used to work with as she used to drive me to work and she's on her way, 111 said it was fine to come in and they could send an ambulance car but my old colleague is on her way. ankle has swollen a fair bit and is forming a bruise underneath. Thanks for those who were honest and for all the ideas and nice messages

how do i get to A&E?

That is simply not true. Breaks are not always painful.

user1497718723 · 09/03/2018 16:35

Another vote for not calling an ambulance

petmyunicorn · 09/03/2018 16:35

Ouch. Looks sore. Hope you get seen and sorted quickly.

hurtmyankle · 09/03/2018 16:37

Just to add I never suggested I wanted to call 999, I said I DIDNT want to but I would call 111. I wouldn't call 999

I am glad you have got someone to help and it does look nasty and sore so I hope you get some pain relief soon.

Loads of luck spice rack! It could well just be a nasty sprain. Let us know what the hospital say.

Quatia · 09/03/2018 16:38

This always gets used on mumsnet you can’t have flu/broken bones/bad pain etc if you’re typing, presumably op isn’t typing with her feet, holding phone in your hand and small movements with you’re thumb does not mean she has or hasn’t broken anything.

As others have said don’t call an ambulance, ask a local Facebook group, friend, a neighbour to take you down.

Gilead · 09/03/2018 16:38

AriAliyah · 09/03/2018 16:38

You might have a broken ankle which is serious. Just call a bloomin' ambulance. Breaks which are not dealt with swiftly can lead to long term problems. You are not wasting nhs resources and ambulances aren't just for people who are dying. They will prioritise as necessary. I think people are being unfairly harsh here. A sad few who love to come online and be arsey when someone has asked a simple question!

user1497718723 · 09/03/2018 16:38

It's a sprain - mine was exactly the same last year after a fall & took a long while to go back to normal. Ice it and take ibuprofen

SaturdaySauv · 09/03/2018 16:39

Completely reasonable to have medical assistance to mobilise you and give pain relief in my view. If you were one of my patients I’d be calling the ambulance myself.

rainydogday · 09/03/2018 16:39

I am amazed how many people call for an ambulance when going into labour too! They simply "have no one at ALL" to get them there.......once the baby is born they always seem to be able to get home and have loads of visitorsHmm GP surgery sometimes do call outs or at least they do here in certain situations or perhaps phone them first?

JustVent · 09/03/2018 16:39

It’s probably (hopefully) just a bad sprain. But at least you managed to realise there was options other than an ambulance.

Good luck OP.

TheQueef · 09/03/2018 16:40

Ignore the not so helpful. Some people have honestly never been on their arse with no cash and no way to get any. It impacts everything and the knock on effects are surprising.

Good luck, hope it isn't broken.

M
That’s not true. I broke my arm as a teenager and waited until the next morning to go to A&E because my mum was out for the evening and I didn’t want to bother my grandma who was looking after us. It was painful but not so painful that I couldn’t function.

Ubercornsdiscoball · 09/03/2018 16:40

Glad you have something sorted. Ambulances are for life threatening emergencies. Not for transport when you can’t afford a taxi. (As you know OP, am not having a go). Life threatening!! Lots of you need to have a word with yourselves!

SaturdaySauv · 09/03/2018 16:40

user you can’t diagnose a sprain from a picture on the Internet. It’s clear op needs to have it xrayed.

user1497718723 · 09/03/2018 16:40

Quatia - the NHS is really struggling & doesn't need injuries that can be self medicated turning up on a Friday evening! The OP would be waiting hours and using up valuable resources.
