I haven't really bothered with any magazines for a good few years now as the only ones I can find are celeb nonsense or stuff like take a break. I don't like cosmo or glamour - far too much advertising.

I used to buy Minx and First magazines when they were out, but after First closed, I haven't been able to find one that has anything half intelligent about its content.

For anyone that doesn't remember it, First had news & current affairs, women's worldwide issues (I remember first reading about FGM here), a bit of fashion & beauty, maybe a bit of lifestyle and a TV guide.

So, can I ask what you read?

Private eye.
I'm yet to find a 'women's magazine' that isn't full of vacuous horseshit about being confident in your self while giving mind blowing blow jobs and cooking macaroni cheese on a budget.

demirose87 · 08/03/2018 15:53

I just like the real life mags like Take Break. I don't like the 'glossies" as they are adverts on every other page and a waste of money. I'm not interested in celebs either.
I also like Gurgle.

AlishaMary · 08/03/2018 15:54

I like Auto Express.

But then I’m not interested in reading about whether I’m too thin/fat/ugly/unhappy/insecure/unsuccessful/poor/uneducated/. Or celeb gossip.

Will give Private Eye a look next time I’m in an actual shop too.

GeekyWombat · 08/03/2018 15:55

Take a Break is my guilty pleasure. I don't think I'm supposed to be their demographic but I enjoy it, do the puzzles every week and even won £50 before Christmas.

I used to subscribe to Empire but that's been incredibly lame for a few years now.

New scientist is fascinating

Isn't private eye that weird American thing with made up stories and conspiracy theories?

TAB & womens own etc just have sensationalist headines and when you actually read them the stories just make you go 'meh'.

I'll google gurgle and see what that is, never heard of that before.

New scientist does look interesting!

I read Private Eye and Nature.

ViceAdmiralAmilynHoldo · 08/03/2018 16:09

Private Eye is a British satirical magazine. It lampoons conspiracy theories. Essential reading for me.

ghostyslovesheets · 08/03/2018 16:10

Doctor Who Magazine

rednsparkley · 08/03/2018 16:10

I read Woman & Home and GQ fairly regularly. Occasionally I will read The Economist. I loved the NME and Melody Maker back when I was a student.
I used to read Heat on and off but I was reading it in Tesco recently and the only person I recognised was Cheryl Tweedy.

bookmum08 · 08/03/2018 16:10

Blocks Magazine (a magazine for adult Lego fans) and various crafts magazines. Sometimes the American mag Entertainment Weekly.

CadyHeron · 08/03/2018 16:14

Used to buy all the weekly ones such as Take A Break and That's Life but lately they seem to be getting more and more ridiculous clickbait articles such as My Twin Slept With My Husband!
(Then you read the story and it's the woman from down the road who she's been besties forevAH with and they share the same haircut and look like twinnies or some shite Hmm )
Not to mention they all seem to be obsessed with child abuse/wife beating stories and that's all they seem to print Sad
Following this thread with interest as love mags but still looking for a good one that's relevant for me.
I quite like Prima.

Jaimx86 · 08/03/2018 16:15

Monthly:

  • Cosmo (my mum still buys me a subscription to this after starting to 14 years ago.
  • Women's Health
  • Top Sante
  • Women's Fitness
  • Healthy (The Holland and Barrett magazine)

Semi-regularly:
Glamour
Tatler
Marie Claire

Gottagetmoving · 08/03/2018 16:17

None.
Years ago I read quite a few but age took over and I became cynical and fed up of being told how to be better than I am Grin
I think I may try Private Eye. I love satire.

mintich · 08/03/2018 16:17

I have the readly app so now I read all sorts!

Eliza9917 · 08/03/2018 16:19

Just googled private eye, I don't want vacuous but that doesn't look like light fun reading, that looks very political. There's enough of that every where else. I just want a general magazine with interesting articles, not one filled with whatever those towie or chelsea lot are doing. Can't stand those people.

Elendon · 08/03/2018 16:21

The crossword is good though, in Private Eye.

It has a great section on local councils.

It has been sued many times, so I don't think those who sue consider it 'light reading'.

Eliza9917 · 08/03/2018 16:22

I used to get womens' running and womens' health but I don't train anymore.

I also used to get true crime/true detective etc but haven't seen/bought them for years.

There was one I used to get, not company or red, but was a bit like that but I can't remember what it was called.

OP posts:
ethelfleda · 08/03/2018 16:22

I read History Revealed and occasionally BBC history magazine

Eliza9917 · 08/03/2018 16:23

I'm looking on magazine.co.uk and just spotted 'all about history' that looks like it might be good.

Simple Things and Breathe- both really lovely

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/03/2018 16:35

I get the electronic versions free from the library and read them on my tablet.

I sometimes look at Trail (hiking and hill walking), Olive, Delicious, Good Housekeeping and BBC Good Food. If I buy a magazine, its the Sunday Times Travel magazine.

On the odd occasion that I look at something like Red, I am horrified at the advertising - it's literally about 60% adverts, 30% pictures of ridiculously expensive clothes, beauty products and accessories that they have been sent by suppliers and 10% actual content. And I don't ever even look at the adverts or pictures of clothes. And they expect you to pay £4 for it Hmm.

Carolwithane · 08/03/2018 16:35

I read New magazine. It's absolute trash and tbh I don't always know who have the "celebs" are. It's my guilty pleasure tho which I read in the bath with wine and the door locked!!! Grin
