I haven't really bothered with any magazines for a good few years now as the only ones I can find are celeb nonsense or stuff like take a break. I don't like cosmo or glamour - far too much advertising.

I used to buy Minx and First magazines when they were out, but after First closed, I haven't been able to find one that has anything half intelligent about its content.

For anyone that doesn't remember it, First had news & current affairs, women's worldwide issues (I remember first reading about FGM here), a bit of fashion & beauty, maybe a bit of lifestyle and a TV guide.

So, can I ask what you read?

I've moved recently so will have to ask newsagent to order it in too:

www.womankindmag.com/

emsmum79 · 09/03/2018 16:22

There was one I used to get, not company or red, but was a bit like that but I can't remember what it was called.

Was it Eve magazine? I loved that mag.
Now read Empire, Red, Ideal Home, BBC History.

Commuterface · 09/03/2018 16:23

I quite like Vanity Fair but it takes me ages to get through it. I don't buy it regularly though.

noodlezoodle · 09/03/2018 19:09

Oh I loved Eve as well. I also used to like the one with the multi coloured spine - was it Easy Living? Naff name but some good articles.

I've always enjoyed magazines, starting when I was small and used to get a weekly comic, then graduating to Just Seventeen and Jackie which seemed very daring at the time. It makes me sad that so many are going under or online only. One of my favourite things is reading a really good magazine in a hot bath with a chilled glass of wine, and I'm worried there won't be any good magazines left to read in the near future!

Tippz · 09/03/2018 19:13

I like to read National Geographic and New Scientist and Psychologies, and also True Crime Monthly. I also like to read guilty pleasure crap like That's Life, and Tek-a brek! (My dog ate my nose, then puked it back up, and the doctors sewed it to my arse in error... you know the type of wonderful crappy mag.... Grin )

redavocado · 09/03/2018 19:27

Stylist tends to satisfy my magazine habit now. I can't find anything that's worth the cover price and isn't full of adverts! I'm going to look into Womankind though.

I'm really surprised that no one has mentioned Scarlet yet! That was a fantastic magazine, such a shame that it's no longer published.

Tippz · 09/03/2018 19:34

@redavocado Oh I forgot SCARLETT. Did that finish then? That was a good one too.

Anyone remember EASY LIVING? I used to love that!

I subscribe to Gurgle, Red (gone downhill) and The Simple Things. Until recently, I used to buy New magazine but got to the point I don't know the 'celebs' in it or care much about Love Island!

LeighaJ · 09/03/2018 19:46

I don't read any magazines regularly.

Only if I'm going to be travelling a distance by train or plane, then I buy what I refer to as "trash magazines" like Hello! or Ok Magazine in the UK or US Weekly or People in the US. Basically magazines with no real substance just cheap, easy to put down entertainment, and I won't be bummed if I forget them on the train/plane.

LimonViola · 09/03/2018 19:47

Prog Magazine.

Sometimes get take a break as a treat but only if I'm getting a long bath to relax in! It's kinda a nostalgia thing as I grew up with my mum and then when she'd finished with the copy me reading it.

Gardeners' World and Good Housekeeping.

Archietheinventor · 09/03/2018 19:52

I used to read loads of magazines but have stopped all of them now, except for 2 relating to my hobbies. It’s quite sad I think that most of them seem to have died a death - I started with Mizz & Just 17, then loved B, Company, Cosmo, New Woman and Eve.... I think only Cosmo still exists from that lot? I read Grazia til about 18 months ago but got bored of Jennifer Aniston and Cara de - whatever her name is - so gave that up too.

I also hate the trashy celeb ones now - for a long time I used to secretly enjoy them but had an epiphany a couple of years back and realised they are just horrid and not a suitable thing to have lying about the house where my impressionable pre-teens can see them. So much misogyny and people famous for doing nothing.

Just think of all the money I am saving!

FuzzyCustard · 09/03/2018 19:52

I loved "Eve" as well. RIP!

Simply sewing. A bit niche though.

All About History is brilliant.

PossiblyPFB · 09/03/2018 20:20

Someone got me a subscription to Delicious magazine as a gift, I am a keen cook, and I have really enjoyed it!

redavocado · 09/03/2018 20:56

@Tippz Years ago now! I used to have a subscription when I was at uni because it was so hard to find. Apparently it stopped published in 2010. Looking back it seems so liberal and forward thinking! There's nothing comparable even now!

redavocado · 09/03/2018 20:58

Hello Fashion is great. It’s only £1, and as the title suggests, fashion is its’ focus - heaven!!!

There are a few pages on travel, a recipe, skin care and exercise - not many though. There’s always an interview or two with Fashion and Textile designers, and often a model too, but it’s not full of celebrity bullshit or else I wouldn’t buy it.
