I haven't really bothered with any magazines for a good few years now as the only ones I can find are celeb nonsense or stuff like take a break. I don't like cosmo or glamour - far too much advertising.

I used to buy Minx and First magazines when they were out, but after First closed, I haven't been able to find one that has anything half intelligent about its content.

For anyone that doesn't remember it, First had news & current affairs, women's worldwide issues (I remember first reading about FGM here), a bit of fashion & beauty, maybe a bit of lifestyle and a TV guide.

So, can I ask what you read?

I like Grazia. Nice mix of current affairs, fashion etc. I also like Stylist, the free magazine they hand out at the train station.

hennybeans · 08/03/2018 16:45

I like Simple Things and Inside Crochet. I tried Oh Comely, which was good but not quite for me.

MmeGuillotine · 08/03/2018 16:48

Following with interest as I used to bloody love Minx magazine and have never found another one that engages me as much. Nowadays I occasionally read Cosmo and Hello Fashion instead but am not massively enamoured with either of them tbh.

I also read All About History etc but I get them for free because I write for them every now again - one of the perks of being a historian! ;)

Eliza9917 · 08/03/2018 16:48

@BarbaraOfSeville yes its the advertising, and advertising disguised as articles (as well as subject matter) that put me off most magazines.

After looking online at all the titles I thought I'd give woman & home a go, clicked on their website and they love Lorraine Kelly, Kate Garraway & Eamonn & his wife, I can't stand them so that's a no from me.

Simple Things, Flow, Kinfolk, Cereal, Bitch and Diva.

Eliza9917 · 08/03/2018 16:51

MmeGuillotine I was so sad when it closed. Being a historian must be fantastic, I thought about becoming an archaeologist at A-Level stage.

If you don't like adverts then the magazine I recommend is Adbusters, it's devoted to challenging consumerism.

MmeGuillotine · 08/03/2018 17:01

Minx was AMAZING. It's actually a bit depressing that nothing quite so good has come along since it closed down. I mean, surely there must be SOMETHING but no.

I love being a historian - except for when I am two months past the deadline for my next book like now. I also thought about going into archaeology but opted to do History of Art instead because less muddy. It's never too late to get involved though if you still have a yearning to pick up a trowel! :)

TossDaily · 08/03/2018 17:10

New Statesman
Private Eye
Mslexia
Writers' Forum
Writing Magazine
Very, very occasionally Red or BBC Good Food.

ethelfleda · 08/03/2018 17:13

MmeGuillotine you're a historian? Will you be my new friend? Grin

History Revealed and BBC History don't have ads in them Smile

MmeGuillotine · 08/03/2018 17:16

ethelfleda Of course! Grin

Fuckoffee · 08/03/2018 17:17

I don’t buy magazines any more. I use the Press App which is free through the library. It’s brilliant. You get newspapers and magazines for free. I mainly read Runners World on there plus some music magazines. I also have a flick through beautiful home type mags when I have the time.

MakeUpMyRoom · 08/03/2018 17:17

Private Eye
Nat Geo
Singletrack
Runner's World
Spectator

I have subscriptions for all of these.

Dipitydoda · 08/03/2018 17:18

I tend to have a look at what articles interest me, so in the past few months I’ve bought , countryfile, coast, your dog and bbc history. I read the trashy ones at the hair dressers.

noodlezoodle · 08/03/2018 17:20

There is a lot of advertising in Red but they do have some good writing too. I like Vanity Fair, which is a weird mix of serious, very long articles, and total gossip. I also like The Gentlewoman, although it only comes out a couple of times a year.

Mrsfloss · 08/03/2018 17:22

There is an app called Readly which is free for a month.

It has all the magazines you could ever want.

It’s amazing.

After that it’s £7.99 a month but can be shared on lots of devices

hellokittymania · 08/03/2018 17:22

I like the kids ones that have activities in them, the travel ones sometime National Geographic or National Geographic kids. I loved the Italian magazine focus, which has a lot of questions and answer type things on different subjects, der Spiegel,

I'm not interested in the gossip ones though.

redfairy · 08/03/2018 17:27

I read Countryfile, Britain and Landscape because I trade in my Tesco Clubcard points and wouldn't normally fork out for them on a regular basis. My mum passes on her Womans Weekly and Peoples Friend which are god awful. To be honest magazines are so expensive I'd rather buy a book.

Polarbearflavour · 08/03/2018 17:27

Grazia
Marie-Claire
Red
Cosmo
Blush

I read the New Statesman too. And the magazines with the weekend Times and Guardian.

Is Glamour still going? I used to read She and 19 until they closed.

Rachyabbadabbadoo · 08/03/2018 17:37

The Week. It’s a (unsurprisingly) weekly magazine summarising all the news from around the world, film reviews, food, sport, plus a short real life story, all gathered from newspapers around the world. It’s as close to a balanced view of current affairs you can get IMO.

ALongHardWinter · 08/03/2018 17:41

Take a break and Chat of course! Grin I thought that they were essential reading for all MNers! Joking aside, the only magazines I read now are the ones that my DD picks up from her cleaning job (the office staff that buy them only seem to want the newspaper and put the mags in the reycling box). They are Weekend (free with The Mail on Saturday) and You and Event (free with the Mail on Sunday).Occasionally,I also get an 'S' mag which is free with The Sunday Express. Years ago, up until about 2005,I used to buy Woman,Woman's Own,Bella and Best but I gave up on them as they were becoming more and more sensationalist every week, a bit like Take a Break and Chat.

niceupthedance · 08/03/2018 17:51

Red
Grazia
Sometimes psychologies if I'm feeling sad
New scientist

LaurieMarlow · 08/03/2018 17:58

New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Spectator, FT magazine at the weekend. Grazia for something lighter.

Having moved away from london, I do miss Stylist.

MulderitsmeX · 08/03/2018 18:09

I like The Economist, it has interesting articles about things happening around the world.

Private eye is v funny although i dont always read it.

I swear cosmo etc has got loads thinner and less interesting over the last few years, i used to love it

Bananalanacake · 08/03/2018 18:49

Wasn't there a magazine called B, I don't know what happened to it.
