AIBU to be offended by the sentiment of this!

Jeez. It isn’t offensive. Not everything has to be so deep!

CanIBuffalo · 07/03/2018 16:53

Not offensive but I'd be having a word for thr sake of any future DILs

melj1213 · 07/03/2018 16:54

@Captainbrickbeard maybe the card is not intended to represent every mother or make assumptions about every mothers duties in the household/family but is supposed to provide an option for those families where that is the dynamic?

For some mothers this card would be offensive and assuming their role. For other mothers (myself included) this is exactly my role and so receiving a card like this would be sweet and heartfelt.

My DD is 9 and while her dad will usually take her shopping for a mother's day/birthday/Xmas gift for me this card would be something tangible that she could give for very little monetary cost.

Has nobody else ever been made a "mum's coupon book" by their child? I definitely remember making one with my siblings for my mum one year - possibly for Mothers Day or her birthday but I can't remember which - with things like "Coupon for one free hug, even in public"; "Coupon for one afternoon activity together of your choice"; "Coupon for one cup of tea made when asked"; "Coupon for one household chore done without complaining"; "Coupon for one afternoon without arguing" etc. I don't see this as being any different.

greenchica · 07/03/2018 16:58

Just want to clarify that I am not deeply offended, I posted somewhat tongue in cheek.

Perhaps 'offended' wasn't the right word, what I really feel is disappointed about all the connotations.

So yes, the issue may be small in this case but in my opinion it speaks of a wider picture and I wanted to know AIBU to feel this way

It’s better than the ‘Mum, Sorry for ruining your Vagina’ card I saw today. No prude but really!!!

IceBearRocks · 07/03/2018 17:04

My DS 9 made his own vouchers for me one year ...it was very sweet and his idea!!!!!
He's autistic so get 3 free cleaning DS bedroom was awesome as I'd hand the voucher and he'd do it....he needs to follow his rules !!!

Babdoc · 07/03/2018 17:11

I much preferred the home made cards that my kids produced. Shop bought ones tend to be a horrible mix of nauseating sentiment, risible poetry and outright sexism!
Now they're adults, my dds often buy humorous cards online, which I also enjoy.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 07/03/2018 17:19

Seriously, Getabloominmove?? That's the epitome of tasteless shit. Was it a Facebook DIY job covered in glitter? They won't get rich flogging those.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/03/2018 17:21

Why do some people thrive on looking for offence.

Trendy1 · 09/03/2018 09:42

I think it's fab. Instead of wondering if anyone will help you, you can present the token -job done! Also, my teenagers did a home made one for DH one Christmas - clean out garage, sort out loft, it was a great gift!

MarthasGinYard · 09/03/2018 09:44

It's grim

blastomama · 09/03/2018 09:47

It's not the card that is the issue, its the fact that it unfortunately is very accurate. Women (ie mothers) do far more of the drudge work. It's a fact.

TheImprobableGirl · 09/03/2018 09:49

Surely you would pick the card based on the person that is receiving it

So if your mum was a WAHM, whilst dad was a SAHD, then maybe this wouldn't be the right card for you... but if it looked like something they would enjoy then you would buy it.

Same with the cordless drill... if somebody gave my DH a drill he would look at it as though it had three heads, whereas I would love it - DH would love a massage, whereas I get too sore etc. But somebody that knows you well enough to buy a MOTHERS day card would surely know whether you would be offended or pleased and buy the card accordingly.

My own mum wouldn't be best impressed with the card doing the rounds on facebook "Happy Mother's Day... You CUNT!"
But she is going to love the one I have bought her... "I love you even though you have kept my Hogwarts Letter from me all these years"

Sassydoughnut · 09/03/2018 09:57

Do some women go around being offended by everything. This is not offensive. I'm a housewife and I'm not a house slave. I do most things with son and all the housework, decorating, shopping, social stuff etc. As well as looking after disabled father, mentally ill brother, nephew etc. If I went to work my partner would do this. I enjoy it and my partner works bloody hard.
It would be unfair to expect him to do it after being at work all day.
Most women I know are the main ones who do these things. They are demeaned by it in anyway.
On a side note, can we give a shout out to women in Iran, fighting against forced hijab. They have to cover their hair by law, which is outrageous. Very brave women. Also a shout out to the husbands, brothers, sons, fathers etc supporting them.
They are being arrested, due to having the temerity to want to wear what THEY WANT.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 09/03/2018 09:57

Happy Mother's Day...You CUNT. Seriously??

Sassydoughnut · 09/03/2018 09:58

Not demeaned by it even

blastomama · 09/03/2018 10:02

It’s better than the ‘Mum, Sorry for ruining your Vagina’ card I saw today. No prude but really!!!
It's a joke. Not funny to all of us, but to some. Nothing wrong with that!

Sockunicorn · 09/03/2018 10:24

I would love this! I do the majority of housework in our house (and DH sorts the car and odd jobs that I dont want to/cant to). Works for us and we never think of them as gender defined jobs. So I would love this and would cash them in!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/03/2018 10:44

I do see what you're saying, yes.
But for so many women, they still ARE the one doing most of those things - so it's kind of sweet their SMALL child would volunteer to take on those jobs.
Not just for one day though!

But yes, overall it's a very poorly thought through card, with all its wifework implications.

gillybeanz · 09/03/2018 11:48

It's just a card, there are some easily offended people today Sad
There are just as many comments for men when it's their turn.
You know cleaning the car, digging the garden, other typical male stuff

defectiveinspector · 09/03/2018 12:48

I think the point is that we are in 2018 and we are still saying to our children that housework is women's work. It isn't, if there are two adults in a house then cleaning it, feeding the occupants and keeping them clean is a joint task. If you decide between you for one of you to do those roles, that is entirely up to you. But, let's stop telling our children that it is expected to be the woman's role. To those of you who say my husband does the decorating and fixes the car, how does that compare to the multitude of household chores you do? It will barely come close. It doesn't matter who washes up, what matters is giving the impression to the next generation that it is expected that it should be the woman's role.

happyvalley74 · 09/03/2018 12:52

Well I have a cleaner and a dishwasher so I wouldn't be able to use all the vouchers....

greenchica · 09/03/2018 14:39

defective couldn't agree more!

good grief, no we are not. Housework is not men's work either, in some families it's 50/50, so it' s nice if the kids take care of that 50%.
It's not my favourite card, but being offended by token for "Peace and quiet", "cuddle" and "breakfast in bed" because #feminism.. really?!?

PopGoesTheWeaz · 09/03/2018 15:05

Yeah, but I'm not holding my breath for the publication of the same card (but in a mainly blue) at father's day.

I'm surprised that there isn't a voucher for the DH to give mum to redeem against "one night's babysitting so you can have a girl's night out. Go on, you deserve it!"
