to ask if I’m the only one who hates driving behind a truck or van

I am aware I likely am being unreasonable but I get the actual rage when I get stuck behind a larger vehicle. Not because they drive slowly nessecarily but because I can’t see around them! I’m just wondering if this type of road rage is totally abnormal or not.

The only time this bothers me is if I'm stuck in traffic and I can't have a nose to see what is happening!

toolonglurking · 06/03/2018 20:04

I have the opposite problem, I don't mine being stuck behind a vehicle that can't go any faster. Its the arses driving bloody Fiat 500s at 35/40 along a 60 road that annoy me.

Samantha77hat · 06/03/2018 20:06

Drop back so you can see up the road
When it is clear, drop to the lowest appropriate gear, accelerate, pull out and overtake

PerpendicularVincent · 06/03/2018 20:08

YANBU. I dislike it for the same reason as you.

I also have an irrational prejudice against cars with flat backs. Any car with a flat back is driven far too slowly.

MabelFurball · 06/03/2018 20:16

Think of the truck as your Guardian Angel. It has been put in front of you to protect you - stop you driving too fast. So you just need to sit back and relax.

Samcro · 06/03/2018 20:19

Its normal
I drive a large van .. wheelchairs accesible
And the amount of people who seem to hate being hind me is weird
They overtake dangerously often

BossWitch · 06/03/2018 20:19

You do need to drop back so you can see. If overtaking is an option, do it; if not, chill out. You can't complain about not being able to see round them if you are driving right up their arse.

DwangelaForever · 06/03/2018 20:20

I hate driving behind vans and buses cause I hate not seeing the traffic ahead!!

specialsubject · 06/03/2018 20:24

Stop tailgating and you can see past. Magic, eh?

ajandjjmum · 06/03/2018 20:26

Makes me feel claustrophobic!

ShatnersBassoon · 06/03/2018 20:27

It doesn't bother me at all. Keep your distance if you want a better view of the road ahead.

WeaselsRising · 06/03/2018 21:13

I can't stand it either. Realistically on a 20 or 30mph you can't drop back far enough to actually be able to see around it and can't overtake.

What really winds me up is the way they nip out in front of me. They never seem to get that actually I don't want to be stuck behind them when my car is practically on the floor.

PumpkinPie2016 · 06/03/2018 21:21

They don't bother me - if you drive a decent distance away from them, the view will be better even if not as good as when a car is in front of you.

With large wagons, you should try to make sure you can see their mirrors so they can see you! That way, if you do overtake, at least they know you were there!

TheCatsMother44 · 06/03/2018 21:23

It does sound like you could do with hanging back a bit from the other vehicle if it's imparing your view like that.

Efferlunt · 06/03/2018 21:25

I can’t cope if I’m driving between two large lorries. I feel like they could easily crush me and not know I’m there.

kinorsam · 06/03/2018 21:25

If you can't see round them, then you are probably driving too close and need to pull back.

To be honest I'd much rather be driving behind a truck than have one right up my tail behind me.

OxytocinAddict · 06/03/2018 21:28

I hate driving in between two lorrys on the motorway. Teffifying!

Herculesfan · 06/03/2018 21:32

Sorry I do mean when stuck in traffic. My commute is on 30mph country roads that are often backed up with traffic. I hate not being able to se if the traffic is clearing ahead/what the obstruction might be.

Thanks for the lesson though Samantha.. I’d never have worked out how to overtake without you Hmm

I have no isues with driving bhind a large vehicle. What pisses me off is when I get a large (or even a small) vehicle driving behind me so close that (a) the driver can see up my exhaust pipe or (b) it's dark and they're so close that I can't see their lights.

Samantha77hat · 06/03/2018 22:59

Describes frustration at being stuck behind a vehicle as ‘road rage’

Complains about poor forward visibility

Takes umbrage when it is suggested to overtake the vehicle in front obscuring view and then adds some previously unmentioned circumstances about why it isn’t possible to overtake

YABU and sound odd

specialsubject · 07/03/2018 12:10

get up earlier. Bet OP will really like that one!

aggressive drivers kill. One has died on our local roads overnight - happily a single vehicle collision.

itstimeforanamechange · 07/03/2018 12:19

Yes I know what you mean OP, it is annoying when you can't see what's going on in front of the vehicle in front and it's not as simple as dropping back. Funnily enough if it were, we'd all be doing it.

JanDough · 07/03/2018 12:41

"you can't see what's going on in front of the vehicle in front and it's not as simple as dropping back"

Yes it is.

Slow down, drop back, don't drive like a dick.

Was it you who drove your little Mondeo under the back of my pick up last year? Just in case it wasn't, I'll try to describe the damage.

Us: rear bumper (it's a bar one - like a bull bar at the back) bent into the bumper and will need a respray, their engine cut our spare tyre and one of the leaf spring clips broke - about £10 to replace. I swore as I was surprised!

Them: airbag broke their nose, steering wheel broke their thumb, nasty cut on their forehead and the car looked a lot like

JanDough · 07/03/2018 12:44

Oops. Here's the photo of a car looking pretty similar.

to ask if I’m the only one who hates driving behind a truck or van
maamalady · 07/03/2018 16:05

Dropping back gives you a better view of course, but absolutely does not give such a good view up the road as being behind a smaller vehicle, especially if there are hills or left-hand bends on a country road. Unless you mean to suggest the OP drops back so far that the lorry is no longer visible? At no point has the OP suggested that she's tailgating.
