AIBU - Your kettle must be broken

AIBU to not offer a drink to workmen who say this or similar 5 minutes after arriving? Angry

Angry it pisses me off! If you want a drink then ask for one, if you had given me a chance I would have offered you one but not 5 minutes after you turn up while you are still unloading the van and haven't even started doing anything! Angry

I always offer a choice of tea, coffee, cold drinks. I make sure I have biscuits in, I've even made homemade soup for workmen in the past when they were working on the garage in horrible weather!

So it's not like I'm mean when it comes to that sort of thing, comments like that just get my back up and then I don't want to offer them anything! So AIBU to reply "yes it must be" and then not offer a drink?

That’s pretty rude and would get my back up too. I wonder if they’d say the same to a man (I’m assuming you are a woman, apologies if not!)

Pringlemunchers · 06/03/2018 13:21

Bloody cheek !! Why do they think you are there to wait on them !!!!

CuntentWarning · 06/03/2018 13:22

Unbelievably rude

Idontdowindows · 06/03/2018 13:23

I would actually say what you wrote: "I always offer a choice of tea, coffee, cold drinks. I make sure I have biscuits in, I've even made homemade soup for workmen in the past when they were working on the garage in horrible weather!" but then add "but because you're a rude fucker you can sort yourself out now and not with my things."

And then tell his mates that Rudey McRudearse is the reason they can fuck off and do their own teas somewhere.

whoareyoukidding · 06/03/2018 13:25

Yes that would piss me off too if a workman said that to me - and I also always offer a drink.

CavoliRiscaldati · 06/03/2018 13:26

YANBU

It would piss me off too! I'd be tempted to go with a short answer "yes it is, how do you know" and leave it at that.

Some family members are just like that, you are barely through the front door and haven't even taken off your coat that they are asking if you want a tea. It's nice, but come on, give me a minute, I haven't even walked in the room let alone sat on the sofa yet!

I was asked similar once and they all got black coffees, because that's what I had in. I was asked during a "no obligation" quote for Windows. I don't drink milk so don't keep it in

GooodMythicalMorning · 06/03/2018 13:28

Dm says this. It winds me up. She will have about 20 cuppas a day. Yes its rude.

bigbluebus · 06/03/2018 13:33

What a cheek! If I've got workmen who are here all day, they wouldn't be offered a drink until they'd done at least an hour's work. I only make drinks mid-morning, lunchtime and mid-afternoon in normal weather conditions. If it is someone just coming to repair something or fit something, who might only be here for 1-2 hours then they'll be offered straight away - but I'd expect them to drink it whilst working and not take a break.

HangtheblessedDJ · 06/03/2018 13:36

I'd have just laughed it off and made a brew. They're probably just having a bit of a laugh with you, while asking for a Brew

myusernamewastakenbyme · 06/03/2018 13:41

Id have just laughed it off too....I think making workmen drinks is no big deal and they might be inclined to do a better job if they are not thirsty and hungry.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 06/03/2018 13:44

I've never had a workman ask for a cup of tea, ever. I obviously don't look particularly nice friendly.

SwarmOfCats · 06/03/2018 13:44

I’d have likely called them cheeky buggers then stuck the kettle on. They’re likely just having a joke with you!

CavoliRiscaldati · 06/03/2018 13:44

Its not big deal to make them a drink, it's not even a big deal to ask politely, but the "broken kettle" comment is rude and piss taking.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 06/03/2018 13:45

I always make one, btw. Just when I decide to Grin

Lethaldrizzle · 06/03/2018 13:45

Be thankful you're not married to the twat! Imagine what he's like to his wife

Hoppinggreen · 06/03/2018 13:46

I would have responded “ yes it is broken, what a shame”

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 06/03/2018 13:46

I had
Him “can you hear that?”
Me “what?”
Him “I thought I just heard your kettle turning on, love”

I made him one cup of tea and never spoke to him again for the rest of this job (2 weeks). Dickhead.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 06/03/2018 13:48

Yes I'm female, and the workman seems to be stuck in the 40s and very sexist

I've had it said in the past and again this morning, different people, it just really got my back up

Since posting this I've heard "God I feel sorry for her poor non-existent husband, I bet he doesn't have his tea on the table when he gets home" Angry

They can sod off if they think they are getting anything from me! Angry

OP posts:
CircleSquareCircleSquare · 06/03/2018 13:48

And btw I usually make copious amounts of tea and buy them cakes but I was breast feeding my newborn and they could see I was busy. He hadn’t been in the door for more than 5 mins.
I didn’t appreciate it one bit.

anxious2017 · 06/03/2018 13:48

We only drink water so don't keep in tea, coffee etc. Workmen must be very disappointed coming to my house if they expect to be given tea!

mommybear1 · 06/03/2018 13:49

Ignore and don't offer one. I, like you always accommodate trades when having work done as another poster said you hope it will mean you get a good job. From bitter experience post renovation I only now offer if the weather is bad / they are nice - comments like the one you have had will render them drinkless in my house Grin

Jaxhog · 06/03/2018 13:49

Reply with a raised eyebrow: 'along with all my builders mugs, milk, sugar and biscuits'

TellMeItsNotTrue · 06/03/2018 13:51

Yes if they had said "do us a favour, could you make us a drink while we unload the van" I wouldn't have minded
