To think the PTA selling alcohol in school is inappropriate?

There are wine tasting evenings, gin nights etc. at school fundraising events all over the country. Does anyone else feel it's wrong? Shouldn't schools main concern be good role modelling and the health of our children? Isnt it a bit off for local councils to give temporary alcohol licenses to schools?

Yabu.

What next? No cake sales? Because of the high sugar...

HeyRoly · 06/03/2018 10:10

The only reason I go to the summer fete/Christmas fair is for the prosecco and mulled wine.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2018 10:10

I think it's fine. It raises money for the school, for the children.
I'm not a heavy drinker but enjoy the occasional dabble, that will remain the same whether I do it at a school fundraiser, at home, or at a restaurant. The only one that wouldn't be in view of my children in fact would be the school fundraiser!

Pumpkintopf · 06/03/2018 10:11

Unless you're volunteering with your pta and suggesting other fundraising options I'd suggest you find something else to worry about .

NoSquirrels · 06/03/2018 10:13

Wine tasting evenings and gin nights aren't going to have the children present, so it's not modelling anything to them - they're not there. Unless you're also going to disagree with nights out without children in general, in which alcohol might be consumed.

YABU

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 06/03/2018 10:15

They stopped this at our school- now we struggle to get anyone to turn up to anything or have to waste money hiring another venue.

MatildaTheCat · 06/03/2018 10:16

Are the children invited? Does th school urgently need additional funds? Have you come up with a better fundraising idea and auctioned it?

FlaviaAlbia · 06/03/2018 10:16

As long as they're not selling it to the children at break times, I think you should unclench, and I'm speaking as someone who rarely drinks more than a glass of wine every couple of weeks.

The "school" doesn't organise fundraising events with alcohol involved, usually - the PTA/Friends do.

I really cannot see how "the health of our children" will be improved by banning TENs for the sale of alcohol at school fundraisers. Y

CuboidalSlipshoddy · 06/03/2018 10:16

No, I don't think it's wrong.

I'm slightly more internally censorious about PTA events at which children are present, like fetes, being opportunities for people to drink. But even then I recognise it's not rational: children will be attending any number of events and venues at which adults are drinking, and I think imbuing schools with some magical aura isn't sensible.

ThymeLord · 06/03/2018 10:18

YABU. What is it modelling to children? That sometimes adults socialise together and taste nice wine, or gin? Why is that a problem?

KakunaRattata · 06/03/2018 10:18

What do they say when you raise this at the PTA meetings you attend?

x2boys · 06/03/2018 10:18

Meh my son's school is an RC school its next to a church and in the church grounds is a social club with a bar school fairs are usually held in the social club I find a glass of wine helps tbh.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 06/03/2018 10:19

YABU. Parents drinking responsibly is a good role model. They’re not exactly selling them a can of Super Tenants and a bag of spice and leaving them in the gutter are they?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 06/03/2018 10:19

x2boys Catholics always have the best parties.

HPandBaconSandwiches · 06/03/2018 10:20

I’m in Australia. Our school has a bar for all functions where parents are invited. 😁

SandyDenny · 06/03/2018 10:20

Unless parents are forced to take part I don't see the it's a problem. I don't drink but don't see a problem with others doing so in moderation.

Personally I don't believe in trying to shield children from alcohol, tobacco, violence, sex and drugs and rock n roll. Growing up with a healthy knowledge of the dangers is way better imo

NotTakenUsername · 06/03/2018 10:21

YABU, the best PTA fundraisers I’ve attended were in the pub.

enjoyingscience · 06/03/2018 10:22

It's fine. If the head was pedalling legal highs round the back of the bike sheds I'd be worried, but a glass of wine is fine.

Trinity66 · 06/03/2018 10:22

YABU chill out

BadLad · 06/03/2018 10:23

blastomama · 06/03/2018 10:23

Unless its in school hours with the children present I don't see the problem.

It’s a big money maker at a time when schools have no money...
