To think the PTA selling alcohol in school is inappropriate?

There are wine tasting evenings, gin nights etc. at school fundraising events all over the country. Does anyone else feel it's wrong? Shouldn't schools main concern be good role modelling and the health of our children? Isnt it a bit off for local councils to give temporary alcohol licenses to schools?

What about the tombola, that's gambling.....

We have a bottle tombola, its addictive! You'd be clutching your peals no doubt Op Grin

No alcohol at all at our school.

If only there was a Quaffsted I could report it to. Sad

Crikey all out PTA events are booze-fuled. We bring bottles to the beetle drive. Pimms at the sports days.
In fact, the village pub opens early on the last day of each term so we can all go and toast the holidays. Blush

Quaffstead. Grin

I highly doubt anyone is hammered dancing on the tables trying to shag the head teacher at a pta wine tasting or gin night tbh!

We aren't allowed to sell alcohol at our PTA events because apparently "there were incidents" at events run by the previous PTA where alcohol was served Confused

I wonder if the OP is coming back....?

Ive read everything now. Op yabvvvvu here. I hope you are helping with fundraising and not being such a negative person. I bet you ban fun and cakes if you could

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/03/2018 22:44

imagine how boring events at the school would be with out a little tipple.
Would have to sneak in a few minis in me handbag.

Thank good DD has moved up to High school with none of this PTA rubbish. Her primary seemed to develop a fund raising strategy which meant each class ran a stall which inevitably was a tombola. We all know is basically like selling crack to kids. I would far rather have spent my cash on booze, in fact a lot of us did in the cricket club next door to get over it. Money lost to the PTA.

The best way to raise money is to ask for it. PTAs unfortunately get hung up on "involvement" and other phrases. For example, it's routine to see cakes at cake sales being sold for less than the price of the ingredients, never mind the value of the fuel and labour. When you point this out - and yes, I have been a member of the committee of fund-raising organisations, thanks - you get stuff about how just asking for the money isn't "inclusive" or "involving" or "fair". Which is fine, but you don't then get to complain you're not making the money.

The PTA-thing at the secondary school my kids were at just asked parents for money. Nicely, and saying what it would be used for (which it was), but they organised enjoyable events which weren't fund-raising, and they faised funds, which wasn't at enjoyable events. And they raised a lot of money, because the parents who couldn't afford it didn't give it, and those that could, did, usually in amounts rather more than the sale price of a home-made cake.
