To think the PTA selling alcohol in school is inappropriate?

There are wine tasting evenings, gin nights etc. at school fundraising events all over the country. Does anyone else feel it's wrong? Shouldn't schools main concern be good role modelling and the health of our children? Isnt it a bit off for local councils to give temporary alcohol licenses to schools?

Yabu. Pimms at the summer dos and mulled wine for the winter ones make them bearable to go to. Genius. If anything, it should be compulsory to serve booze at school money gathering events. And parents evening especially for the teachers

Also on the licencing - the school won't have one. When we run these we apply for a temporary licence. Well, the PTA doesn't apply, an individual has to apply as organisations can't be licensed. There's a fee to pay, and the Police do a quick check to make sure you've not got a string of convctions for selling booze to pre-schoolers. There are also conditions - the licence holder is not allowed to drink at all during the event.

We have so many parents at school who are lawyers, police officers or connected with education in some capacity that we wouldn't ever dare to contravene the terms, it would just mean a refusal of any further licence.

k2p2k2tog Do you live in Dismalland

No, just outside Glasgow. But the Scottish Government are on a bit of an anti-alcohol crusade at the moment with minimum pricing and so on. We'd never be allowed to sell wine at sports day or mulled wine at a CHristmas Fayre, unless it was on a Friday with no kids present.

TBH it's not that much of an issue as most of our events were Friday nights anway like quizzes, ladies nights or christmas fayres. It just means we have to explain to people that "over 18s only" means that no, you can't bring your toddler in the pushchair, a babe in arms or even your 16 year old who looks about 25.

Gladisgood · 06/03/2018 11:33

Actually, I think you are wrong, OP

As a foster carer I asked for policy on this and was told that it was great for my foster DC to see adults who were capable of drinking in moderation. It gave them a better role model of how to deal with alcohol themselves. Because they will inevitably have to as they grow up. They see that when driving, one adult stays completely sober ( and also has fun )

Assuming your PTA events aren't all about the adults getting totally wasted and then throwing up, I think you can relax!

Nelly1727 · 06/03/2018 11:36

It is all to raise money for the benefit of the school and pupils. No issue with it at all.

You sound like a ball of fun, OP!!

rjay123 · 06/03/2018 11:42

Looking forward to the newspaper article on this

MrsPreston11 · 06/03/2018 11:44

YABU.

The kids aren't really at the things where the parents drink at our school.

Plus - booze makes money!

FucksakeCuntingFuckingTwats · 06/03/2018 11:45

Yabu, their main focus is to raise money.

gingergenius · 06/03/2018 11:48

If there are no children there, that's fine. However our PTA recently decided to have a bar at our school discos. Consequently at the last one, there were a large number of dads (who'd never been there before) stood gulping down Fosters. I don't think it creates an appropriate atmosphere. Also we had a problem with a dad who'd drank to much at my ds's leavers do and started arseing around .

user789653241 · 06/03/2018 12:04

MissEliza, your school sounds totally wrong tbh. I thought having a disco is for children to enjoy without parents!

MissEliza · 06/03/2018 12:19

Thanks Irvine it's nice to know I'm not the only one to think that.

Theresasmayshoes11 · 06/03/2018 12:22

Who would bother to go without alcohol? All our went to church schools and the vicar always had a good tipple. You sound hard work

Willow2017 · 06/03/2018 12:42

Unless they are giving it to the kids at lunchtime get a grip.

They need to attract adults in to make money its really quite simple to grasp. Its not like they are inviting them in to get sozzled and trash the school!

icepop9000 · 06/03/2018 15:00

We wouldn't make half as much money without it!! Frankly schools need every penny they can get at the moment.
If you don't agree then don't buy...simple!

Madasahattersteaparty1749 · 06/03/2018 17:35

Our PTA events which we have alcohol at have a far higher attendance.

MongerTruffle · 06/03/2018 17:38

I would prefer if schools didn't (there is no safe level of alcohol consumption), but at a time when I have to buy my own Pritt sticks for my class, I feel that they don't have a choice.

gingergenius · 06/03/2018 18:51

Does anyone else feel it's wrong?

Clearly not!!!Grin

greenbeansqueen · 06/03/2018 19:21

We have a bar in a separate area away from kids for school disco and movies nights which are always on Fridays. Parents mingle in the ‘bar’ area while kids watch movie in the assembly hall. It’s necome a bit of a social thing, both parents quite often go

  • hat wouldn’t happen if there was no bar. It would be one parent taking theirs and probably another 2 or 3 kids as a favour. And they aren’t going to raise much money on the £2 a kids ticket.
LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 06/03/2018 19:25

The beer tent at our school summer fair apparently makes a killing. That’s not to say people get roaring drunk I’ve never seen anyone drunk at those events anyway.

The PTA work their arses off and ours know what works and what doesn’t. Good for them. The money raised by all parents and teachers and the ones who have organised it all help make the school a better place.
