To think the PTA selling alcohol in school is inappropriate?

There are wine tasting evenings, gin nights etc. at school fundraising events all over the country. Does anyone else feel it's wrong? Shouldn't schools main concern be good role modelling and the health of our children? Isnt it a bit off for local councils to give temporary alcohol licenses to schools?

@Gladisgood the tging is, you can control what you drink. Others may not. I think a few drinks is fine but our school has a trolley full of booze and that seems a but much

Italiangreyhound · 06/03/2018 19:52

at the summer fair! Not just at school I mean!

user789653241 · 06/03/2018 21:14

Italian, but do the parents actually get drunk and cause issue at your school's summer fair?

Theresasmayshoes11 · 06/03/2018 21:19

there is no safe level of alcohol consumption

Er there is!!

MaisyPops · 06/03/2018 21:35

Seems a bit Hmm to have an issue.
I'm almost teatotal these days (been TTC for ages and haven't really missed it) and can't help but think being wound uo abiut some beer ad fizz is a bit silly.

It's hardly promoting binge drinking.

blastomama · 06/03/2018 21:36

there is no safe level of alcohol consumption

There isn't just a safe level, there is a positively healthy level.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 06/03/2018 21:41

Oh FGS, YABsoU.

They're not selling crack to the children, they're selling alcohol, a legal substance, to the adults.
Or do you think parents just shouldn't drink?

RainbowGlitterFairy · 06/03/2018 21:42

YABU. how else do you think they are going to trick get parents into these crappy things?

CadyHeron · 06/03/2018 21:42

Meh.
It's raising money for the school, what's the problem?
Should they have no cake sales either because it encourages obesity?
Fun way to raise money that people actually enjoy.
Now if you'd said they were making the kids neck it or the parents were sat around getting pissed and lairy, I could see your point.

blue25 · 06/03/2018 21:43

No YABU. There are often religious objections at our school from certain parents, but quite rightly these are ignored. Alcohol is provided for adults and is very popular. It's not for the children!

PoohBearsHole · 06/03/2018 21:45

We have paid events where adults bring their own booze. thrg do t but if but they wouldn't come without it. They also are the nights where some show off boozer will buy a question answer at a quiz for a ridiculous amount. Win win, Pritt sticks purchased Smile

PoohBearsHole · 06/03/2018 21:46

I hate predictive text as I've now forgotten what I was saying .....

Ellendegeneres · 06/03/2018 21:48

Yabu.

I wouldn’t bother with the summer fete if I knew they weren’t selling Pimms. I rarely drink, so I look forward to necking a few and telling ds I cant walk because I’m pissed my crutches have gone wonky and they need a rest at home 😂

Theresasmayshoes11 · 06/03/2018 21:50

Roses unclench seriously a few glasses a few times a week is actually fine. My poor tee total mum is 87 and had altzimers. I wish she had enjoyed a few and gone at 75.

Life isn’t black and white statistics

SweetMoon · 06/03/2018 21:54

Goodness no it's not inappropriate! It's essential. Have you lost your mind?

Cherryminx · 06/03/2018 21:56

As a PTA veteran of many years I can say that the only things that actually raise money at school events are either gambling (raffles, tombola etc) or booze related or selling sweets to kids. Almost everything else is more trouble than it is worth financially, although may be fun for the kids/ school community etc.

The only alternative would be to say to everyone - stuff the PTA, suggested donation is £20 per child per year and we will do something for the school with it.

Farmerswife36 · 06/03/2018 21:58

Omg get off your high horse. Your not the morality police . Jesus live and let love . If it's raising money for the school then what's the problem? It's not illegal !

WineAndTiramisu · 06/03/2018 22:01

MongerTruffle
I would prefer if schools didn't (there is no safe level of alcohol consumption)

Pretty sure there is...

ForalltheSaints · 06/03/2018 22:02

If schools had adequate funding then schools would not need a PTA for fundraising. So perhaps it is not the schools you should be critical of.

glenthebattleostrich · 06/03/2018 22:04

Hmm, in our PTA we make about £1200 for a summer fete which takes huge amounts of organising. Or £750 for a gin tasting event which takes a couple of hours.

We do both but it's the adult events which bring in the money.

SunshineOutdoors · 06/03/2018 22:14

There’s a pimms tent at dc’s school sports day Shock

It’s fab, everyone picnics, some people even bring their own wine or beer and everyone has a lovely time supporting and watching their children. Everyone manages not to get wildly drunk and remain looking after their children safely. I think the small amount of pimms in each cup probably turns a good profit.

By the way this is an event held off school grounds after school on a nearby grassy area and I think does well in raising much needed funds. The Pta work so hard running a bbq too and I think it’s fab as families really socialise and the school has a great community spirit.

SunshineOutdoors · 06/03/2018 22:14

Did I mention I think it’s fab Grin

wheresmyphone · 06/03/2018 22:17

Ours does loads and we are at a Methodist school 😀

TittyGolightly · 06/03/2018 22:18

Christ. We’re not allowed to sell sweets or cake, never mind booze!
