AIBU to not tip?

Why do we feel the need to tip waiters/waitresses and hair dressers but not other workers on the lowest wage?

I agreed with tipping before their pay was brought in to line with the NMW (as it was at the time) but now it feels wrong to tip them but you don't tip the cleaner who cleaned that restaurant who is on the same wage.

AIBU? Who do you tip and why?

I am paid for taking your order, bringing your food etc. I am not paid for taking an interest in your birthday, your childs new shoes or your MIL's hip operation. Thats what people who say "I am not tipped for doing my job" dont get

No,I'll never get the fact that you fake an interest in being only interested in people and nice if it means they have the means to be paying for the privilege.
I used to work as a waitress. I'd be nice to everyone.Regardless of whether they could tip or not. Tips are nice, sure, but not expected. I didn't suck up to the ones with money and feign faux interest as it's outside of my job description of taking your order to do anything beyond the basics.
Hmm

If you want to read about a truly scandalous abuse of tipping in a restaurant, hence read the story below.

If you don't want to tip, then don't, but don't be surprised when, on your return visit, your server simply fulfils their paid duties, and nothing more
Thats absolutely fine by me. I couldn't care less if the server takes an interest in my birthday or whatever.

Then you are the minority. Most want over and above levels of service whilst paying the bare minimum. They are often the same people who expect top quality food when eating a "2 for £7" job, you get what you pay for!

noeffingidea · 10/03/2018 21:32

Pyongyang how do you know I'm in the minority? What do you mean by 'over and above levels of service'? I would imagine most people just want their order taken and their food brought to them, in a pleasant and polite manner without the need for small talk. Can't ever remember experiencing anything else in a restaurant.

noeffingidea · 10/03/2018 21:35

Or is this like hairdressers who ask you about your holidays? Believe me, plenty of people could do without that.

Seniorcitizen1 · 10/03/2018 21:58

I never tip ever

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/03/2018 16:03

Spending years in the hospitality industry in a variety of settings, thats how! I have experienced first hand how the vast majority of customers think they are entitled to higher levels of service than they are prepared to paying for. Then loudly proclaim how they never tip as no one tips them for doing their job, whilst ignoring the fact that htey expect me to do more than what I am paid to do!

noeffingidea · 11/03/2018 16:40

pyong could you be more specific? I'm just interested in what you do other than take orders, bring the food and be polite and pleasant that you think entitles you to be paid more by the customer?
I've worked in customer facing positions before and being polite and friendly was a minimum requirement really.

noeffingidea · 11/03/2018 16:47

To put it another way, what are these 'higher levels of service' that you claim the vast majority of customers believe they are entitled to?

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/03/2018 16:49

Well that's absolutely fine because most people would file that sort of stuff as none of your business and certainly wouldn't pay extra for nosy comments from their server. Good service is inobtrusive, not waiting until people have put food in their mouths to do the checkback, or interrupting or taking part in the conversation at the table.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 11/03/2018 17:29

I hate tipping. I expect a decent level of service because that's a server's job, but I prefer waitstaff to be polite and efficient rather than over-attentive. I also consider politeness and promptness to be part of a server's job, regardless.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/03/2018 12:45

Agree with your post, BarbaraofSeville, the quoted part of that post made me cringe so hard. I think the poster is confusing herself with the role of 'paid escort', I can only imagine the level of customer confusion and disappointment if they're confronted with waiting staff like that. It doesn't speak of 'experience' to me, just an over-developed sense of entitlement.

I don't want or expect more than TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain describes and that is already 'paid for'.
