Broken down motorists and no booze

Justwanttosayplease · 02/03/2018 18:50

Cut to the chase. Live remotely on a hill and the drive runs down to the main road, which is starting to clog up due to an awesome snow storm and we are a long way either direction to neighboring towns. The fires are lit (we have two, not a stealth boast just frickin cold) and the house looks warm and inviting from the road. Have had stranded motorists before and put them up for the night. Big problem - no booze.

What can we do?

Plus, you say that like it’s a bad thing

I guess my friends just never really talk about it. But that's probably just my particular social circle. I do only speak to about 13 of the 70,000,000 people in Britain with any regularity.

rothbury · 02/03/2018 19:45

Do you have chocolate? Can you make MJ Brownies? That will aid proceedings.

Surely a proper Scotsman never leaves the house without a wee dram?

Sort the wheat from the chaff OP. You only want deserving stranded motorists.

And goats obviously...........

crunchymint · 02/03/2018 19:46

Sure ginger. If we were snowed in we would run out of milk before booze.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 02/03/2018 19:46

Yes I’m another totally miffed there is no random ouzo, Barbados rum or other holiday / Christmas gifts. Rectify this next year!

Doesn’t every house of grown ups have a well stocked spirits cupboard and a min of 3 bottles of wine in at all times?

Well the men tend to take them and hid them behind the books in the library. Now there is an opportunity......let me look behind the coarse fishing selection.

PERF My DP doesn't drink alcohol so it is all for me - and friends as well You married well nods wisely

My late darling husband was a very light drinker i think he must have had some English blood in him 😁 so I had to do most of the drinking before it went off. 😉

No. I almost never have alcohol in the house. I have enough food and drink to feed a regiment for a fortnight though. I'd bloody love to be able to take in a load of freezing motorists, it would justify my overfilled pantry (tis not overfilled because of the weather, I just have a fear of running out of food). And my spare sleeping bag supply, portable gas cookers, and about a hundred other things that will honestly be needed one day when I will be the only person who has any.
There hasn't even been a flake of snow here so far, so it looks like I'll have to wait.

blueskyinmarch · 02/03/2018 19:50

We are Scottish. DH has 8 bottles of whisky. We are very hospitable!

iklboo · 02/03/2018 19:51

I've got red wine, Kraken rum, whisky and several gins (some don't have much left in the bottle but it's enough for a large measure at least). There's some blackberry gin in the pantry, some sambucca and some weird Greek thing my folks brought me back when they went to Kavos by mistake the other year.

DiegoMadonna · 02/03/2018 19:51

Actually I don't know why I picked out the alcohol obsession as the surprising thing about this thread when OP has said she lets STRANGERS SLEEP IN HER HOUSE.

That must be a rural person thing.

blueskyinmarch · 02/03/2018 19:51

But literally no milk.

PositivelyPERF · 02/03/2018 19:52

Justwanttosayplease · 02/03/2018 19:53

Mumsnet at its best.

You shall all me honoured, in the New Year's Honour list, which coincides with my birthday, for the following actions.

  1. For services to 'The Discovery of two Bottles of Tia Maria' in the cupboard in the dining room by the fire.
  1. For services to 'Searching the Fridge' and finding two bottles of Prosecco left over from New Year.
  1. For services to 'Thinking of Others in Need of a Wee Dram' and sacrificing the collection because it is appropriate to do so.

You are all honoured, this evening.

No shame! You're a genius after all Grin

@Diegomadonna

When I was born all the men in my family went to wet my head (Celebrate with alcohol). As in the bible.
Then I was christened with bread and wine.
Every week at church we had bread and wine.
Jesus made water in to wine.

Now as a Madonna are you telling me God and Jesus were sending me down the wrong path?

Here's little old me feeling all righteous that I'm following in their foot steps and raising an hourly glass to them.

Justwanttosayplease · 02/03/2018 19:54

Be honoured. Flipping auto-correct.

By me. So me honouring. Kind of thing.

I grew up in the back of beyond and it would have been considered incredibly bad manners not to help out strangers. I live in town now and went out with my three boys to help dig out stranded motors on our road a few years ago. It was great fun and it’s lovely to know you’ve helped someone get home.

Blackteadrinker77 · 02/03/2018 19:59

I have at least 8 bottles of gin, some Jim Beam, Armagnac, dry sherry, Madeira, around a dozen bottles of wine and some beer and cider. None available for motorists though, I will be needing it to blot out the misery of being snowed in with my whole family. Well, the gin, wine and beer anyway, the rest is for cooking with. Grin (I'm Irish as it happens.)

Justwanttosayplease · 02/03/2018 20:03

OMG....you are not going to believe this! Shock

I've just had a rummage in the cupboard and I also have some really old Lidl version of Baileys and some Creme de Cassis, either of those could be made available to stranded motorists.

Blackteadrinker77 · 02/03/2018 20:05

DRUMROLL FOR JUSTWANTTOSAYPLEASE

QuietNinjaTardis · 02/03/2018 20:06

And this is why I love Mumsnet. A thread to warm the cockles of the heart. It’s got everything, kindness to strangers, banter, someone bitching and alcohol. Can’t go wrong Wine
