Broken down motorists and no booze

Cut to the chase. Live remotely on a hill and the drive runs down to the main road, which is starting to clog up due to an awesome snow storm and we are a long way either direction to neighboring towns. The fires are lit (we have two, not a stealth boast just frickin cold) and the house looks warm and inviting from the road. Have had stranded motorists before and put them up for the night. Big problem - no booze.

What can we do?

Are all British people as obsessed with alcohol as mumsnetters are?

PositivelyPERF · 02/03/2018 19:40

I have red wine, whisky, port, prosecco, rum, baileys and a few bottles of holiday type liqueurs in the cupboard. We are always stocked up

I’m quite emotional after reading that. I think I’ve found my virtual soulmate. 😍

Yes

DH was nearly stranded in another snowdrift, 10 years ago, but remembered a back route home. He had taken delivery of a posh whisky order at the office that day so it was in the car with him. He saw a traffic queue forming, detoured to the safety of home, but more or less everyone who didn't was in the church hall. He's always reckoned he would have been the most popular man in the room that night.

Applesandpears23 · 02/03/2018 19:41

Doesn’t every house of grown ups have a well stocked spirits cupboard and a min of 3 bottles of wine in at all times?

Schlimbesserung · 02/03/2018 19:41

Surely the butler has a stash of booze (given your address and all)?

gingergenius · 02/03/2018 19:41

@Justwanttosayplease with some potatoes and a pressure cooker I'm fairly sure you could rustle up some suburban moonshine???? Just add some chia seeds and cranberries and BAM! You have a new hipster micro-brewery business into the bargain!!!!

And if this takes off I will total claim ownership of the idea!!!
I'm actually quite disappointed I'm stuck indoors with 3 kids and not a sniff of excitement at a stranger's door.

I may need to step away as an possibly slightly over invested now. I don't get put much! 😬

crunchymint · 02/03/2018 19:41

PERF My DP doesn't drink alcohol so it is all for me - and friends as well.

I had an awesome holiday which involved being unseasonably snowed into a well stocked Alpine hut by 5 feet of snow. Some of it was offered complimentary for passing the time shovelling. Between that and going on the Trans-Siberian within the same trip, I think I consumed a decade's worth of spirits in a week. It was a brilliant trip. AI has nothing on it.

I've now got Hotel California rattling around in my head Grin

Maryann1975 · 02/03/2018 19:42

I’m silently weeping into the drink I don’t like (dry white wine). I’ve run out of my favourite spirit although I have the correct mixer to go with it (coke) and I’ve got the second favourite spirit but no lemonade to go with it. Sad
And I deserved a good drink tonight after two snow days the week after half term. I’m going to have to go out to the supermarket tomorrow, regardless of the weather to rectify this problem.

randomuntrainedcuntowner · 02/03/2018 19:42

My last postcode ended in 1AA. I convinced myself it's because I live in the premier post code of the area...

My soul mate would only have the empties in the recycling bin covered with normal recycling so the neighbours don't see Grin

crunchymint · 02/03/2018 19:42

A friend lives in a 3 bedroom semi detached house and has a 350 bottle wine cellar - not totally fully stocked, but there is plenty in there.

gingergenius · 02/03/2018 19:42

@DiegoMadonna you do know we talk about it far more than we do it. It's a verbal meme!

PositivelyPERF · 02/03/2018 19:42

BRITISH! British indeed!

Have you ever seen the weather in the UK and Ireland? We need to do something to fill the time. Plus, you say that like it’s a bad thing! 🤔

Not mine. Neither my OH or I drink spirits, and on the odd occasion we feel like having wine, we buy it at the time we want it.

There's usually a few beers in the fridge but that's about it really.

@DiegoMadonna this really is Lighthearted. Honest!

crunchymint · 02/03/2018 19:44

We have a spirits cupboard and actually have more in it than I posted above. About 12 bottles, always have a couple bottles of red, and about 4 bottles of cava, prosecco or champagne in the fridge.

gingergenius · 02/03/2018 19:44

@crunchymint can I be their new BFF????

MrsWembley · 02/03/2018 19:45

Strangely enough, Diego, MN swings both ways - you will easily find a long running thread for those who have given up and want to help others on the path to sobriety.

However, in this neck of the woods, DP was contemplating going to Waitrose this afternoon as we have run out of bread and white wine - as he declared sadly, "I only have a bottle of champagne!" We're having fish and chips for tea, so I'm sure he'll cope...

Justwanttosayplease · 02/03/2018 19:45

Draylon soon to be By Appointment.

This is for you. Ignore the guards outside, I will stand them down.

I will find you.
