Wearing ballet flats and tights in this weather

Am I stupid? I don’t have any boots that fit and not time to buy - have a corporate job and feel like I’ll look ridiculous!

I got some karrimor walking shoes in sports direct yesterday for 33quid. Waterproof. Good grips. Sturdy. Only trainer height but definitely practical, appropriate footwear. Order some online today and pay next day delivery.

ProperLavs · 01/03/2018 11:51

boots don't have to be expensive. That's no excuse. You're 25 not a baby, buy a pair of shoes for colder weather.

SaucyJack · 01/03/2018 11:55

I got my fur-lined boots for about four quid in the Brantano closing down sale back in July.

I know it's unseasonably cold right now, but it's not that much of a shock that between Nov-March the UK will experience cold weather.

Get some sensible shoes- and add a fleece-lined raincoat in there too while you've got the credit card out. You sound like a teenager.

TheDailyMailLovesTheEUReally · 01/03/2018 11:56

I've managed fine in wellies and thick socks over normal socks this morning. You can get both out of the supermarket for less than £15!

Noodledoodledoo · 01/03/2018 11:56

I wear of boots, leather, good quaility, with decent soles etc, to work every day. I have never paid more than £50 for them.

I wear them pretty much all year round and get through 1 pair a year. They are normally around £40 but often get them in the sale.

I did puzzle at some peoples choice of shoes walking around Tesco car park last night - we had had snow all day - from about 4am so unlikely to have been a bad choice before work.

saoirse31 · 01/03/2018 11:56

But this snow was predicted. Time to get organised op. I'd west trainers but.... If they're old they may have crap grip anyway..

saoirse31 · 01/03/2018 11:57

Wear trainers that is, but if possible stop on way, buy wellies or walking boots...

Talith · 01/03/2018 11:58

Waterproof boots needn't be pricey. Flexible grippy Dunlop wellies are about 12 quid online. They'll last for ever.

MatildaTheCat · 01/03/2018 12:00

WIBU to go out in my flip flops today? I’m 52 and have left my common sense and all my winter clothes somewhere or other ( menopausal so can’t remember where).

Lovemusic33 · 01/03/2018 12:03

Do people really not own wellies or any kind of boots? I guess it depends where you live but I have 2 pairs of wellies, snow boots, uggs and leather boots (I have too many pairs of footwear). We rarely get snow but it gets pretty cold.

ThisLittleKitty · 01/03/2018 12:05

I don't own wellies or boots or trainers. I'm in London so it doesn't really snow often. But like I said i was fine yesterday.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/03/2018 12:09

Surely you do the "heels in handbag" thing all the time OP?

Wear the trainers for the journey then change when you get there (don't forget change of tights)

WonderLime · 01/03/2018 12:09

I don't own wellies or boots or trainers

So what do you own? Just ballet flats and heels? Do you never do any type of physical activity? What would you do if there's more than I inch of snow? I am genuinely baffled by this?

Hillarious · 01/03/2018 12:11

Too large a number of women's boots and shoes are also not suitable in this weather - no better grip than a pair of ballet pumps!

You need a pair of shoes/boots/wellingtons with socks to get to work and then change. I walked to work today in a £10 pair of snow boots and took a change of shoes with me.

I tried to write the shortened version of wellington boots, but auto-correct keeps changing it to "willies".

Plumsofwrath · 01/03/2018 12:13

These sorts of threads make me wonder how on earth some people get through life intact.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/03/2018 12:14

I don't own wellies or boots or trainers

I'm also intrigued by this! No trainers / converse even?

Huggybear16 · 01/03/2018 12:42

What advice are you looking for if you genuinely cannot go to your parents' or the shop and have no other footwear available?

EdithWeston · 01/03/2018 12:52

Even my teen DD wore a pair of rather lurid snow boots (mine, used during skiing hols) to school today, carrying her school shoes in her bag. And she was wearing a coat!

If she loses them, I may have the urge to throttle her.....

I couldn't imagine going out in footwear without a good grip in this - is it even possible to fit yaktrax to ballet flats?

But if you really have no choice, because you didn't own a suitable winter shoe/boot, then OP you need to wear tights, then put a plastic bag on each foot and then put your shoes on. If you can fit another pair of socks over the plastic bags, so much the better, or if you have an old pair (eg old school hockey socks you have no use for) put them on over the shoes.

Branleuse · 01/03/2018 13:02

You can get a pair of snowboots or wellies for under £15 from pretty much any supermarket or budget shoe shop. You can get decent leather boots for around £30/40 from a supermarket that would easily do you a couple of winters.

If you go out in ballet flats in this weather you may as well be barefoot. You will freeze and you will look like a twat.

Lovemusic33 · 01/03/2018 13:18

I’m confused. What do you do in your spare time? Do you not do any activities? Never go walking anywhere muddy?

I don’t own any heals but I do have trainers, boots, wellies and snow boots. I’m always outdoors when I’m not working, always walking or at the gym so I have shoes for almost every occasion. My kids have wellies, trainers and walking boots too.

Cornettoninja · 01/03/2018 13:21

I don't own wellies or boots or trainers

Neither did I till I had dd - never needed them. I did have fairly sturdy ankle boots that saw me through winters though, still a heel on them and work suitable though.

I wore unsuitable footwear like converse for walks and stuff like that but was much more likely to be sat in a beer garden admiring my pretty sandals before kids! Grin

Hillarious · 01/03/2018 13:32

If you go out in ballet flats in this weather you may as well be barefoot. You will freeze and you will look like a twat.

And you'll need to go to a shoe shop anyway, as the flats will be ruined. So, why not treat yourself to some sensible footwear whilst you're there?

LouiseCollins28 · 01/03/2018 13:41

Just been out to get lunch, back now. Have to say I saw plenty of young women out there in ballet flats or other similar footwear, and some with heels on their shoes too. Did you make it to work ok OP?

bluebells1 · 01/03/2018 13:41

This morning while walking the dog, there was a lady who was walking in 6inch heels. I should say 'trying' to walk. She kept slipping and sliding and was getting increasingly frustrated with herself and ended up bursting into tears. I offered to help her and she refused. No idea why people don't own something suitable for this weather.

Noodledoodledoo · 01/03/2018 14:20

This is also one of the reasons schools have such a nightmare as students come in inappropriate footwear. I had break duty on Tuesday in a blizzard, changed my work boots - smart and currently suede as there were £15 in the Next sale!, and I stood outside in my trainers. I saw students in normal school shoes, ballet pumps etc we are pretty relaxed about shoes when its weather like this!
