To say I'm not your fucking mum?

Argh, fed up of seeing people say "you got this mama" or something along those lines on Instagram/FB!

Or answering a post and calling you mama/mumma

I'm not your Mum. You didn't fly from my Fanny flaps. Only my son gets to call me mum/mummy and even he wouldn't use a wanky phrase like 'mama'

AIBU?

I think there's a lot bigger things in this world to be annoyed about than women saying mama to each other. Also pretty rude how you ended your OP.

NooNooHead1981 · 28/02/2018 22:39

I agree, upsideup - ugh, 'fanny flaps'. I really hate the word 'fanny' and for some reason, 'belly' sounds uncouth too. 'Fanny flaps' seems in some way quite a 'common' way of naming a woman's part of her anatomy. Maybe I am easily offended though.

Ha. Each to their own, though, aye?!

Eltonjohnssyrup · 28/02/2018 22:39

People keep calling you Mama? Are you the Queen?

If so YANBU and give Prince Andrew a slap.

upsideup · 28/02/2018 22:41

I thing mama is quite quite coming from your own DC. I may try and get my DS to start saying it when he starts talking

Changed your tune a bit OP, You want a 'wanky' son now do you?

Parrothead · 28/02/2018 22:42

. Parrot your son is probably a child! Children using it to call their actual mums mommas is absolutely acceptable

Did you forget that your OP is still up there for everyone to read? Regardless, someone who says “fanny flaps” is in no position to judge.

DrewBerry95 · 28/02/2018 22:42

ups it isn't a wanky phrase when children use it, I shouldn't of said that

OP posts:
Carouselfish · 28/02/2018 22:46

Ah, when I was among my lovely American biker community I got called 'mama' a lot. Really liked it.
I also got called a burger and fries though.
Both were compliments.

upsideup · 28/02/2018 22:46

DrewBerry95

Dont worry we all already knew that it wasnt 'wanky' for our small children to call us 'mama', it was only you who thought that.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 28/02/2018 22:50

It doesn't bother me online. In hospital for a week after giving birth when several nurses felt the need to call me 'mum' was pretty weird.

How is that weird? Are they suppose to know and remember every single woman that gives birth?

Well, um, yes, for the duration of their stay? It's not as though your name isn't all over everything. Every time anyone gives you any medication, for example, they check your full name and date of birth, because it's important to know which patient is which. And nurses in other wards manage it -- you don't get patients being addressed as "Hopalong" or "Baldy" on the basis that hospital staff can't possibly be expected to know and remember them.

(Also generally IME when you get "mum"ed in hospital it's when there's no actual need to address you as anything. There's nothing intrinsically better about saying "Is that okay, mum?" rather than "Is that okay?")

acquiesce · 28/02/2018 22:53

Urgh the amount of perpetually offended people on here!
OP wasn’t insulting your children! She was saying it’s annoying when grown women call each other mama. It IS annoying. Especially posted with some sort of inspirational quote / meme Hmm
If the word fanny or wank offends you then that’s another level of prude entirely.

TathitiPete · 28/02/2018 22:57

Nothing fucking wrng with 'mama', especially if you're Spanish (or Italian like mamahanji). You'd probably consider 'mami' wanky too. Tough shit, it's Catalan.

StellaWouldYouTakeMeHome · 28/02/2018 22:58

My daughters’ call me Mumma, that’s what they picked. I don’t mind other Mumma’s saying that to each other since it’s always meant supportively and each to their own I suppose.

I did cringe at reading ‘fanny flaps’ - gross turn of phrase 🤢

DrewBerry95 · 28/02/2018 23:10

I know. And mama is said by natives of my mother's side country too Smile

Is definitely wanky though when Sarah from Essex says it Wink

Because it's one of those cringy, annoyingly twee phrases used!

OP posts:
honeyroar · 28/02/2018 23:14

Ive only ever heard it in the Spice Girls song or when I lived in Italy.

Cowsopinion · 28/02/2018 23:18

I find it more prevalent in mummy blogs tbh.

I think it's quite obvious that OP meant it as when adults say it to one another. Like you're one strong Mama or you go Mama. Or Mama knows best.

Or I just follow complete shit on FB and need to re-evaluate my preferences. Grin

HateIsNotGood · 28/02/2018 23:26

It's just like those Giant Eyebrow People - have you done a correlation between type of eyebrow and use of this new pronoun?

Or maybe it's a social media thing.

I don't know - but it's making me feel a bit dizzy thinking about it so I'm off to bed. I'm sure there are many other experts in many other 'fields' that can explain this (rather dizzifying) phenomena better than I.

IfYouDontImagineNothingHappens · 28/02/2018 23:31

Women supporting each other and encouraging each other through the bloody difficult time that is motherhood.

Burn the Witches

Down with this sort of thing

Hmm
truetoyourself · 28/02/2018 23:33

I get you op. I have seen it too and it is mildly irritating (also, "mama bear")

Big difference between kids using it to their actual mum, and grown adults using it. It comes a toss a bit insincere - like an affectation iyswim. It's cringy.

Can't believe how much shit you're getting though! Should have put lighthearted

truetoyourself · 28/02/2018 23:34

It's like how some people find "hun" cringy. Nothing personal against bees.

thecatsarecrazy · 28/02/2018 23:36

When my ds was in hospital for a month i got pissed off with being called mum by the nurse's. I posted at the time and was told I was bu and obviously didn't have anything else to worry about. Hmm

My daughters teacher calls me mum.. I hate it.

Lobsterface · 28/02/2018 23:43

Nurses don’t call any other patient by the reason they’re in for, so I don’t see why it’s acceptable with mums.

Mama from a child, to a child, fine. Mama on your instagram/Twitter/Facebook/CV, no. Just no.

SuperPug · 28/02/2018 23:45

Yes OP, I know exactly what you mean re: you got this mama turn of phrase.
SIL is a fan. Hmm

Pillow spam is another bugbear of mine!
